    HI Observations of Early-Type Galaxies

    We present high resolution (15") HI observations of the S0 galaxy NGC 404. We derive an HI mass of MHi = 6.7 x 10???, in good agreement with previous measurements. The HI is distributed in a broad annulus (a doughnut) and extends out to a diameter of 9', well beyond the optical diameter of 6'. The velocity field is regular and shows, surprisingly, a declining rotation curve. This decline is purely Keplerian, strongly suggesting that all the mass is contained within the inner 200"

    An H2CO 6cm Maser Pinpointing a Possible Circumstellar Torus in IRAS18566+0408

    We report observations of 6cm, 3.6cm, 1.3cm, and 7mm radio continuum, conducted with the Very Large Array towards IRAS18566+0408, one of the few sources known to harbor H2CO 6cm maser emission. Our observations reveal that the emission is dominated by an ionized jet at cm wavelengths. Spitzer/IRAC images from GLIMPSE support this interpretation, given the presence of 4.5um excess emission at approximately the same orientation as the cm continuum. The 7mm emission is dominated by thermal dust from a flattened structure almost perpendicular to the ionized jet, thus, the 7mm emission appears to trace a torus associated with a young massive stellar object. The H2CO 6cm maser is coincident with the center of the torus-like structure. Our observations rule out radiative pumping via radio continuum as the excitation mechanism for the H2CO 6cm maser in IRAS18566+0408.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, ApJ (in press

    Molecular absorption lines toward star-forming regions : a comparative study of HCO+, HNC, HCN, and CN

    Aims. The comparative study of several molecular species at the origin of the gas phase chemistry in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) is a key input in unraveling the coupled chemical and dynamical evolution of the ISM. Methods. The lowest rotational lines of HCO+, HCN, HNC, and CN were observed at the IRAM-30m telescope in absorption against the \lambda 3 mm and \lambda 1.3 mm continuum emission of massive star-forming regions in the Galactic plane. The absorption lines probe the gas over kiloparsecs along these lines of sight. The excitation temperatures of HCO+ are inferred from the comparison of the absorptions in the two lowest transitions. The spectra of all molecular species on the same line of sight are decomposed into Gaussian velocity components. Most appear in all the spectra of a given line of sight. For each component, we derived the central opacity, the velocity dispersion, and computed the molecular column density. We compared our results to the predictions of UV-dominated chemical models of photodissociation regions (PDR models) and to those of non-equilibrium models in which the chemistry is driven by the dissipation of turbulent energy (TDR models). Results. The molecular column densities of all the velocity components span up to two orders of magnitude. Those of CN, HCN, and HNC are linearly correlated with each other with mean ratios N(HCN)/N(HNC) = 4.8 ±\pm 1.3 and N(CN)/N(HNC) = 34 ±\pm 12, and more loosely correlated with those of HCO+, N(HNC)/N(HCO+) = 0.5 ±\pm 0.3, N(HCN)/N(HCO+) = 1.9 ±\pm 0.9, and N(CN)/N(HCO+) = 18 ±\pm 9. These ratios are similar to those inferred from observations of high Galactic latitude lines of sight, suggesting that the gas sampled by absorption lines in the Galactic plane has the same chemical properties as that in the Solar neighbourhood. The FWHM of the Gaussian velocity components span the range 0.3 to 3 km s-1 and those of the HCO+ lines are found to be 30% broader than those of CN-bearing molecules. The PDR models fail to reproduce simultaneously the observed abundances of the CN-bearing species and HCO+, even for high-density material (100 cm-3 < nH < 104 cm-3). The TDR models, in turn, are able to reproduce the observed abundances and abundance ratios of all the analysed molecules for the moderate gas densities (30 cm-3 < nH < 200 cm-3) and the turbulent energy observed in the diffuse interstellar medium. Conclusions. Intermittent turbulent dissipation appears to be a promising driver of the gas phase chemistry of the diffuse and translucent gas throughout the Galaxy.     An X-ray view of 82 LINERs with Chandra and XMM-Newton data

    We present the results of an homogeneous X-ray analysis for 82 nearby LINERs selected from the catalogue of Carrillo et al. (1999). All sources have available Chandra (68 sources) and/or XMM-Newton (55 sources) observations. This is the largest sample of LINERs with X-ray spectral data (60 out of the 82 objects) and significantly improves our previous analysis based on Chandra data for 51 LINERs (Gonzalez-Martin et al. 2006). It increases both the sample size and adds XMM-Newton data. New models permit the inclusion of double absorbers in the spectral fits. Nuclear X-ray morphology is inferred from the compactness of detected nuclear sources in the hard band (4.5-8.0 keV). Sixty per cent of the sample shows a compact nuclear source and are classified as AGN candidates. The spectral analysis indicates that best fits involve a composite model: absorbed primary continuum and (2) soft spectrum below 2 keV described by an absorbed scatterer and/or a thermal component. The resulting median spectra parameters and their standard deviations are: G=2.11, =0.54 keV, =21.32 and =21.93. We complement our X-ray results with our analysis of HST optical images and literature data on emission lines, radio compactness and stellar population. Adding all these multiwavelength data, we conclude that evidence do exist supporting the AGN nature of their nuclear engine for 80% of the sample (66 out of 82 objects).Comment: Accepted for publications in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 49 pages, 12 figures.     Multidisciplinary management of head and neck cancer: First expert consensus using Delphi methodology from the Spanish Society for Head and Neck Cancer (part 2)

    Head and neck cancer is one of the most frequent malignances worldwide. Despite the site-specific multimodality therapy, up to half of the patients will develop recurrence. Treatment selection based on a multidisciplinary tumor board represents the cornerstone of head and neck cancer, as it is essential for achieving the best results, not only in terms of outcome, but also in terms of organ-function preservation and quality of life. Evidence-based international and national clinical practice guidelines for head and neck cancer not always provide answers in terms of decision-making that specialists have to deal with in their daily practice. This is the first Expert Consensus on the Multidisciplinary Approach for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) elaborated by the Spanish Society for Head and Neck Cancer and based on a Delphi methodology.     Oncogenic driver mutations predict outcome in a cohort of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients within a clinical trial

    234 diagnostic formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks from homogeneously treated patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) within a multicentre phase III clinical trial were characterised. The mutational spectrum was examined by next generation sequencing in the 26 most frequent oncogenic drivers in cancer and correlated with treatment response and survival. Human papillomavirus (HPV) status was measured by p16INK4a immunohistochemistry in oropharyngeal tumours. Clinicopathological features and response to treatment were measured and compared with the sequencing results. The results indicated TP53 as the most mutated gene in locally advanced HNSCC. HPV-positive oropharyngeal tumours were less mutated than HPV-negative tumours in TP53 (p < 0.01). Mutational and HPV status influences patient survival, being mutated or HPV-negative tumours associated with poor overall survival (p < 0.05). No association was found between mutations and clinicopathological features. This study confirmed and expanded previously published genomic characterization data in HNSCC. Survival analysis showed that non-mutated HNSCC tumours associated with better prognosis and lack of mutations can be identified as an important biomarker in HNSCC. Frequent alterations in PI3K pathway in HPV-positive HNSCC could define a promising pathway for pharmacological intervention in this group of tumours

    Problematic Internet Use in University Students: associated factors and differences of gender

    El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un análisis descriptivo del uso problemático de Internet en estudiantes universitarios, evaluando la posible asociación con problemas de salud y conductas adictivas, así como diferencias de género en los tipos utilización. Un total de 2780 alumnos participaron en el estudio entre los años 2011 – 2014, siendo un 29% varones (edad 20.8 ± 5.1 años) y un 71% mujeres (edad de 20.3 ± 4.4 años). La prevalencia de uso problemático de Internet evaluada mediante el Internet Addiction Test fue del 6.08%. Ser menor de 21 años y cursar titulaciones diferentes a ciencias de la salud fueron factores asociados a una mayor frecuencia de este problema, no existiendo diferencias en función del sexo o tipo de domicilio. Los resultados muestran una asociación significativa con algunos problemas de salud (migrañas, dolor lumbar, sobrepeso u obesidad, descanso insuficiente), aspectos psicológicos (riesgo de trastornos de la conducta alimentaria, riesgo de trastorno mental, depresión), problemas familiares y discriminación; no encontrándose asociaciones con consumo de sustancias adictivas (alcohol, tabaco o cannabis). Respecto al tiempo de uso de Internet, las horas de conexión semanales fueron significativamente mayores en las mujeres que en los hombres, tanto en el tiempo total como por motivos de ocio. El análisis del perfil de utilización en usuarios problemáticos reveló que los varones se relacionan más con aspectos de ocio como los juegos o las compras online y las mujeres con aspectos de socialización, como el chat o las redes sociales

    The submillimeter C and CO lines in Henize 2-10 and NGC 253

    The purpose of this paper is to describe a method for determining a cooling template for galaxies, using nearby galaxies, and applicable to future observations of distant galaxies. We observed two starburst galaxies (NGC 253 and Henize 2-10) with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in the rotational lines of carbon monoxide 12CO(J=3-2), (J=6-5) and (J=7-6) for both, and also 12CO(J=4-3) and 13CO(J=3-2) for Henize 2-10 and in the 3P2-3P1 fine-structure transitions of atomic carbon [CI] at 809 GHz for NGC 253. Some of these observations have been made previously, but the present multitransition study (including data found in the literature) is the most complete to date for the two galaxies. From these observations, we have derived the properties of the warm and dense molecular gas in the galaxy nuclei. We used an LTE analysis and an LVG radiative transfer model to determine physical conditions of the interstellar medium in both sources and predicted integrated line properties of all CO transitions up to 12CO(15-14). A PDR model has also been used and here the data are well fitted (within 20 %) by a model cloud with a gas density of n(H)= 8.0 +- 1.0 * 10E5 cm-3 and an incident FUV flux of chi = 20000 for Henize 2-10. For NGC 253, we deduced n(H) = 3.0 +- 0.5 * 10E5 cm-3 and chi = 20000 for the modelled cloud. The physical properties of warm gas and CO cooling curves of the target galaxies are compared with those measured for the nucleus of the Milky Way and the Cloverleaf QSO. The gas properties and CO cooling curve are similar for the two starburst galaxies and the Cloverleaf QSO while the Milky Way nucleus exhibits lower excitation molecular gas.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepte
