Inter-provincial migration in Italy: a comparison between Italians and foreigners
Internal migration in Italy increased in the 2000s due to foreigners residing in the country. Foreigners have changed the characteristics of Italy’s internal migration. Extended gravity models were run to highlight the differences between the migratory behaviours of Italians and foreigners. The model was implemented to detect the different effects of the Italian and foreign populations, and the distances between the provinces of origin and destinations of the inter-provincial migration of Italians and foreigners. Estimations obtained for the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 highlight the different evolutions of the phenomenon

Determinants of Productivity of Ukrainian Firms
This paper examines the determinants of total factor productivity (TFP) of Ukrainian firms in manufacturing and services, using micro-level data for the years 2005 and 2013. We first estimate regressions for the pooled dataset for the manufacturing and service sectors jointly, and then separately for each sector. Our empirical results show a positive link between the total factor productivity, intangible assets, capital intensity, firm size, competition in the industry, ownership status, and firm internationalization (exports and imports). In addition, we find that the determinants of productivity differ among the sectors and years of our sample
Narrativization of Religious Conversion Experience in the Environment of Evangelical Protestantism in Ukraine
In the context of this article and in the perspective of interpretational approach we have considered possibilities of sociological analysis of a religious
conversion. Based on examples of Evangelical Protestantism communities functioning
on the territory of Ukraine the author analyzes peculiarities of building and structuring
conversion narratives, a strategy of representation of the religious experience, linguistic
means and tools used in this process. A religious conversion is considered as a particular
discursive practice or a religious communication related to producing a narrative, which
on the one hand reflects changes occurring to a person who passed through a conversion experience, and on the other hand the narrative itself preconditions such changes
by means of adaptation of a canonic language of the religious group. Conversion cases
considered by the author allow making a conclusion about existence of steady communicative conversion models at the level of Evangelical Protestantism which determinative
distinction is reconstruction of the biographical experience in compliance with the “plot”
predetermined by a canonic discourse of the considered communities
Introduction: Determinants of International Relations in the East Asian Context
The monograph provides knowledge on the complex nature of both external and internal determinants influencing foreign policies of East Asian countries. Through a range of case studies on Japan, China, Taiwan and North Korea, the authors analyze international relations in East Asia as a mosaic of intertwining processes of globalization and regionalization, interests of global and regional powers, local social and economic conditions, national institutional arrangements, and even personal factors. They argue that sometimes a sudden change of one small element in this mosaic suffices to influence the whole system. Instead of providing a simplified interpretation of the analyzed processes, the monograph tries to illustrate them in their entire complexity
The Taiwanese Dimension of the Cross–Strait Equation after the Sunflower Movement
Instead of providing a simplified interpretation of the analyzed processes, the monograph tries to illustrate them in their entire complexity. For over five decades Taiwan was predominantly perceived by the international community as a function of regional balance of power network in East Asia and of the United States and People’s Republic of China relations. However, after almost 30 years of democratic change, Taiwanese internal politics is slowly growing out of the diplomatic cross–strait framework and Beijing–Taipei economic rapprochement scenarios. The Sunflower Movement protests and November 29th, 2014 defeat of ruling Kuomintang in local elections indicate an introduction of a new variable – Taiwanese society – in cross–strait formula
Tradition as a Communication System. A Pragmatic Approach
A context of my paper is the debate on reason, tradition and traditional
communities, in which this moral and epistemological issues were
discussed as a part of general socio-philosophical theory of modernity.
In particular I intend to locate my considerations in the context of
formal-pragmatic theory of modern communicative rationality
developed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom. I will provide a
competitive model of the rationality of tradition by applying a
conceptual toolkit of pragmatically oriented analysis to explain
practices connected with vocabulary of tradition. I argue that tradition
as a communication system has a fully rational structure. My main claim
is that communicative structure of tradition has a rational structure of
language game. This structure includes defined principles of
communication for members of closed tradition-grounded community
and rule of inclusion for potential new members.
Firstly I consider closely internal principles of communication
within the framework of tradition contrasting them shortly with
normative-deontic rules of the postenlightenment idea of pragmatic
communication discussed by Jürgen Habermas and Robert Brandom.
After that I examine the rule of inclusion — the rule, which mediates
between closed system of tradition-based community and his
environment.Numer został przygotowany przy wsparciu Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego
The Finance Growth Link: Comparative Analysis of Two Eastern African Countries
This paper examines the finance growth link of two low-income Sub-Saharan African economies – Ethiopia and Kenya – which have different financial systems but are located in the same region. Unlike previous studies, we account for the role of non-bank financial intermediaries and formally model the effect of structural breaks caused by policy and market-induced economic events. We used the Vector Autoregressive model (VAR), conducted impulse response analysis and examined variance decomposition. We find that neither the level of financial intermediary development nor the level of stock market development explains economic growth in Kenya. For Ethiopia, which has no stock market, intermediary development is found to be driven by economic growth. Three important inferences can be made from these findings. First, the often reported positive link between finance and growth might be caused by the aggregation of countries at different stages of economic growth and financial development. Second, country-specific economic situations and episodes are important in studying the relationship between financial development and economic growth. Third, there is the possibility that the econometric model employed to test the finance growth link plays a role in the empirical result, as we note that prior studies did not introduce control variables
The Perception of Queen Victoria in American Press of Her Times
Fake news. A continuation or rejection of the traditional news paradigm?
In the article, I analysed the problem of fake news in the context of the traditional paradigm of a news story. The traditional paradigm posits that, most of all, a piece of information is true. However in contemporary media, there exist pieces of information which are fabricated and untrue. It is not a new phenomenon, yet it has intensified in recent years. News stories are fabricated for entertainment, political, or commercial purposes. They are carriers of propaganda and profit. The essence of fake news is the intentional misleading of the receiver for achieving the above gains. It is difficult to verify their veracity, and identify fake news items due to their similarity to real pieces of news. That is why they are becoming a part of the media landscape in which we will probably have to exist
