Heat Transfer in Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard Convection below the Ultimate Regime
A Rayleigh-B\'enard cell has been designed to explore the Prandtl (Pr)
dependence of turbulent convection in the cross-over range and for
the full range of soft and hard turbulences, up to Rayleigh number . The set-up benefits from the favourable characteristics of cryogenic
helium-4 in fluid mechanics, in-situ fluid property measurements, and special
care on thermometry and calorimetric instrumentation. The cell is cylindrical
with . The effective heat transfer has been
measured with unprecedented accuracy for cryogenic turbulent convection
experiments in this range of Rayleigh numbers. Spin-off of this study include
improved fits of helium thermodynamics and viscosity properties. Three main
results were found. First the dependence exhibits a bimodality of the
flow with difference in for given and . Second, a
systematic study of the side-wall influence reveals a measurable effect on the
heat transfer. Third, the dependence is very small or null : the
absolute value of the average logarithmic slope is smaller
than 0.03 in our range of , which allows to disciminate between
contradictory experiments [Ashkenazi \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev.Lett. 83:3641

The "Universidad del Monte" project is a project carried out jointly with the Wichí Community of Misión Chaqueña and recent graduated architects trained in the UNC FAUDI. It aims to create a meeting space and aboriginal formation self managed by the Wichí Community in "The Impenetrable" to recover ancestral wisdom, culture, complementing traditional education, re-interpreting the historical construction forms of the site.Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanism
The density dependence of the transition temperature in a homogenous Bose flui
Transition temperature data obtained as a function of particle density in the
He-Vycor system are compared with recent theoretical calculations for 3D
Bose condensed systems. In the low density dilute Bose gas regime we find, in
agreement with theory, a positive shift in the transition temperature of the
form . At higher densities a maximum is
found in the ratio of for a value of the interaction parameter,
na, that is in agreement with path-integral Monte Carlo calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Kondo engineering : from single Kondo impurity to the Kondo lattice
In the first step, experiments on a single cerium or ytterbium Kondo impurity
reveal the importance of the Kondo temperature by comparison to other type of
couplings like the hyperfine interaction, the crystal field and the intersite
coupling. The extension to a lattice is discussed. Emphasis is given on the
fact that the occupation number of the trivalent configuration may be the
implicit key variable even for the Kondo lattice. Three phase
diagrams are discussed: CeRuSi, CeRhIn and SmS

This thesis deals with turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection for Rayleigh numbers (Ra) up to 10^14, thanks to the use of cryogenic helium. We focused on the convection regime appearing at Ra 10^12. This regime has been observed and interpreted 10 years ago in Grenoble, as the transition to the R. Kraichnan Ultimate Regime of convection (1962). Two signatures of this regime had been reported : an increase of the Nusselt number (Nu) and a qualitative change of the temperature fluctuations in the bulk of the cell. This last signature has been questionned by invoking a size effect of the sensors. First, we confirm the transition previously observed, with local temperature measurements, using a thermometer ten times smaller. This work is complemented with a study of the probe size effect on the temperature measurement. Thermometers, whose size ranges from 17 microns to 2 mm, were designed for this purpose. Then we indirectly observe an instability of the thermal boundary layer, which is in agreement with predictions on the Ultimate Regime. This observation is based on temperature fluctuations measurements of the bottom plate of the cell. This transition and the one observed on the heat transfer occur at the same Ra. Finally, we exclude the hypothesis that the transition observed on the heat transfer is due to a transition of the large scale circulation in the cell, thanks to the characterization of this circulation before and after the transition.GRENOBLE1-BU Sciences (384212103) / SudocSudocFranceF
H↓ on He : sticking and 2d-superfluidity
The sticking coefficient, which governs the sticking time τs, is discussed for high surface-coverage conditions. We point out that τ s must remain large compared to a characteristic vortex diffusion time, if the system is to display 2d-superfluidity.
