Juan Goytisoloâs readers had every reason to assume that TelĂłn de
boca (2003) would be his last novel. Goytisolo himself pointedly declared after
its publication that he was retiring as a novelist. But then in 2008, he surprised
his readers by publishing El exiliado de aquĂ y allĂĄ, a continuation of his 1982
novel, Paisajes después de la batalla, and a biting satire that presented a scathing
portrait of contemporary society. In 2014, on the occasion of being named the
winner of the prestigious «Premio Cervantes» (Cervantes Prize), Goytisolo surprised
his public yet again by commenting that El exiliado de aquà y allå was «perhaps
unnecessary.» This article argues against Goytisoloâs assertion and demonstrates
that El exiliado is indeed «necessary.» It is a brilliant contribution to a rich satirical tradition; it completes the vision of the world that Goytisolo has elaborated
throughout the years, and it marks the authorâs farewell to fiction
Focusing resonance cones
The potential for an oscillating ring source immersed in cold, magnetized, collisionless plasma in the resonance cone regime (K/K<0) is evaluated exactly and asymptotically, giving insight into the gross spatial behavior of the focusing resonance cones. The nature of the singularity in potential is clarified by the introduction of a noninfinitesimal collision frequency. Thermal effects are considered numerically, revealing an interesting interference structure in potential as well as a density depression near the focus of the cone due to the ponderomotive force

Constraints on neutrino-photon interactions from rare Z decays
It is shown that the rare decays and are useful to put model-independent bounds on
neutrino-one-photon and neutrino-two-photon interactions. The results are then
used to constrain the neutrino magnetic moment and the double radiative
decay . It is found that the decay gives a more stringent bound on the neutrino magnetic
moment than that obtained from ; the latter
decay in turn gives limits on the neutrino-two-photon interaction that are less
stringent than those obtained for a sterile neutrino from the analysis
of conversion.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, elsart forma
Inference on periodicity of circadian time series
Estimation of the period length of time-course data from cyclical biological processes, such as those driven by the circadian pacemaker, is crucial for inferring the properties of the biological clock found in many living organisms. We propose a methodology for period estimation based on spectrum resampling (SR) techniques. Simulation studies show that SR is superior and more robust to non-sinusoidal and noisy cycles than a currently used routine based on Fourier approximations. In addition, a simple fit to the oscillations using linear least squares is available, together with a non-parametric test for detecting changes in period length which allows for period estimates with different variances, as frequently encountered in practice. The proposed methods are motivated by and applied to various data examples from chronobiology

A Search for Wide Companions to the Extrasolar Planetary System HR 8799
The extrasolar planetary system around HR 8799 is the first multiplanet
system ever imaged. It is also, by a wide margin, the highest mass system with
>27 Jupiters of planetary mass past 25 AU. This is a remarkable system with no
analogue with any other known planetary system. In the first part of this paper
we investigate the nature of two faint objects imaged near the system. These
objects are considerably fainter (H=20.4, and 21.6 mag) and more distant
(projected separations of 612, and 534 AU) than the three known planetary
companions b, c, and d (68-24 AU). It is possible that these two objects could
be lower mass planets (of mass ~5 and ~3 Jupiters) that have been scattered to
wider orbits. We make the first direct comparison of newly reduced archival
Gemini adaptive optics images to archival HST/NICMOS images. With nearly a
decade between these epochs we can accurately assess the proper motion nature
of each candidate companion. We find that both objects are unbound to HR 8799
and are background. We estimate that HR 8799 has no companions of H<22 from
~5-15 arcsec. Any scattered giant planets in the HR 8799 system are >600 AU or
less than 3 Jupiters in mass. In the second part of this paper we carry out a
search for wider common proper motion objects. While we identify no bound
companions to HR 8799, our search yields 16 objects within 1 degree in the
NOMAD catalog and POSS DSS images with similar (+/-20 mas/yr) proper motions to
HR 8799, three of which warrant follow-up observations.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa
Anthropogenic ecosystem fragmentation drives shared and unique patterns of sexual signal divergence among three species of Bahamian mosquitofish
When confronted with similar environmental challenges, different organisms can exhibit dissimilar phenotypic responses. Therefore, understanding patterns of phenotypic divergence for closely related species requires considering distinct evolutionary histories. Here, we investigated how a common form of human-induced environmental alteration, habitat fragmentation, may drive phenotypic divergence among three closely related species of Bahamian mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.). Focusing on one phenotypic trait (male coloration), having a priori predictions of divergence, we tested whether populations persisting in fragmented habitats differed from those inhabiting unfragmented habitats and examined the consistency of the pattern across species. Species exhibited both shared and unique patterns of phenotypic divergence between the two types of habitats, with shared patterns representing the stronger effect. For all species, populations in fragmented habitats had fewer dorsal-fin spots. In contrast, the magnitude and trajectory of divergence in dorsal-fin color, a sexually selected trait, differed among species. We identified fragmentation-mediated increased turbidity as a possible driver of these trait shifts. These results suggest that even closely related species can exhibit diverse phenotypic responses when encountering similar human-mediated selection regimes. This element of unpredictability complicates forecasting the phenotypic responses of wild organisms faced with anthropogenic change - an important component of biological conservation and ecosystem management
Constraining Jet/Disk Geometry and Radiative Processes in Stellar Black Holes XTE J1118+480 and GX 339-4
We present results from modeling of quasi-simultaneous broad band (radio
through X-ray) observations of the galactic stellar black hole (BH) transient
X-ray binary (XRB) systems XTE J1118+480 and GX 339-4 using an irradiated disc
+ compact jet model. In addition to quantifying the physical properties of the
jet, we have developed a new irradiated disc model which also constrains the
geometry and temperature of the outer accretion disc by assuming a disc heated
by viscous energy release and X-ray irradiation from the inner regions. For the
source XTE J1118+480, which has better spectral coverage of the two in optical
and near-IR (OIR) wavelengths, we show that the entire broad band continuum can
be well described by an outflow-dominated model + an irradiated disc. The
best-fit radius of the outer edge of the disc is consistent with the Roche lobe
geometry of the system, and the temperature of the outer edge of the accretion
disc is similar to those found for other XRBs. Irradiation of the disc by the
jet is found to be negligible for this source. For GX 339-4, the entire
continuum is well described by the jet-dominated model only, with no disc
component required. For the two XRBs, which have very different physical and
orbital parameters and were in different accretion states during the
observations, the sizes of the jet base are similar and both seem to prefer a
high fraction of non-thermal electrons in the acceleration/shock region and a
magnetically dominated plasma in the jet. These results, along with recent
similar results from modeling other galactic XRBs and AGNs, may suggest an
inherent unity in diversity in the geometric and radiative properties of
compact jets from accreting black holes.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Uses mn2e.cls. 17 pages, 4
