On the Problem of Measuring Happiness
The question of how to measure and aggregate happiness is more than a century old. In recent years, its relevance has risen due to efforts to replace the GDP with an index more indicative of well-being, though such efforts are fraught with serious conceptual problems. After briefly recalling these problems, we suggest to address them by using, instead of the common ordinal utility, an alternative quantity that is maximized in economic transactions. This quantity counts the number of future possibilities a commodity opens. The big advantage of this approach is that, in principle, the number of possibilities is an objective measure which allows for intra- and interpersonal comparison. We lay out the framework of the model and then discuss its relevance for social welfare. While we do here not explicitly compute a measure supplementing the GDP, we sketch how this could be done in practice
Performance of Tablet Splitters, Crushers, and Grinders in Relation to Personalised Medication with Tablets
Swallowing problems and the required dose adaptations needed to obtain optimal pharmacotherapy may be a hurdle in the use of tablets in daily clinical practice. Tablet splitting, crushing, or grinding is often applied to personalise medication, especially for the elderly and children. In this study, the performance of different types of (commercially available) devices was studied. Included were splitters, screwcap crushers, manual grinders, and electric grinders. Unscored tablets without active ingredient were prepared, with a diameter of 9 and 13 mm and a hardness of 100–220 N. Tablets were split into two parts and the difference in weight was measured. The time needed to pulverise the tablets (crush time) was recorded. The residue remaining in the device (loss) was measured. The powder was sieved to obtain a particle fraction >600 µm and <600 µm. The median particle size and particle size distribution of the later fraction were determined using laser diffraction analysis. Splitting tablets into two equal parts appeared to be difficult with the devices tested. Most screwcap grinders yielded a coarse powder containing larger chunks. Manual and especially electric grinders produced a finer powder, making it suitable for administration via an enteral feeding tube as well as for use in individualised preparations such as capsules. In conclusion, for domestic and incidental use, a screwcap crusher may provide sufficient size reduction, while for the more demanding regular use in hospitals and nursing residences, a manual or electric grinder is preferred
Cosmology at Low Frequencies: The 21 cm Transition and the High-Redshift Universe
Observations of the high-redshift Universe with the 21 cm hyperfine line of
neutral hydrogen promise to open an entirely new window onto the early phases
of cosmic structure formation. Here we review the physics of the 21 cm
transition, focusing on processes relevant at high redshifts, and describe the
insights to be gained from such observations. These include measuring the
matter power spectrum at z~50, observing the formation of the cosmic web and
the first luminous sources, and mapping the reionization of the intergalactic
medium. The epoch of reionization is of particular interest, because large HII
regions will seed substantial fluctuations in the 21 cm background. We also
discuss the experimental challenges involved in detecting this signal, with an
emphasis on the Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. These increase rapidly
toward low frequencies and are especially severe for the highest redshift
applications. Assuming that these difficulties can be overcome, the redshifted
21 cm line will offer unique insight into the high-redshift Universe,
complementing other probes but providing the only direct, three-dimensional

Long-term disease burden and survivorship issues after surgery and radiotherapy of intracranial meningioma patients
BACKGROUND
Many intracranial meningioma patients have an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and neurocognitive functioning up to 4 yr after intervention.
OBJECTIVE
To assess the long-term (≥5 yr) disease burden of meningioma patients.
METHODS
In this multicenter cross-sectional study, patients ≥5 yr after intervention (including active magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) surveillance) were included and assessed for HRQoL (Short-Form Health Survey 36), neurocognitive functioning (neuropsychological assessment), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and work productivity (Short Form-Health and Labour Questionnaire). Multivariable and propensity score regression analyses were used to compare patients and controls, and different treatment strategies corrected for possible confounders. Clinically relevant differences were reported.
RESULTS
At a median of 9 yr follow-up after intervention, meningioma patients (n = 190) reported more limitations due to physical (difference 12.5 points, P = .008) and emotional (13.3 points, P = .002) health problems compared with controls. Patients also had an increased risk to suffer from anxiety (odds ratio [OR]: 2.6, 95% CI: 1.2-5.7) and depression (OR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.3-10.5). Neurocognitive deficits were found in 43% of patients. Although postoperative complications, radiotherapy, and reresection were associated with worse verbal memory, attention, and executive functioning when compared to patients resected once, the only clinically relevant association was between reresection and worse attention (–2.11, 95% CI: –3.52 to –0.07). Patients of working age less often had a paid job (48%) compared with the working-age Dutch population (72%) and reported more obstacles at work compared with controls.
CONCLUSION
In the long term, a large proportion of meningioma patients have impaired HRQoL, neurocognitive deficits, and high levels of anxiety or depression. Patients treated with 1 resection have the best neurocognitive functioning
A probability-conserving cross-section biasing mechanism for variance reduction in Monte Carlo particle transport calculations
In Monte Carlo particle transport codes, it is often important to adjust
reaction cross sections to reduce the variance of calculations of relatively
rare events, in a technique known as non-analogous Monte Carlo. We present the
theory and sample code for a Geant4 process which allows the cross section of a
G4VDiscreteProcess to be scaled, while adjusting track weights so as to
mitigate the effects of altered primary beam depletion induced by the cross
section change. This makes it possible to increase the cross section of nuclear
reactions by factors exceeding 10^4 (in appropriate cases), without distorting
the results of energy deposition calculations or coincidence rates. The
procedure is also valid for bias factors less than unity, which is useful, for
example, in problems that involve computation of particle penetration deep into
a target, such as occurs in atmospheric showers or in shielding
Search for supersymmetric particles in scenarios with a gravitino LSP and stau NLSP
Sleptons, neutralinos and charginos were searched for in the context of
scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino. It was
assumed that the stau is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Data
collected with the DELPHI detector at a centre-of-mass energy near 189 GeV were
analysed combining the methods developed in previous searches at lower
energies. No evidence for the production of these supersymmetric particles was
found. Hence, limits were derived at 95% confidence level.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figure
Environmental noise reduces predation rate in an aquatic invertebrate
Noise is one of a wide range of disturbances associated with human activities that have been shown to have detrimental impacts on a wide range of species, from montane regions to the deep marine environment. Noise may also have community-level impacts via predator–prey interactions, thus jeopardising the stability of trophic networks. However, the impact of noise on freshwater ecosystems is largely unknown. Even more so is the case of insects, despite their crucial role in trophic networks. Here, we study the impact of underwater noise on the predatory functional response of damselfly larvae. We compared the feeding rates of larvae under anthropogenic noise, natural noise, and silent conditions. Our results suggest that underwater noise (pooling the effects of anthropogenic noise and natural noise) decreases the feeding rate of damselflies significantly compared to relatively silent conditions. In particular, natural noise increased the handling time significantly compared to the silent treatment, thus reducing the feeding rate. Unexpectedly, feeding rates under anthropogenic noise were not reduced significantly compared to silent conditions. This study suggests that noise per se may not necessarily have negative impacts on trophic interactions. Instead, the impact of noise on feeding rates may be explained by the presence of nonlinearities in acoustic signals, which may be more abundant in natural compared to anthropogenic noise. We conclude by highlighting the importance of studying a diversity of types of acoustic pollution, and encourage further work regarding trophic interactions with insects using a functional response approach
