    Produção orgùnica de rabanete em plantio direto sobre cobertura morta e viva.

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso de plantas espontùneas e cobertura viva de amendoim forrageiro(Arachis pintoi), associado à aplicação de composto orgùnico na produção orgùnica do rabanete em plantio direto. O experimento foi instalado na Universidade Federal do Acre, em Rio Branco-AC, de 15/06 a 14/07/2007. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas 4x3, em quatro repetiçÔes. As parcelas corresponderam ao sistema de plantio direto com cobertura viva de amendoim forrageiro, cobertura viva de planta espontùnea, cobertura morta de planta espontùnea e sistema de plantio em canteiro com solo descoberto. As subparcelas foram compostas pelas doses de composto orgùnico de 5, 10 e 15 t ha-1 (base seca). O plantio direto na palha de plantas espontùneas teve desempenho semelhante ao preparo convencional do solo, ambos superiores ao plantio sobre as coberturas vivas. A produtividade do rabanete cv. Cometo, não foi afetada pelas doses crescentes de composto orgùnico, podendo aplicar-se apenas 5 t ha-1, enquanto em preparo convencional do solo, o aumento da produtividade ultrapassa o plantio direto na palha apenas na dose maior de composto (15 t ha-1)

    CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: C-reactive protein (CRP) is commonly used as a marker for inflammatory states and for early identification of infection. This study aimed to investigate CRP as a marker for infection in patients with postoperative septic shock. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective, single-center study, developed in a surgical intensive care unit at Hospital das ClĂ­nicas, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de SĂŁo Paulo. METHODS: This study evaluated 54 patients in the postoperative period, of whom 29 had septic shock (SS group) and 25 had systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS group). All of the patients were monitored over a seven-day period using the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and daily CRP and lactate measurements. RESULTS: The daily CRP measurements did not differ between the groups. There was no correlation between CRP and lactate levels and the SOFA score in the groups. We observed that the plasma CRP concentrations were high in almost all of the patients. The patients presented an inflammatory state postoperatively in response to surgical aggression. This could explain the elevated CRP measurements, regardless of whether the patient was infected or not. CONCLUSIONS: This study did not show any correlation between CRP and infection among patients with SIRS and septic shock during the early postoperative period.CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: A proteĂ­na C reativa (PCR) Ă© muito usada como marcador de estados inflamatĂłrios e na identificação precoce de infecção. Este estudo teve como proposta investigar a PCR como marcadora de infecção em pacientes em choque sĂ©ptico no perĂ­odo pĂłs-operatĂłrio. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Estudo prospectivo, monocĂȘntrico, desenvolvido numa unidade de terapia intensiva pĂłs-operatĂłria do Hospital das ClĂ­nicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de SĂŁo Paulo. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 54 pacientes no pĂłs-operatĂłrio, sendo 29 deles com choque sĂ©ptico (grupo SS) e 25 com sĂ­ndrome da resposta inflamatĂłria sistĂȘmica (grupo SI). Todos os pacientes foram acompanhados durante sete dias pelo escore SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) e com dosagens diĂĄrias de PCR e lactato. RESULTADOS: As dosagens de PCR nĂŁo diferiram entre os grupos. NĂŁo foi observada correlação entre dosagem de PCR e lactato ou escore SOFA nos grupos estudados. Observamos que as concentraçÔes plasmĂĄticas de PCR estavam elevadas em quase todos os pacientes avaliados. Os pacientes no pĂłs-operatĂłrio apresentam estado inflamatĂłrio em resposta Ă  agressĂŁo cirĂșrgica, sendo este fato capaz de explicar as dosagens de PCR elevadas, independentemente de o paciente estar ou nĂŁo infectado. CONCLUSÕES: Este estudo nĂŁo evidenciou correlação entre PCR e infecção nos pacientes com sĂ­ndrome da resposta inflamatĂłria sistĂȘmica e choque sĂ©ptico no perĂ­odo pĂłs-operatĂłrio precoce

    Avaliação da resistĂȘncia ao cisalhamento da uniĂŁo entre duas ligas a base de CoCr e uma cerĂąmica

    INTRODUCTION: Based on the importance of the integrity of the metal/ceramic interface, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the metal-ceramic union of two Co-Cr alloys (Wirobond C, Bego; Remanium 2000, Dentaurum) combined with Omega 900 ceramic (Vita Zahnfabrik). MATERIAL and METHOD: Eleven cylindrical matrixes were made for each alloy, and the metallic portion was obtained with the lost wax casting technique with standardized waxing of 4mm of height and of 4mm of diameter. The ceramic was applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations with the aid of a teflon matrix that allowed its dimension to be standardized in the same size as the metallic portion. The specimens were submitted to the shear bond test in an universal testing machine (EMIC), with the aid of a device developed for such intention, and constant speed of 0.5mm/min. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS: The mean resistance was 48.387MPa for Wirobond C alloy, with standard deviation of 17.718, and 55.956MPa for Remanium 2000, with standard deviation of 17.198. No statistically significant difference was observed between the shear strength of the two metal-ceramic alloys. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMOINTRODUÇÃO: Baseados na importĂąncia da integridade da interface metal-cerĂąmica, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a resistĂȘncia ao cisalhamento da uniĂŁo metal-cerĂąmica de duas ligas de Co-Cr (Wirobond C, Bego; Remanium 2000, Dentaurum) combinadas com a cerĂąmica Omega 900 (Vita Zahnfabrik). MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram confeccionados 11 corpos-de-prova cilĂ­ndricos para cada liga utilizada, sendo que a porção metĂĄlica foi obtida por fundição pela tĂ©cnica da cera perdida, atravĂ©s de enceramentos padronizados com 4mm de altura por 4mm de diĂąmetro. A aplicação da cerĂąmica foi realizada segundo recomendaçÔes do fabricante, com auxĂ­lio de uma matriz de teflon que permitia sua padronização com as mesmas dimensĂ”es da porção metĂĄlica. Os corpos-de-prova foram submetidos ao ensaio de resistĂȘncia ao cisalhamento em mĂĄquina de ensaios universal (EMIC), com auxĂ­lio de dispositivo desenvolvido para tal propĂłsito, sob velocidade constante de 0,5mm/ min. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: As mĂ©dias de resistĂȘncia obtidas foram 48,387 MPa para a liga Wirobond C, com desvio padrĂŁo de 17,718, e 55,956 MPa para a Remanium 2000, com desvio padrĂŁo de 17,198.     Behavior therapy for pediatric trichotillomania: Exploring the effects of age on treatment outcome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A randomized controlled trial examining the efficacy of behavior therapy for pediatric trichotillomania was recently completed with 24 participants ranging in age from 7 - 17. The broad age range raised a question about whether young children, older children, and adolescents would respond similarly to intervention. In particular, it is unclear whether the younger children have the cognitive capacity to understand concepts like "urges" and whether they are able to introspect enough to be able to benefit from awareness training, which is a key aspect of behavior therapy for trichotillomania.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Participants were randomly assigned to receive either behavior therapy (N = 12) or minimal attention control (N = 12), which was included to control for repeated assessments and the passage of time. Primary outcome measures were the independent evaluator-rated NIMH-Trichotillomania Severity Scale, a semi-structured interview often used in trichotillomania treatment trials, and a post-treatment clinical global impression improvement rating (CGI-I).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The correlation between age and change in symptom severity for all patients treated in the trial was small and not statistically significant. A 2 (group: behavioral therapy, minimal attention control) × 2 (time: week 0, 8) × 2 (children < 9 yrs., children > 10) ANOVA with independent evaluator-rated symptom severity scores as the continuous dependent variable also detected no main effects for age or for any interactions involving age. In light of the small sample size, the mean symptom severity scores at weeks 0 and 8 for younger and older patients randomized to behavioral therapy were also plotted. Visual inspection of these data indicated that although the groups appeared to have started at similar levels of severity for children ≀ 9 vs. children ≄ 10; the week 8 data show that the three younger children did at least as well as if not slightly better than the nine older children and adolescents.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Behavior therapy for pediatric trichotillomania appears to be efficacious even in young children.     Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in √sNN=5.02  TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are measured in √sNN=5.02  TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1  Όb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Δη|<5) “near-side” (Δϕ∌0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range “away-side” (Δϕ∌π) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Δη and Δϕ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant Δϕ correlation is approximately symmetric about π/2, and is consistent with a dominant cos⁥2Δϕ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT

    Maternal Undernutrition Significantly Impacts Ovarian Follicle Number and Increases Ovarian Oxidative Stress in Adult Rat Offspring

    BACKGROUND: We have shown recently that maternal undernutrition (UN) advanced female pubertal onset in a manner that is dependent upon the timing of UN. The long-term consequence of this accelerated puberty on ovarian function is unknown. Recent findings suggest that oxidative stress may be one mechanism whereby early life events impact on later physiological functioning. Therefore, using an established rodent model of maternal UN at critical windows of development, we examined maternal UN-induced changes in offspring ovarian function and determined whether these changes were underpinned by ovarian oxidative stress. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our study is the first to show that maternal UN significantly reduced primordial and secondary follicle number in offspring in a manner that was dependent upon the timing of maternal UN. Specifically, a reduction in these early stage follicles was observed in offspring born to mothers undernourished throughout both pregnancy and lactation. Additionally, antral follicle number was reduced in offspring born to all mothers that were UN regardless of whether the period of UN was restricted to pregnancy or lactation or both. These reductions were associated with decreased mRNA levels of genes critical for follicle maturation and ovulation. Increased ovarian protein carbonyls were observed in offspring born to mothers UN during pregnancy and/or lactation and this was associated with peroxiredoxin 3 hyperoxidation and reduced mRNA levels; suggesting compromised antioxidant defence. This was not observed in offspring of mothers UN during lactation alone. CONCLUSIONS: We propose that maternal UN, particularly at a time-point that includes pregnancy, results in reduced offspring ovarian follicle numbers and mRNA levels of regulatory genes and may be mediated by increased ovarian oxidative stress coupled with a decreased ability to repair the resultant oxidative damage. Together these data are suggestive of maternal UN potentially contributing to premature ovarian ageing in offspring
