    <div>This is an annotated data management plan (DMP) template for an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) data management plan.<br></div><div><br></div><div>This document (available in .pdf and .docx formats) was created using the <a href="https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk/">DMPonline tool</a>, which provides templates for structuring major research funders' DMPs.     Measuring transverse velocities in gravitationally lensed extragalactic systems using an annual parallax effect

    A parallax method to determine transverse velocity in a gravitationally lensed system is described. Using the annual motion of the Earth around the Sun allows us to probe the local structure of the magnification map that, under certain assumptions, can be used to infer the effective transverse velocity. The method is applied to OGLE data for QSO2237+0305 and the velocity value is estimated to be about (15 +/- 10) km/s if attributed to the lensing galaxy or about (420 +/- 300) km/s if attributed to the quasar. We find this estimate unreasonably small and conclude that we have not measured a parallax effect. We give a short list of properties that a system should possess to allow a successful implementation of this method.Comment: v2: journal reference update

    A preliminary investigation of adult defence style and physiological reactivity to infant distress signals

    Species whose offspring require extended care-giving ought to be predisposed to being biologically responsive to their infant\u27s signalling. This paper examined the interplay between biological and psychological aspects of adult response to an infant\u27s distress. HR (heart rate) and GSR (galvanic skin response) were recorded continuously, while 50 adults listened to white noise and an infant cry audio recording. Participants completed the defence style questionnaire and the state trait anxiety inventory. HR acceleration occurred in response to the control sound, while HR decelerated in response to the infant cry. GSR responsiveness was positively correlated with immature and neurotic defence styles. When controlling for other variables, immature defence was a unique and independent predictor of GSR change in response to infant distress. Defence demonstrated a stronger relationship than self-reported anxiety, than that with physiological responsiveness. Employing defence mechanisms appears to reduce an individual\u27s perceived anxiety, though it has little effect on physiological arousal levels

    Computational advances in gravitational microlensing: a comparison of CPU, GPU, and parallel, large data codes

    To assess how future progress in gravitational microlensing computation at high optical depth will rely on both hardware and software solutions, we compare a direct inverse ray-shooting code implemented on a graphics processing unit (GPU) with both a widely-used hierarchical tree code on a single-core CPU, and a recent implementation of a parallel tree code suitable for a CPU-based cluster supercomputer. We examine the accuracy of the tree codes through comparison with a direct code over a much wider range of parameter space than has been feasible before. We demonstrate that all three codes present comparable accuracy, and choice of approach depends on considerations relating to the scale and nature of the microlensing problem under investigation. On current hardware, there is little difference in the processing speed of the single-core CPU tree code and the GPU direct code, however the recent plateau in single-core CPU speeds means the existing tree code is no longer able to take advantage of Moore's law-like increases in processing speed. Instead, we anticipate a rapid increase in GPU capabilities in the next few years, which is advantageous to the direct code. We suggest that progress in other areas of astrophysical computation may benefit from a transition to GPUs through the use of "brute force" algorithms, rather than attempting to port the current best solution directly to a GPU language -- for certain classes of problems, the simple implementation on GPUs may already be no worse than an optimised single-core CPU version.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronom

    Microlensing

    Microlensing observations have now become a useful tool in searching for non--luminous astrophysical compact objects (brown dwarfs, faint stars, neutron stars, black holes and even planets). Originally conceived for establishing whether the halo of the Galaxy is composed of this type of objects, the ongoing searches are actually also sensitive to the dark constituents of other Galactic components (thin and thick disks, outer spheroid, bulge). We discuss here the present searches for microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Galactic bulge (EROS, MACHO, OGLE and DUO collaborations). We analyse the information which can be obtained regarding the spatial distribution and motion of the lensing objects as well as about their mass function and their overall contribution to the mass of the Galaxy. We also discuss the additional signals, such as the parallax due to the motion of the Earth, the effects due to the finite source size and the lensing events involving binary objects, which can further constrain the lens properties. We describe the future prospects for these searches and the further proposed observations which could help to elucidate these issues, such as microlensing of stars in the Andromeda galaxy, satellite parallax measurements and infrared observations.Comment: Latex file, 59 p., 13 ps figures, to appear in Physics Reports (postcript file replaced by latex file

    Limits on the Transverse Velocity of the Lensing Galaxy in Q2237+0305 from the Lack of Strong Microlensing Variability

    We present a method for the determination of upper limits on the transverse velocity of the lensing galaxy in the quadruple quasar system Q2237+0305, based on the lack of strong microlensing signatures in the quasar lightcurves. The limits we derive here are based on four months of high quality monitoring data, by comparing the low amplitudes of the lightcurves of the four components with extensive numerical simulations. We make use of the absence of strong variability of the components (especially components B and D) to infer that a "flat" time interval of such a length is only compatible with an effective transverse velocity of the lensing galaxy of v_bulk <=630 km/s for typical microlenses masses of M_microlens=0.1 M_solar (or v_bulk <=2160 km/s for M_microlens=1.0 M_solar) at the 90% confidence level.     Probing the Galaxy's bars via the Hercules stream

    It has been suggested that a resonance between a rotating bar and stars in the solar neighbourhood can produce the so called 'Hercules stream'. Recently, a second bar may have been identified in the Galactic centre, the so called 'long bar', which is longer and much flatter than the traditional Galactic bar, and has a similar mass. We looked at the dynamical effects of both bars, separately and together, on orbits of stars integrated backwards from local position and velocities, and a model of the Galactic potential which includes the bars directly. Both bars can produce Hercules like features, and allow us to measure the rotation rate of the bar(s). We measure a pattern speed, for both bars, of 1.87 +/- 0.02 times the local circular frequency. This is on par with previous measurements for the Galactic bar, although we do adopt a slightly different Solar motion. Finally, we identify a new kinematic feature in local velocity space, caused by the long bar, which is tempting to identify with the high velocity 'Arcturus' stream.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, Accepted to MNRAS, Corrected for errat
