    The main characteristics of the Iberian breed, an autochthonous pig breed of the Iberian Peninsula, are presented in this chapter along with the results of a literature review on productive traits. Reproductive performance was estimated by sow age at first parturition, litters per sow and year, piglets alive per litter, piglet weight at birth and at weaning, percentage of stillborn per litter, mortality at weaning, lactation length and farrowing interval. For growth performance, average daily gain and daily feed intake during lactation and in different growing phases are provided. Carcass traits were evaluated by age and weight at slaughter, hot carcass weight, carcass yield, backfat thickness measurements, muscle thickness and loin eye area. Meat quality traits of longissimus muscle (pH, objective colour measurements and intramuscular fat) were also assessed. The main part of the studies considered simulated practical production conditions in Iberian pig rearing although others evaluated a defined growing period, sometimes quite far from the usual commercial slaughter weight of this breed. Therefore, some figures should be interpreted with caution. Although a considerable number of studies on Iberian pig were included in the current review, scientific papers on reproductive performance and some meat quality parameters are still rather scarce

    Nitrate reduction capacity of the oral microbiota is impaired in periodontitis: potential implications for systemic nitric oxide availability

    The reduction of nitrate to nitrite by the oral microbiota has been proposed to be important for oral health and results in nitric oxide formation that can improve cardiometabolic conditions. Studies of bacterial composition in subgingival plaque suggest that nitrate-reducing bacteria are associated with periodontal health, but the impact of periodontitis on nitrate-reducing capacity (NRC) and, therefore, nitric oxide availability has not been evaluated. The current study aimed to evaluate how periodontitis affects the NRC of the oral microbiota. First, 16S rRNA sequencing data from five different countries were analyzed, revealing that nitrate-reducing bacteria were significantly lower in subgingival plaque of periodontitis patients compared with healthy individuals (P < 0.05 in all five datasets with n = 20–82 samples per dataset). Secondly, subgingival plaque, saliva, and plasma samples were obtained from 42 periodontitis patients before and after periodontal treatment. The oral NRC was determined in vitro by incubating saliva with 8 mmol/L nitrate (a concentration found in saliva after nitrate-rich vegetable intake) and compared with the NRC of 15 healthy individuals. Salivary NRC was found to be diminished in periodontal patients before treatment (P < 0.05) but recovered to healthy levels 90 days post-treatment. Additionally, the subgingival levels of nitrate-reducing bacteria increased after treatment and correlated negatively with periodontitis-associated bacteria (P < 0.01). No significant effect of periodontal treatment on the baseline saliva and plasma nitrate and nitrite levels was found, indicating that differences in the NRC may only be revealed after nitrate intake. Our results suggest that an impaired NRC in periodontitis could limit dietary nitrate-derived nitric oxide levels, and the effect on systemic health should be explored in future studies

    Plan estratégico del organismo de evaluación y fiscalización ambiental para la industria cervecera del Perú con enfoque en economía circular

    El sector cervecero en el Perú, se caracteriza por tener pocos participantes, un diversificado portafolio de marcas, altas barreras de entrada entre otros, pero además no está exenta de generar residuos y desperdicios que generan algún grado de contaminación. Por otro lado, el Organismo de Evaluación y Fiscalización Ambiental (OEFA), es la entidad pública especializada que busca la protección del medio ambiente en las diferentes actividades económicas. En razón a que el presente plan estratégico está enfocado en la Industria Cervecera Peruana, la visión que se plantea, es que El OEFA velará para que las actividades económicas de la Industria Cervecera en el 2025, sean un referente en el Perú en el uso de la economía circular, asegurando el derecho de las personas a gozar de un ambiente sano. Este plan estratégico plantea objetivos a largo plazo que están orientadas al cuidado del medio ambiente pero además, a reducir los desperdicios generados, logrando la creación de nuevos productos derivados, como ya se hace en otros países, mediante la utilización de los residuos de la producción de la cerveza, que en algunos casos pueden ser incorporados en el proceso productivo. Esto representa una gran oportunidad de generar nuevos negocios y para ello se requiere un marco regulatorio del OEFA. A partir de estos objetivos se plantean estrategias específicas, las cuales con la debida implementación y seguimiento, por parte de todos los actores que forman parte del sector así como del OEFA en su labor promotora y reguladora, permitirán armonizar el ejercicio de las actividades económicas y la protección del ambiente.Beer industry in Peru is known for having a reduce amount of participants, a diverse assortment of brands and high requirements in order to participate in. However, the industry is not blameless with regard to industrial waste and pollution. Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) is the public entity that specializes in the evaluation, supervision, and regulations that oversee environmental protection within the various economic enterprises. A proposal by the OEFA outlines the close supervision of the business practices of the Beer Industry in 2025. One of the strategies OEFA asserts in this proposal is the use of the circular economy thereby further guaranteeing the right of the people to enjoy a healthy environment. This strategic plan proposes long-term environmental protection objectives and an optimization of waste management, creating new products by recycling the waste from beer production. With this new window of opportunities for business, a regulatory outline is required from the OEFA. If the specific strategies proposed are properly implemented and each participant follows ethical business practices, then a true balance between the economy and environment will be found.Tesi

    Variable frequency of LRRK2 variants in the Latin American research consortium on the genetics of Parkinson's disease (LARGE-PD), a case of ancestry

    ABSTARCT: Mutations in Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2), primarily located in codons G2019 and R1441, represent the most common genetic cause of Parkinson's disease in European-derived populations. However, little is known about the frequency of these mutations in Latin American populations. In addition, a prior study suggested that a LRRK2 polymorphism (p.Q1111H) specific to Latino and Amerindian populations might be a risk factor for Parkinson's disease, but this finding requires replication. We screened 1734 Parkinson's disease patients and 1097 controls enrolled in the Latin American Research Consortium on the Genetics of Parkinson's disease (LARGE-PD), which includes sites in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay. Genotypes were determined by TaqMan assay (p.G2019S and p.Q1111H) or by sequencing of exon 31 (p.R1441C/G/H/S). Admixture proportion was determined using a panel of 29 ancestry informative markers. We identified a total of 29 Parkinson's disease patients (1.7%) who carried p.G2019S and the frequency ranged from 0.2% in Peru to 4.2% in Uruguay. Only two Parkinson's disease patients carried p.R1441G and one patient carried p.R1441C. There was no significant difference in the frequency of p.Q1111H in patients (3.8%) compared to controls (3.1%; OR 1.02, p = 0.873). The frequency of LRRK2-p.G2019S varied greatly between different Latin American countries and was directly correlated with the amount of European ancestry observed. p.R1441G is rare in Latin America despite the large genetic contribution made by settlers from Spain, where the mutation is relatively common

    Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks

    TesisEsta investigación es un estudio correlacional, cuya objetivo fue conocer si existe relación significativa entre Satisfacción laboral y Engagement (Compromiso); empleándose para ello la Escala de SL-SP de Sonia Palma y el cuestionario de Engagement (UWES) de Hallberg Ulrika Los resultados se obtuvieron de una muestra de 100 trabajadores de una empresa distribuidora de materiales eléctricos y ferreteros, los cuales arrojaron lo siguiente: existe niveles altos de satisfacción laboral; sin embargo en cuanto a Engagement revelan niveles en el rango medio. Con estos resultados la Empresa Distribuidora de materiales Ferreteros y Eléctricos, va a tener conocimiento de sus debilidades, en cuanto a la política y gestión laboral que viene implementando, para adoptar las acciones correctivas o de mejoramiento, que coadyuven a lograr los objetivos de la empres
