dissertationWe consider a random walk on d+1 in a cone-mixing space-time random environment. We give a condition for a law of large numbers to hold. Furthermore, assuming an exponentially decreasing spatial-mixing condition, as well as an exponentially decreasing cone-mixing condition, an almost-sure quenched functional central limit theorem is proved by using a martingale approach

Women and Tenure: Closing the Gap

    Get PDF
Women in 2009 are earning advanced degrees in record numbers, yet they are shying away from careers in higher education. The demands of motherhood, coupled with a lack of family friendly policies in the academic workplace make life in the academy less desirable for a new generation of female scholars. The purpose of this article is to explore the reasons behind the low numbers of ten- ured female faculty in American higher education and to propose strategies for reversing this trend. Specific suggestions for improving the collegiate work en- vironment for women at the individual, department, and institutional levels are provided

“They hurt me Pauley:” Applying Queer Performance Theory within L.B. Hamilton’s Play \u3cem\u3eA Midnight Clear\u3c/em\u3e to Understand Gendered Violence and Prejudice Against Feminine MSM

This essay uses the theoretical lens of queer performance theory to analyze L.B. Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). I first contextualize existing literature about sexual assault and the limited research about feminine men regarding sexual violence and assault. Then, I examine the components of queer performance theory, positing a metaphorical equation of combining both queer theory and performance theory to further understand the roots of queer performance theory. In this section, I also suggest the importance of representation and identity within a dramaturgical and theatrical-based lens from both an academic and personalized standpoint. Next, I provide an in-depth textual analysis of A Midnight Clear, using the lens of queer performance theory. In doing so, I specifically analyze the complex portrayals of sexual identity and gender performativity that both characters transition to and from within the play. This play challenges the social normativity of rape myths and assaults against feminine MSM and conversations that can occur regarding sexual assault experiences. My analysis includes mapping the changing gender performativity from masculinity to femininity and varied portrayals of sexual identities of both main characters within this piece, Luke and Paul. Each character creates portrayals that challenge the common hegemonic heterosexist society of both sexual identities and gender performance. The characters enact gender portrayals that range from masculine to that of a nurturing mother. Additionally, both characters display complex sexual identities that are not monolithic representations of sexuality but instead portrayals of sexual identity as fluid and dependent upon one’s partner. Finally, I draw implications from the analysis of Hamilton’s play in comparing the stereotypes of feminine performativity regarding the prejudice feminine MSM endure. I also consider limitations of this analysis regarding existing academic and scholarly research on violence specifically targeted towards feminine MSM. I conclude with future research directions concerning the importance of additional research of sexual assault, violence, and prejudice for feminine MSM

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to examine the contributions of Estelle Brodman, PhD, to the early application of computing technologies in health sciences libraries. METHODS: A review of the literature, oral histories, and materials contained in the archives of the Bernard Becker Medical Library at the Washington University School of Medicine was conducted. RESULTS: While the early computing technologies were not well suited to library applications, their exciting potential was recognized by visionaries like Dr. Brodman. The effective use of these technologies was made possible by creative and innovative projects and programs. The impact of these early efforts continues to resonate through library services and operations. CONCLUSIONS: Computing technologies have transformed libraries. Dr. Brodman's leadership in the early development and application of these technologies provided significant benefits to the health sciences library community

AutoCure: Automated Tabular Data Curation Technique for ML Pipelines

Machine learning algorithms have become increasingly prevalent in multiple domains, such as autonomous driving, healthcare, and finance. In such domains, data preparation remains a significant challenge in developing accurate models, requiring significant expertise and time investment to search the huge search space of well-suited data curation and transformation tools. To address this challenge, we present AutoCure, a novel and configuration-free data curation pipeline that improves the quality of tabular data. Unlike traditional data curation methods, AutoCure synthetically enhances the density of the clean data fraction through an adaptive ensemble-based error detection method and a data augmentation module. In practice, AutoCure can be integrated with open source tools, e.g., Auto-sklearn, H2O, and TPOT, to promote the democratization of machine learning. As a proof of concept, we provide a comparative evaluation of AutoCure against 28 combinations of traditional data curation tools, demonstrating superior performance and predictive accuracy without user intervention. Our evaluation shows that AutoCure is an effective approach to automating data preparation and improving the accuracy of machine learning models

The raw images (available on request) have been captured using a Canon 8-15mm fisheye lens and therefore they have a wide field of view, which results in a dark image boundary as the lights did not illuminate the outer sectors well. The images in this dataset have then been undistorted to virtual images that an ideal perspective camera with only 90 degrees horizontal field of view would have seen from the same position. To achieve this, the color of each pixel in the ideal image is obtained by - computing the ray in space associated with this virtual pixel (using rectilinear un-projection) - projecting this ray into the original fisheye image (using equidistant projection), yielding a sub-pixel position - interpolating the colors of the neighboring pixels Technically, the undistortion has been performed using the tool https://svn.geomar.de/dsm-general/trunk/src/BIAS/Tools/biasproject.cpp (at revision 418, and earlier, compatible revisions). Manual image annotation is available here: https://annotate.geomar.de/volumes/24
