Effective Potential for Uniform Magnetic Fields through Pauli Interaction
We have calculated the explicit form of the real and imaginary parts of the
effective potential for uniform magnetic fields which interact with spin-1/2
fermions through the Pauli interaction. It is found that the non-vanishing
imaginary part develops for a magnetic field stronger than a critical field,
whose strength is the ratio of the fermion mass to its magnetic moment. This
implies the instability of the uniform magnetic field beyond the critical field
strength to produce fermion pairs with the production rate density
in the
presence of Pauli interaction.Comment: 9 pages with 1 figur
Experimental and numerical investigation on cross flow in the PMR200 core
Papers presented to the 11th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, South Africa, 20-23 July 2015.The Prismatic Modular Reactor (PMR) is one of the major Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) concepts, which consists of hexagonal prismatic fuel blocks and reflector blocks made of nuclear grade graphite. However, the shape of graphite blocks could be easily changed by neutron damage during the reactor operation and the shape change can make the gaps between the blocks inducing bypass flow. Two types of gap shape should be considered. The vertical gap and horizontal gap are called bypass gap and cross gap, respectively. The cross gap complicates flow field in reactor core by connecting coolant channel and bypass gap and it could lead to loss of effective coolant flow in fuel blocks. In this paper, cross flow experimental facility was constructed to investigate the cross flow phenomena in the core of the VHTR and the experiment was carried out under varying flow rates and gap sizes. The results of the experiments were compared with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis results. In order to apply the CFD code to the cross flow phenomena, the prediction capability of the CFD code was verified. Good agreement between experimental results and CFD predictions was observed and the characteristics of the cross flow was discussed in detail. This work was supported by a Basic Atomic Energy Research Institute (BAERI) grant funded by the Korean government Ministry of Education and Science Technology (MEST) (NRF-2010-0018759)am201
Vortex wandering in a forest of splayed columnar defects
We investigate the scaling properties of single flux lines in a random
pinning landscape consisting of splayed columnar defects. Such correlated
defects can be injected into Type II superconductors by inducing nuclear
fission or via direct heavy ion irradiation. The result is often very efficient
pinning of the vortices which gives, e.g., a strongly enhanced critical
current. The wandering exponent \zeta and the free energy exponent \omega of a
single flux line in such a disordered environment are obtained analytically
from scaling arguments combined with extreme-value statistics. In contrast to
the case of point disorder, where these exponents are universal, we find a
dependence of the exponents on details in the probability distribution of the
low lying energies of the columnar defects. The analytical results show
excellent agreement with numerical transfer matrix calculations in two and
three dimensions.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
Potential Use of American College of Radiology BI-RADS Mammography Atlas for Reporting and Assessing Lesions Detected on Dedicated Breast CT Imaging: Preliminary Study
Rationale and Objectives Dedicated breast computed tomography (DBCT) is an emerging and promising modality for breast lesions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential use of applying the BI-RADS Mammography Atlas 5th Edition for reporting and assessing breast lesions on DBCT. Currently, no atlas exists for DBCT. Materials and Methods Four radiologists trained in breast imaging were recruited in this institutional review board-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant study. The enrolled radiologists, who were blinded to mammographic and histopathologic findings, individually reviewed 30 randomized DBCT cases that contained marked lesions. Thirty-four lesions were included in this study: 24 (70.6%) masses, 7 (20.6%) calcifications, and 3 (8.8%) architectural distortions. Eight (23.5%) lesions were malignant and 26 (76.5%) were benign. The reader was asked to specify according to the BI-RADS Mammography Atlas for each marked DBCT lesion: primary findings, features, breast density, and final assessment. We calculated readers' diagnostic performances for differentiating between benign and malignant lesions and interobserver variability for reporting and assessing lesions using a generalized estimating equation and the Fleiss kappa (κ) statistic. Results The estimated overall sensitivity of the readers was 0.969, and the specificity was 0.529. There were no significant differences in the sensitivity and the specificity between lesion types. For reporting the presence of a primary finding, the overall substantial agreement (κ = 0.70) was seen. In assigning the breast density and the final assessment, the overall agreement was moderate (κ = 0.53) and fair (κ = 0.30). Conclusion The use of the BI-RADS Mammography Atlas 5th Edition for DBCT showed high performance and good agreement among readers
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data
We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino
oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS
data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed
as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear
Power Plant. The search is performed by electron
antineutrino\,() disappearance between six reactors and two
detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral
comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction
from the RENO measurement can explore reactor oscillations
to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded
region of \,eV. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed
region with the best fit of \,eV and
=0.080.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of
obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO,
NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures: This manuscript has been significantly revised by
the joint reanalysis by RENO and NEOS Collaborations. (In the previous
edition, the RENO collaboration used publicly available NEOS data to evaluate
the expected neutrino spectrum at NEOS.
Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section
ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum
pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7
TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are
based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi
Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and
Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times
the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls
faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the
branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06
+/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for
anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are
statistical and systematic, respectively.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final
states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and
missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a
center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two
complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a
specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic
edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of
dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states
including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and
missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the
standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to
the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a
region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector
efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM
physics not considered in this paper.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead
collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the
pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80
GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be
in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The
ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the
number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for
all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
