Separate and Unequal: A Comment on the Urban Development Aspect of Brownfields Programs
Several states and the federal government have proposed and enacted what are termed Brownfields Programs. These initia- tives have two goals: 1) creation of employment in economically distressed areas surrounded by urban brownfields (contami- nated properties); and 2) preservation of greenfields (pristine land) from development. This Article discusses the efficacy of the urban development aspect of these initiatives. Specifically it argues that while cities (notably those in the northeast and northcentral United States) may have suffered the impact of deindustrialization disproportionately to their respective suburbs, these programs create a duality of environmental protection that will consign the cities to permanent second class environmental status. These programs provide a short term fix for a long term problem. This Article proposes that what is needed is a reexamination of environmental standards as they apply to both city and suburbs
Aluminum-titanium hydride-boron carbide composite provides lightweight neutron shield material
Inexpensive lightweight neutron shield material has high strength and ductility and withstands high internal heat generation rates without excessive thermal stress. This composite material combines structural and thermal properties of aluminum, neutron moderating properties of titanium hydride, and neutron absorbing characteristics of boron carbide
The ultra-sensitive electrical detection of spin Rabi oscillation at paramagnetic defects
A short review of the pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance (pEDMR)
experiment is presented. PEDMR allows the highly sensitive observation of
coherent electron spin motion of charge carriers and defects in semiconductors
by means of transient current measurements. The theoretical foundations, the
experimental implementation, its sensitivity and its potential with regard to
the investigation of electronic transitions in semiconductors are discussed.
For the example of the P_b center at the crystalline silicon (111) to silicon
dioxide interface it is shown experimentally how one can detect spin
Rabi-oscillation, its dephasing, coherence decays and spin-coupling effects.Comment: The manuscript has been submitted for journal publicatio
Expanding horizons, expanding self: an incentive to get out of the classroom and start using art to explore your community with placed-based arts investigation
The three primary components of Place-based Arts Investigation (PBAI) are an understanding of place, arts-integration, and arts-based research, each with a heritage in and of itself. These ideas work in tandem to form the keystones of PBAI, a model for interdisciplinary arts-based learning that utilizes the multiple languages of art as methods of inquiry and self-reflection without stifling curiosity. Developed with the intention to provide a true model for ‘arts integration’ in teaching and learning, PBAI uses the distinct advantages of visual art education to engage the learner through multiple modes of inquiry while providing periods of guided reflection (Gude, 2007). PBAI purports that every community performs as a microcosm of the world at large. Upon further inspection, the community (the place, the people, and the ways in which they are connected) will elicit the same natural history, power struggles, and ethical questions of any standard curriculum. By a community’s particularity, it becomes accessible and relatable. Supported by case studies and qualitative research from personal histories and interviews, this thesis book explores PBAI within the context of three facets of ‘place’ in depth: Urban Wild, Downtown or the Built Environment, and Centers of Culture. Adherence to the principles of PBAI has the capacity to empower student learning, develop empathy for environmental and social justice, and to build engaged citizens who are invested in the future of their community
A GPU-Enabled, High-Resolution Cosmological Microlensing Parameter Survey
In the era of synoptic surveys, the number of known gravitationally lensed
quasars is set to increase by over an order of magnitude. These new discoveries
will enable a move from single-quasar studies to investigations of statistical
samples, presenting new opportunities to test theoretical models for the
structure of quasar accretion discs and broad emission line regions (BELRs). As
one crucial step in preparing for this influx of new lensed systems, a
large-scale exploration of microlensing convergence-shear parameter space is
warranted, requiring the computation of O(10^5) high resolution magnification
maps. Based on properties of known lensed quasars, and expectations from
accretion disc/BELR modelling, we identify regions of convergence-shear
parameter space, map sizes, smooth matter fractions, and pixel resolutions that
should be covered. We describe how the computationally time-consuming task of
producing ~290000 magnification maps with sufficient resolution (10000^2
pixel/map) to probe scales from the inner edge of the accretion disc to the
BELR can be achieved in ~400 days on a 100 teraflop/s high performance
computing facility, where the processing performance is achieved with graphics
processing units. We illustrate a use-case for the parameter survey by
investigating the effects of varying the lens macro-model on accretion disc
constraints in the lensed quasar Q2237+0305. We find that although all
constraints are consistent within their current error bars, models with more
densely packed microlenses tend to predict shallower accretion disc radial
temperature profiles. With a large parameter survey such as the one described
here, such systematics on microlensing measurements could be fully explored.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
