    Some Aspects of Elizabeth Seton\u27s Spiritual/Theological World

    Elizabeth Seton was influenced by three men: John Henry Hobart, an Episcopalian minister; Louis William Dubourg, a powerful Sulpician; and John Carroll, the bishop of Baltimore. Hobart represented minority views even within his own church because he was “High Church”— he believed in the importance of the episcopacy and of the sacraments. He inspired Elizabeth and strengthened her scriptural and sacramental piety. He provided readings that made her reason her decision about which church to belong to, although she did not rely on reason alone. Dubourg suggested that Elizabeth move to Baltimore, was highly instrumental in establishing Saint Joseph’s Academy, and was the first superior of the Sisters of Charity. Both Dubourg and Carroll believed that women’s education was as important as men’s and that education would be the means for Catholics to be accepted into American society. They thought that if Protestants and Catholics shared schools, they would also learn to live together. Elizabeth shared their ecumenism and accepted Protestant students at her academy. The Sulpicians’ influence on her is described, as is her experience as a member of Saint Patrick’s parish in New York

    The Church in the United States faced three main problems between 1810 and 1850: anti-Catholic prejudice, the question of how to educate Catholic children, and the need for care of orphans and the sick. Anti-Catholic prejudice in the United States, which abated somewhat immediately after the Revolution, reached new heights with the massive Irish and German immigration in this period. Conflicts between Catholics and Protestants over which version of the Bible would be used in schools and the bishops’ insistence that interpretation be provided with Bible study contributed to the prejudice. It also led to the formation of a separate Catholic school system. The Sisters of Charity and other religious communities of women and men staffed institutions to care for those who needed it, regardless of religion or ability to pay.     “Handing on the Charism,” part of a larger oral history project, was a series of interviews conducted in 2002 and 2003 among the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, their associates, and other women the Sisters helped or influenced. The article gives this New Jersey community’s history, explains the project’s methodology, and provides long excerpts from the interview transcripts. It provides conclusions about how the Sisters’ charism is being passed down as well as recommendations for how to further include the laity in it

After studying various cosmological behaviours for the homogeneous background, we investigate the fluctuations of the brane that leave spacetime unaffected.     Stable, Time-Dependent, Exact Solutions for Brane Models with a Bulk Scalar Field

    We derive two classes of brane-world solutions arising in the presence of a bulk scalar field. For static field configurations, we adopt a time-dependent, factorizable metric ansatz that allows for radion stabilization. The solutions are characterized by a non-trivial warping along the extra dimension, even in the case of a vanishing bulk cosmological constant, and lead to a variety of inflationary, time-dependent solutions of the 3D scale factor on the brane. We also derive the constraints necessary for the stability of these solutions under time-dependent perturbations of the radion field, and we demonstrate the existence of phenomenologically interesting, stable solutions with a positive cosmological constant on the brane.Comment: 24 pages, latex, 4 eps figur

    Experimental Probes of Localized Gravity: On and Off the Wall

    The phenomenology of the Randall-Sundrum model of localized gravity is analyzed in detail for the two scenarios where the Standard Model (SM) gauge and matter fields are either confined to a TeV scale 3-brane or may propagate in a slice of five dimensional anti-deSitter space. In the latter instance, we derive the interactions of the graviton, gauge, and fermion Kaluza-Klein (KK) states. The resulting phenomenological signatures are shown to be highly dependent on the value of the 5-dimensional fermion mass and differ substantially from the case where the SM fields lie on the TeV-brane. In both scenarios, we examine the collider signatures for direct production of the graviton and gauge KK towers as well as their induced contributions to precision electroweak observables. These direct and indirect signatures are found to play a complementary role in the exploration of the model parameter space. In the case where the SM field content resides on the TeV-brane, we show that the LHC can probe the full parameter space and hence will either discover or exclude this model if the scale of electroweak physics on the 3-brane is less than 10 TeV. We also show that spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking of the SM must take place on the TeV-brane.Comment: 62 pages, Latex, 22 figure

    Four--dimensional Gravity from Singular Spaces

    The modification to four--dimensional Einstein gravity at low energy in two brane models is investigated within supergravity in singular spaces. Using perturbation theory around a static BPS background, we study the effective four--dimensional gravitational theory, a scalar--tensor theory, and derive the Brans--Dicke parameter when matter is present on the positive tension brane only. We show there is an attractor mechanism towards general relativity in the matter dominated era. The dynamics of the interbrane distance are discussed. Finally, when matter lives on both branes, we find that there is a violation of the equivalence principle whose magnitude is governed by the warping of the extra dimension.Comment: 9 pages, LaTe

    Governing diversity: Dutch political parties' preferences on the role of the state in civic integration policies

    This article analyses political debates about civic integration policies in the Netherlands, so as to identify different conceptions of the role of the state in ensuring social cohesion by governing diversity. Drawing on the literature on party systems, it presents an analysis of political party positions on the role of the state in civic integration along two dimensions: economic distribution on the one hand, and sociocultural governance on the other hand. I find that while the large majority of Dutch political parties adopt authoritarian positions on the sociocultural axis in favour of state intervention to protect Dutch culture and identity, their positions diverge significantly on the classic economic Left-Right dimension. The most contentious issue in Dutch civic integration politics is whether the state, the market or individual migrants should be responsible for financing and organising courses. Thus, this article proposes an innovative model for analysing the politics of citizenship, which enables us to comprehend how citizenship policies are shaped not only by views on how identity and culture relate to social cohesion, but also by diverging perspectives on socio-economic justice.Cities, Migration and Global Interdependenc

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bbˉb\bar{b} pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set

    We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb−1^{-1}. We consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with originating from the decay of a bb quark. We place 95% credibility level upper limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction for several mass hypotheses between 90 and 150GeV/c2150 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2. For a Higgs boson mass of 125GeV/c2125 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2, the observed (expected) limit is 6.7 (3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let

    Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.
