GASKAP -- The Galactic ASKAP Survey

    Get PDF
A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (HI) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of HI emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b|< 10deg) at all declinations south of delta = +40deg, spanning longitudes 167deg through 360deg to 79deg at b=0deg, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13,020 square degrees. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically sigma_T ~ 1 K at resolution 30arcsec and 1 km/s. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.Comment: 45 pages, 8 figures, Pub. Search for W~1Z~2\widetilde{W}_1\widetilde{Z}_2 Production via Trilepton Final States in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV

We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino, W~1\widetilde{W}_1, and next-to-lightest neutralino, Z~2\widetilde{Z}_2, of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at \mbox{s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV} using the \D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5±0.7\pm 0.7 \ipb were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for W~1Z~2\widetilde{W}_1\widetilde{Z}_2 pair production was found. Limits on σ(W~1Z~2)\sigma(\widetilde{W}_1\widetilde{Z}_2)Br(W~1lνZ~1)(\widetilde{W}_1\to l\nu\widetilde{Z}_1)Br(Z~2llˉZ~1)(\widetilde{Z}_2\to l\bar{l}\widetilde{Z}_1) are presented.Comment: 17 pages (13 + 1 page table + 3 pages figures). 3 PostScript figures will follow in a UUEncoded, gzip'd, tar file. Second Generation Leptoquark Search in p\bar{p} Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks with the D\O\ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} collider at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. This search is based on 12.7 pb1^{-1} of data. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay into a muon and quark with branching ratio β\beta or to neutrino and quark with branching ratio (1β)(1-\beta). We obtain cross section times branching ratio limits as a function of leptoquark mass and set a lower limit on the leptoquark mass of 111 GeV/c2^{2} for β=1\beta = 1 and 89 GeV/c2^{2} for β=0.5\beta = 0.5 at the 95%\ confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, FERMILAB-PUB-95/185-

Jet Production via Strongly-Interacting Color-Singlet Exchange in ppˉp\bar{p} Collisions

A study of the particle multiplicity between jets with large rapidity separation has been performed using the D{\O}detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} Collider operating at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. A significant excess of low-multiplicity events is observed above the expectation for color-exchange processes. The measured fractional excess is 1.07±0.10(stat)0.13+0.25(syst)1.07 \pm 0.10({\rm stat})^{+ 0.25}_{- 0.13}({\rm syst})%, which is consistent with a strongly-interacting color-singlet (colorless) exchange process and cannot be explained by electroweak exchange alone. A lower limit of 0.80% (95% C.L.) is obtained on the fraction of dijet events with color-singlet exchange, independent of the rapidity gap survival probability.Comment: 15 pages (REVTeX), 3 PS figs (uuencoded/tar compressed, epsf.sty) Complete postscript available at http://d0sgi0.fnal.gov/d0pubs/journals.html Submitted to Physical Review Letter

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007

    Get PDF
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of merger and core-collapse events.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, science summary page at http://www.ligo.org/science/Publication-S5LV_ANTARES/index.php. This article aims to evaluate the emergence and evolution of the Costa Rican real estate market in order to unravel the context of the strong bond with the land and hence the slow acceptance of new residential vertical trends. The methodology consists of annual fieldworks between 2011 and 2017, a revision of some local antique urban photographs and a bibliographical review of Costa Rican, Brazilian and international Marxist authors, with the purpose of formulating a theoretical discussion to show how changes in the modes of production and the local economy strengthened the relationship between people and their land. A broad time frame is analyzed, from the colonial period until nowadays, in order to examine, how across the course of the evolution of the real estate market, the different forms of housing have adapted to preserve the strong attachment that the population has had for their land. Afterward, the issue of the recent emergence of luxury vertical buildings is addressed and a semantic analysis is done to examine the population´s response to the new residential proposal without access to open space. It is concluded the strong attachment to the land may be one of the main reasons for the slow acceptance of new vertical developments in Costa Rica, even though there might exist other factors.Universidad de Costa Rica/[]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidade Federal de Santa Catarina/[]/UFSC/BrasilUCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Sociales::Facultad de Ciencias Sociales::Escuela de Geografí

Relationship Between Osteonecrosis of the Jaw and Bisphosphonate Treatment

    Get PDF
Bisphosphonate treatment and its aetiopathogenic association with aseptic osteonecrosis of the jaw is one of the more prominent public health issues today. The aim of this review is to see into the mechanisms of bisphosphonate effects on bones described in literature (anti-osteoclastic activity, cytotoxicity, antiangiogenesis, genetic factors, and imbalance between osteoclasts and osteoblasts). Bisphosphonate treatment is the dominant cause of jaw necrosis. Epidemiological data show an exclusive incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients who took one or a combination of nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates. Risk factors vary by the bisphosphonate potency (particularly risky are the highly potent pamidronate and zoledronate, which are given intravenously), dosage, duration of treatment, and the illness. Jaw necrosis is most common in oncology patients, and only 5 % in patients with osteoporosis. From a dental-medical point of view, a good oral health is important because osteonecrosis often appears after a periodontal or oral surgical procedure
