    Managing Discovery and Linking Services

    Get PDF
There is a growing trend towards a consolidation of services for Electronic Resource Management (ERM), A-Z journal listings, full text link resolving and discovery services under a single service provider. In many cases, the adoption of a discovery service from a provider that is not the same as the libraries\u27 existing link resolver service means managing multiple knowledgebases. In this session, 3 libraries will provide an overview of their experience and strategies for maintaining separate link resolving and discovery services in lieu of adopting a full suite of services from a single service provider. Each speaker will provide a case study on the advantages and/or challenges of managing their chosen discovery service, EBSCO\u27s EDS, Ex Libris\u27 Primo and ProQuest\u27s Summon, in conjunction with the CUFTS/GODOT open source knowledgebase/link resolver

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have transformed with the advent of the Internet and the diffusion of cellular-based communications. Previous research has examined the effects of horizontal ICT on collective violence, but the effects on non-violent expressions are not well understood. Using social conflict data from Africa and Latin America between 1990 and 2011, this study employs negative binomial regression models to explore the distinct effects of the spread of social media on peaceful protests within democratic, anocratic, and autocratic regimes. Multiple regression models find strong statistical evidence in support of a positive relationship between social media and peaceful protest in anocratic regimes. Autocratic and anocratic states will thus increasingly find themselves in a social media challenge--repress horizontal ICT or embrace it and its effects--as their populations seek democratization.http://archive.org/details/peacefulprotestp1094549431Major, United States ArmyMajor, United States ArmyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Framing the Post-2020 Afghan Environment: Thoughts and Recommendations

    Get PDF
This research aims to augment the reader’s strategic appreciation for the post-2020 environment in Afghanistan. As such, the authors consider this a “thought piece” versus a policy prescriptive decision briefing or white paper. The near-term goal is to inform the NATO Special Operations Component Command – Afghanistan/Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan (NSOCC-A/SOJTF-A) Commander and his staff on crucial variables that may prove consequential in the forthcoming development of a campaign design for the future utilization of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in Afghanistan, while also providing a collection of ‘creative options’ that could be injected into future SOF campaign plans in order to influence the aforementioned variables. For this analysis, the authors consciously present a holistic look at Afghanistan, accounting for variables and circumstances beyond SOJTF-A’s authorities or sphere of influence. The expanded scope was purposefully chosen to present a comprehensive understanding of the environment in which SOJTF-A leadership employs the SOF enterprise.Commander, NSOCC-A/SOJTF-ACommander, NSOCC-A/SOJTF-
