    Organizational Leadership Styles in Startups in Nepal

    This study investigates the organizational leadership styles typical of startups in Nepal, a nation renowned for its developing entrepreneurial ecosystem. The study employs a mixed-method approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques, with an emphasis on comprehending the leadership behaviors that promote success and growth in these early businesses. In-depth interviews with company founders, executives, and important stakeholders are conducted as part of the qualitative aspect in order to learn more about their managerial styles, decision-making procedures, and leadership styles. Additionally, observations and case studies of chosen startups provide actual instances of good leadership techniques and how they affect the growth of the firm. A structured questionnaire is given to a different sample of startup employees to gather their impressions of leadership styles inside their individual firms. This complements the qualitative findings. This quantitative information aids in finding patterns, connections, and possible areas for development. This study provides important insights for business owners, investors, and policymakers looking to support a creative and robust startup ecosystem by acquiring a thorough understanding of leadership style in Nepalese companies. The results may also provide a basis for future studies on leadership in developing economies and offer helpful advice for startups as they confront possibilities and obstacles on their way to long-term growth and success.&nbsp

    Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent with the estimates of the numbers of deaths in the GBD. The present iteration of the GBD, GBD 2017, improves on previous assessments and provides timely estimates of the mortality experience of populations globally. METHODS: The GBD uses all available data to produce estimates of mortality rates between 1950 and 2017 for 23 age groups, both sexes, and 918 locations, including 195 countries and territories and subnational locations for 16 countries. Data used include vital registration systems, sample registration systems, household surveys (complete birth histories, summary birth histories, sibling histories), censuses (summary birth histories, household deaths), and Demographic Surveillance Sites. In total, this analysis used 8259 data sources. Estimates of the probability of death between birth and the age of 5 years and between ages 15 and 60 years are generated and then input into a model life table system to produce complete life tables for all locations and years. Fatal discontinuities and mortality due to HIV/AIDS are analysed separately and then incorporated into the estimation. We analyse the relationship between age-specific mortality and development status using the Socio-demographic Index, a composite measure based on fertility under the age of 25 years, education, and income. There are four main methodological improvements in GBD 2017 compared with GBD 2016: 622 additional data sources have been incorporated; new estimates of population, generated by the GBD study, are used; statistical methods used in different components of the analysis have been further standardised and improved; and the analysis has been extended backwards in time by two decades to start in 1950. FINDINGS: Globally, 18·7% (95% uncertainty interval 18·4–19·0) of deaths were registered in 1950 and that proportion has been steadily increasing since, with 58·8% (58·2–59·3) of all deaths being registered in 2015. At the global level, between 1950 and 2017, life expectancy increased from 48·1 years (46·5–49·6) to 70·5 years (70·1–70·8) for men and from 52·9 years (51·7–54·0) to 75·6 years (75·3–75·9) for women. Despite this overall progress, there remains substantial variation in life expectancy at birth in 2017, which ranges from 49·1 years (46·5–51·7) for men in the Central African Republic to 87·6 years (86·9–88·1) among women in Singapore. The greatest progress across age groups was for children younger than 5 years; under-5 mortality dropped from 216·0 deaths (196·3–238·1) per 1000 livebirths in 1950 to 38·9 deaths (35·6–42·83) per 1000 livebirths in 2017, with huge reductions across countries. Nevertheless, there were still 5·4 million (5·2–5·6) deaths among children younger than 5 years in the world in 2017. Progress has been less pronounced and more variable for adults, especially for adult males, who had stagnant or increasing mortality rates in several countries. The gap between male and female life expectancy between 1950 and 2017, while relatively stable at the global level, shows distinctive patterns across super-regions and has consistently been the largest in central Europe, eastern Europe, and central Asia, and smallest in south Asia. Performance was also variable across countries and time in observed mortality rates compared with those expected on the basis of development. INTERPRETATION: This analysis of age-sex-specific mortality shows that there are remarkably complex patterns in population mortality across countries. The findings of this study highlight global successes, such as the large decline in under-5 mortality, which reflects significant local, national, and global commitment and investment over several decades. However, they also bring attention to mortality patterns that are a cause for concern, particularly among adult men and, to a lesser extent, women, whose mortality rates have stagnated in many countries over the time period of this study, and in some cases are increasing

    Not AvailableAn experiment was conducted to evaluate the comparative performance of 10 tomato cultivars in the western undulating zone of Odisha during 2010–11 and 2011–12. The tallest plant was manifested by BT-106 (78.6 cm) followed by Utkal Pragyan (73.6 cm) and Swarna Lalima (69.5 cm) while shortest plant height (39.6 cm) was recorded in Utkal Urvashi. Maximum number of branches was found in BT-106 (10.8) followed by Utkal Pragyan (9.4) and minimum in Utkal Urvashi (5.7). The period required between transplanting and harvesting of first mature fruit varied between 73 to 90 days. The diameter of the fruit ranged between 3.3 cm in Utkal Pallavi to 4.9 cm in Utkal Raja. Similarly the length of fruit was highest in Utkal Urvashi (4.8 cm) and lowest in BT-106 (3.1 cm). Swarna Lalima produced the highest individual fruit weight (57.0 g) followed by Utkal Urvashi (50 g) and BT-10 (41.7 g) while lowest mean fruit weight was recorded in Utkal Dipti (23.3 g). The variety BT-106 recorded the highest fruit yield (2.2 kg/plant) followed by Utkal Pragyan (2.1 kg/plant) while minimum fruit yield of 1.5 kg/plant was notice in variety Utkal Urvashi (BT-12). Likewise the per hectare yield was highest in BT-106 (49.7 ton/ha) followed by Utkal Pragyan (45.8 ton/ha), Swarna Lalima (42 ton/ha) and Utkal Raja (40.4 ton/ha).     Transcriptional activation of tyrosinase gene by human placental sphingolipid

    The sphingolipids, a class of complex bioactive lipids, are involved in diverse cellular functions such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis as well as growth inhibition. Recently sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC), sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), and C2-ceramide (C2-Cer), sphingolipid containing acetic acid are emerging as melanogenic regulators. A bioactive sphingolipid (PSL) was isolated from hydroalcoholic extract of fresh term human placenta and it induced melanogenesis in an in vitro culture of mouse melanoma B16F10 cells. Tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme for melanogenesis, is required to be upregulated for the increased melanin production. The expression of tyrosinase, both at protein as well as mRNA level, was higher in the PSL treated B16F10 cells as evidenced by Western blot and RT-PCR analysis. Actinomycin D and cycloheximide, inhibitors of transcription and translation, respectively, inhibited PSL-induced tyrosinase activity and its protein expression showing decrease in melanogenesis, correspondingly. The activity of GFP coupled tyrosinase promoter was upregulated in transfected B16F10 cells after treating with PSL as determined by fluorescence microscopy, fluorometric analysis, and Western blot. These results, thus, suggested that PSL upregulated tyrosinase gene expression at transcription level through promoter activation to show increased melanogenesis. Therefore, PSL as an inducer of melanogenesis might account for the recovery of pigment in depigmentation disorder

    Geochemistry of Sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous Sillakkudi Formation, Cauvery Basin, Southern India: Implication for Provenance

    Major, trace and rare earth elements (REE) composition of sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous Sillakkudi Formation, Ariyalur Group, Cauvery Basin were studied to decipher their weathering and provenance history. Texturally, these sandstones are immature, poorly sorted and grain supported. Abundance of feldspars especially, plagioclase indicates rapid deposition of sediments from a nearby source rocks. Using the geochemical classification diagram the Sillakkudi sandstones are classified as fe-sand, quartz arenite, litharenite, sub-litharenite, sub-arkose, arkose, and wacke types,which is also supported by the petrography study. The transition trace elements like Co, Ni, and V are higher in theSillakkudi sandstones than upper continental crust (UCC) values. However, the Sillakkudi sandstones are lower in Cr (mean ~21) content than average UCC value (~ 35). The poor correlation between Cr and Ni (r = 0.08, number of samples n = 20) imply that these sandstones were derived from felsic source rocks. Similarly, the Eu/Eu* (0.35-1.73), La/Sc (1.93-9.36), Th/Sc (0.41-6.57), Th/Co (0.14-5.01), Th/Cr (0.23-2.94), and Cr/Th (0.34-4.28) ratios support a felsic source for the Sillakkudi sandstones.The significant enrichment of Zr, Hf, and Th in fe-sand, sub-arkose and litharenite could be related to the presence of heavy minerals, especially zircon. However, the zircon geochemistry did not affectthe REE distribution and its patterns in the Sillakkudi sandstones. The Chondrite normalized REE patterns of Sillakkudi sandstones are characterized by relatively flat HREE (Gd/YbCN = ~ 0.73-2.41; subscript CN refers to chondrite normalized value), enriched LREE (La/SmCN = ~ 3.39-5.82) and negative Eu anomaly (mean value Eu/Eu* = 0.80). The Gd/YbCN ratios (~0.73-2.50) are less than 2.5, which suggest that these Sillakkudi sandstones were derived from the less HREE depleted source rocks. The comparison of REE patterns and its Eu anomalies to the source rocks reveals that the Sillakkudi sandstones received a major contribution of sediments from Dharwar craton
