The spatial distribution of O-B5 stars in the solar neighborhood as measured by Hipparcos
We have developed a method to calculate the fundamental parameters of the
vertical structure of the Galaxy in the solar neighborhood from trigonometric
parallaxes alone. The method takes into account Lutz-Kelker-type biases in a
self-consistent way and has been applied to a sample of O-B5 stars obtained
from the Hipparcos catalog. We find that the Sun is located 24.2 +/- 1.7
(random) +/- 0.4 (systematic) pc above the galactic plane and that the disk
O-B5 stellar population is distributed with a scale height of 34.2 +/- 0.8
(random) +/- 2.5 (systematic) pc and an integrated surface density of (1.62 +/-
0.04 (random) +/- 0.14 (systematic)) 10^{-3} stars pc^{-2}. A halo component is
also detected in the distribution and constitutes at least ~5% of the total
O-B5 population. The O-B5 stellar population within ~100 pc of the Sun has an
anomalous spatial distribution, with a less-than-average number density. This

Optical Technologies for UV Remote Sensing Instruments
Over the last decade significant advances in technology have made possible development of instruments with substantially improved efficiency in the UV spectral region. In the area of optical coatings and materials, the importance of recent developments in chemical vapor deposited (CVD) silicon carbide (SiC) mirrors, SiC films, and multilayer coatings in the context of ultraviolet instrumentation design are discussed. For example, the development of chemically vapor deposited (CVD) silicon carbide (SiC) mirrors, with high ultraviolet (UV) reflectance and low scatter surfaces, provides the opportunity to extend higher spectral/spatial resolution capability into the 50-nm region. Optical coatings for normal incidence diffraction gratings are particularly important for the evolution of efficient extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrographs. SiC films are important for optimizing the spectrograph performance in the 90 nm spectral region. The performance evaluation of the flight optical components for the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument, a spectroscopic instrument to fly aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission, designed to study dynamic processes, temperatures, and densities in the plasma of the upper atmosphere of the Sun in the wavelength range from 50 nm to 160 nm, is discussed. The optical components were evaluated for imaging and scatter in the UV. The performance evaluation of SOHO/CDS (Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer) flight gratings tested for spectral resolution and scatter in the DGEF is reviewed and preliminary results on resolution and scatter testing of Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) technology development diffraction gratings are presented
A high-resolution radio survey of the Vela supernova remnant
This paper presents a high-resolution radio continuum (843 MHz) survey of the
Vela supernova remnant. The contrast between the structures in the central
pulsar-powered nebula of the remnant and the synchrotron radiation shell allows
the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite
class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales
comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and
make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the
resolved shell filaments. The survey, made with the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope, covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of

New Herbig-Haro Objects and Giant Outflows in Orion
We present the results of a photographic and CCD imaging survey for
Herbig-Haro (HH) objects in the L1630 and L1641 giant molecular clouds in
Orion. The new HH flows were initially identified from a deep H-alpha film from
the recently commissioned AAO/UKST H-alpha Survey of the southern sky. Our
scanned H-alpha and broad band R images highlight both the improved resolution
of the H-alpha survey and the excellent contrast of the H-alpha flux with
respect to the broad band R. Comparative IVN survey images allow us to
distinguish between emission and reflection nebulosity. Our CCD H-alpha, [SII],
continuum and I band images confirm the presence of a parsec-scale HH flow
associated with the Ori I-2 cometary globule and several parsec-scale strings
of HH emission centred on the L1641-N infrared cluster. Several smaller
outflows display one-sided jets. Our results indicate that for declinations
south of -6 degrees in L1641, parsec-scale flows appear to be the major force

Genetic differentiation of European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) populations in Serbia, based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analyses
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The structure and diversity of grayling (<it>Thymallus thymallus</it>) populations have been well studied in most of its native habitat; however the southernmost populations of the Balkan Peninsula remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to assess the genetic diversity of Serbian grayling populations, detect the impact of stocking and provide guidelines for conservation and management.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eighty grayling individuals were collected from four rivers (Ibar, Lim, Drina and Rzav). The mitochondrial DNA control region (CR; 595 bp of the 3'end and 74 bp of flanking tRNA) and the ATP6 gene (630 bp fragment) were sequenced for 20 individuals (five from each locality). In addition, all individuals were genotyped with 12 microsatellite loci. The diversity and structure of the populations as well as the recent and ancient population declines were studied using specialized software.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We detected three new haplotypes in the mtDNA CR and four haplotypes in the ATP6 gene of which three had not been described before. Previously, one CR haplotype and two ATP6 gene haplotypes had been identified as allochthonous, originating from Slovenia. Reconstruction of phylogenetic relations placed the remaining two CR haplotypes from the River Danube drainage of Serbia into a new clade, which is related to the previously described sister Slovenian clade. These two clades form a new Balkan clade. Microsatellite marker analysis showed that all four populations are genetically distinct from each other without any sign of intra-population structure, although stocking of the most diverse population (Drina River) was confirmed by mtDNA analysis. Recent and historical population declines of Serbian grayling do not differ from those of other European populations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study shows that (1) the Ibar, Lim and Drina Rivers grayling populations are genetically distinct from populations outside of Serbia and thus should be managed as native populations in spite of some introgression in the Drina River population and (2) the Rzav River population is not appropriate for further stocking activities since it originates from stocked Slovenian grayling. However, the Rzav River population does not represent an immediate danger to other populations because it is physically isolated from these.</p
Towards a free-free template for CMB foregrounds
A full-sky template map of the Galactic free-free foreground emission
component is increasingly important for high sensitivity CMB experiments. We
use the recently published \ha data of both the northern and southern skies as
the basis for such a template.
The first step is to correct the \ha maps for dust absorption using the 100
m dust maps of Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis (1998). We show that for a
range of longitudes, the Galactic latitude distribution of absorption suggests
that it is 33 per cent of the full extragalactic absorption. A reliable
absorption-corrected \ha map can be produced for per cent of the sky;
the area for which a template cannot be recovered is the Galactic plane area
, and some isolated
dense dust clouds at intermediate latitudes.
The second step is to convert the dust-corrected \ha data into a predicted
radio surface brightness. The free-free emission formula is revised to give an
accurate expression (1 per cent) for the radio emission covering the frequency
range 100 MHz to 100 GHz and the electron temperature range 3000 to 20000 K.
The main uncertainty when applying this expression is the variation of electron
temperature across the sky. The emission formula is verified in several
extended H{\sc ii} regions using data in the range 408 to 2326 MHz.
A full-sky free-free template map is presented at 30 GHz; the scaling to
other frequencies is given. The Haslam et al. all-sky 408 MHz map of the sky
can be corrected for this free-free component, which amounts to a

The Vertical Structure of the Outer Milky Way HI Disk
We examine the outer Galactic HI disk for deviations from the b=0 plane by
constructing maps of disk surface density, mean height, and thickness. We find
that the Galactic warp is well described by a vertical offset plus two Fourier
modes of frequency 1 and 2, all of which grow with Galactocentric radius.
Adding the m=2 mode accounts for the large asymmetry between the northern and
southern warps. We use a Morlet wavelet transform to investigate the spatial
and frequency localization of higher frequency modes; these modes are often
referred to as "scalloping." We find that the m=10 and 15 scalloping modes are
well above the noise, but localized; this suggests that the scalloping does not

The Structure of the Star-forming Cluster RCW 38
We present a study of the structure of the high mass star-forming region
RCW~38 and the spatial distribution of its young stellar population. Spitzer
IRAC photometry 3-8um are combined with 2MASS near-IR data to identify young
stellar objects by IR-excess emission from their circumstellar material.
Chandra X-ray data are used to identify class III pre-main sequence stars
lacking circumstellar material. We identify 624 YSOs: 23 class 0/I and 90 flat
spectrum protostars, 437 Class II stars, and 74 Class III stars. We also
identify 29 (27 new) O star candidates over the IRAC field. Seventy-two stars
exhibit IR-variability, including seven class 0/I and 12 flat spectrum YSOs. A
further 177 tentative candidates are identified by their location in the IRAC
[3.6] vs. [3.6]-[5.8] cmd. We find strong evidence of subclustering in the
region. Three subclusters were identified surrounding the central cluster, with
massive and variable stars in each subcluster. The central region shows
evidence of distinct spatial distributions of the protostars and pre-main
sequence stars. A previously detected IR cluster, DB2001_Obj36, has been
established as a subcluster of RCW 38. This suggests that star formation in RCW
38 occurs over a more extended area than previously thought. The gas to dust
ratio is examined using the X-ray derived hydrogen column density, N_H and the
K-band extinction, and found to be consistent with the diffuse ISM, in contrast
with Serpens & NGC1333. We posit that the high photoionising flux of massive
stars in RCW 38 affects the agglomeration of the dust grains.Comment: 98 pages, 15 figure
Characterisation of the MALT90 Survey and the Mopra Telescope at 90 GHz
We characterise the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz Survey (MALT90) and the Mopra telescope at 90 GHz. We combine repeated position-switched observations of the source G300.968+01.145 with a map of the same source in order to estimate the pointing reliability of the position-switched observations and, by extension, the MALT90 survey; we estimate our pointing uncertainty to be 8 arcsec. We model the two strongest sources of systematic gain variability as functions of elevation and time-of-day and quantify the remaining absolute flux uncertainty. Corrections based on these two variables reduce the scatter in repeated observations from 12%–25% down to 10%–17%. We find no evidence for intrinsic source variability in G300.968+01.145. For certain applications, the corrections described herein will be integral for improving the absolute flux calibration of MALT90 maps and other observations using the Mopra telescope at 90 GHz
The <i>Herschel</i> view of the massive star-forming region NGC 6334
Aims: Fundamental to any theory of high-mass star formation are gravity and turbulence. Their relative importance, which probably changes during cloud evolution, is not known. By investigating the spatial and density structure of the high-mass star-forming complex NGC 6334 we aim to disentangle the contributions of turbulence and gravity.
Methods: We used Herschel PACS and SPIRE imaging observations from the HOBYS key programme at wavelengths of 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm to construct dust temperature and column density maps. Using probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the column density determined for the whole complex and for four distinct sub-regions (distinguished on the basis of differences in the column density, temperature, and radiation field), we characterize the density structure of the complex. We investigate the spatial structure using the Δ-variance, which probes the relative amount of structure on different size scales and traces possible energy injection mechanisms into the molecular cloud.
Results: The Δ-variance analysis suggests that the significant scales of a few parsec that were found are caused by energy injection due to expanding HII regions, which are numerous, and by the lengths of filaments seen everywhere in the complex. The column density PDFs have a lognormal shape at low densities and a clearly defined power law at high densities for all sub-regions whose slope is linked to the exponent α of an equivalent spherical density distribution. In particular with α = 2.37, the central sub-region is largly dominated by gravity, caused by individual collapsing dense cores and global collapse of a larger region. The collapse is faster than free-fall (which would lead only to α = 2) and thus requires a more dynamic scenario (external compression, flows). The column density PDFs suggest that the different sub-regions are at different evolutionary stages, especially the central sub-region, which seems to be in a more evolved stage
