    A study of self-perceived current and desired career stages of federal government engineers and public school educators in the central florida area

    This study investigated the perceptions of public school educators and Federal Government engineers in the Central Florida area to determine their self-perceived current and desired career stages (Dalton, Thompson and Price, 1977). The influences of age, education and tenure variables on these perceptions and on the employee\u27s preference for a technical or managerial career track were also examined. The rationale for the study is based upon findings in the literature which indicate that both occupations are experiencing motivation and retention problems caused by the requirement to leave classrooms or technical engineering positions and enter management ranks in order to gain promotions. Questionnaires were used to collect information on the four career stages (apprentice, colleague, mentor, sponsor), demographic data and career track preferences. The data indicated that a higher percentage of engineers than educators perceived that they work in apprentice and mentor positions in their organizations. Engineers reported a desire to ultimately achieve a mentor position while educators aspired to be colleagues. Older engineers perceived themselves as mentors while educators as a group perceived themselves as colleagues regardless of age. Analyzed by tenure, engineers with 15 or more years experience perceived themselves in a mentor position. Educators perceived themselves as colleagues regardless of their experience after 5 years. Engineers holding a bachelor\u27s or master\u27s degree perceived themselves as working in and desiring higher career stages than did educators with those same credentials. Both educators and engineers who perceived themselves as working in an apprentice or colleague position indicated a preference for a technical career track. Those who perceived themselves as working in a mentor or sponsor position indicated a preference for a managerial career track. It was recommended that additional research on career stages be undertaken in other occupations to determine if similarities exist and that practioners begin to define and include current and desired career stage perceptions in personnel profiles to permit more effective training development and succession planning

    APPLE PRODUCTION, VOLE CONTROL, AND WILD TURKEYS: FINDING A BALANCE IN VERMONT

    Meadow voles (Crotus pennsylvanicus) and pine voles (Crotus inetorum) cause extensive damage to apple trees by gnawing and girdling trunk and root systems. In 1991, approximately 70% of Vermont\u27s 90 commercial apple producers were using zinc phosphide (ZP) treated cracked corn to manage vole damage. From November 1991 throughout January 1992, 36 confirmed wild turkey deaths were attributed to the broadcast application of ZP treated cracked coin in Vermont orchards. As a result of public concern regarding impacts to nontarget wild turkeys, a working group was formed with representation of various state and federal agencies as well as the apple industry to address this issue and review current vole damage management strategies. Since 1992, statewide voluntary compliance with working group recommendations that included shifting to ZP treated rolled oats have reduced the risk of wild turkey exposure to ZP. In this paper we discuss the effectiveness of the working group recommendations as measured by a mail survey of apple producers as well as a preliminary 4-year analysis of statewide rodenticide sales

    The Effect of Static Stretching on Proprioception, Pennation Angle, and Muscle Power Production

    With widespread use of pre-exercise stretching methods across sport and exercise, recent studies have questioned the effectiveness of such methods (Kay & Blazevich 2012; Cramer et al., 2005; Curry, Chengkalath, Crouch, Romance, & Manns, 2009). The purpose of this study was to examine how the relationship between pennation angle, proprioception, and muscle power are influenced by a static stretching protocol. Participants (n = 17) from a southeastern university in the United States consented to participate and were divided into an experimental group (n = 12) and control group (n = 5). The experimental group engaged in static stretched by placing the right foot on an incline board and maximally dorsiflexing the ankle joint while keeping the bottom of their foot flush with the board’s surface and the knee fully extended. The control group remained seated for the same amount of time and did not engage in stretching. Both groups were measured for vertical jump using the Vertec force plate, electrical activity of the gastrocnemius via the Terason ultrasound machine, and proprioception of the ankle joint via the Biodex 2 dynamometer pre- and post- stretching and control protocols. Results indicated that static stretching resulted in a decrease in muscle power without change of proprioception or electrical-mechanical delay while accompanied by an increase in pennation angle. The increase in pennation angle may the reason why static stretch resulted in a reduction in muscle power. The results are discussed in regard to previous research and future practical application

    Evaluation of Competence of Medical Students in Performing Direct Ophthalmoscopy

    Aim: The aim was to determine the competence of medical students in performing direct ophthalmoscopy. Materials and Methods: It was a cross‑sectional study whereby year 5 medical students were assessed during Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE) at the end of 4 weeks clinical rotation in ophthalmology. Every student had 5 min in each OSCE station, including the station for direct ophthalmoscopy. The correctness or otherwise of students’ quantitative assessment of cup‑disc ratio (CDR) was analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS, USA) version 20.0. Result: A total of 96 students were assessed in 6 groups over a 6 months period; age range was 20–33 years and a mean age of 24.8 ± 3.2. There were 57 males and 39 females (M:F = 1:0.25). Seventy‑eight (81.3%) were satisfied with teachings and tutorials on direct ophthalmoscopy. Eighty‑nine (92.7%) admitted visualizing the disc in the course of tutelage while 7 (7.3%) had never seen the disc with the direct ophthalmoscope. The retinal vessels were seen with the ophthalmoscope by 93 (96.9%). Direct Ophthalmoscopy was not considered to be difficult by 87(90.6%). Forty‑six (47.9%) got CDR correct on the right eyes while 50 (52.1%) got it correct on the left eyes. There was statistically significant relationship between the group students belonged and performance with 2 = <0.001.     A finite field method for calculating molecular polarizability tensors for arbitrary multipole rank

    A finite field method for calculating spherical tensor molecular polarizability tensors αlm;l′m′ = ∂Δlm/∂ϕl′m′* by numerical derivatives of induced molecular multipole Δlm with respect to gradients of electrostatic potential ϕl′m′* is described for arbitrary multipole ranks l and l′. Inter-conversion formulae for transforming multipole moments and polarizability tensors between spherical and traceless Cartesian tensor conventions are derived. As an example, molecular polarizability tensors up to the hexadecapole-hexadecapole level are calculated for water at the HF, B3LYP, MP2, and CCSD levels. In addition, inter-molecular electrostatic and polarization energies calculated by molecular multipoles and polarizability tensors are compared to ab initio reference values calculated by the Reduced Variation Space (RVS) method for several randomly oriented small molecule dimers separated by a large distance. It is discussed how higher order molecular polarizability tensors can be used as a tool for testing and developing new polarization models for future force fields

    Atomic forces for geometry-dependent point multipole and Gaussian multipole models

    In standard treatments of atomic multipole models, interaction energies, total molecular forces, and total molecular torques are given for multipolar interactions between rigid molecules. However, if the molecules are assumed to be flexible, two additional multipolar atomic forces arise due to 1) the transfer of torque between neighboring atoms, and 2) the dependence of multipole moment on internal geometry (bond lengths, bond angles, etc.) for geometry-dependent multipole models. In the current study, atomic force expressions for geometry-dependent multipoles are presented for use in simulations of flexible molecules. The atomic forces are derived by first proposing a new general expression for Wigner function derivatives ∂Dlm′m/∂Ω. The force equations can be applied to electrostatic models based on atomic point multipoles or Gaussian multipole charge density. Hydrogen bonded dimers are used to test the inter-molecular electrostatic energies and atomic forces calculated by geometry-dependent multipoles fit to the ab initio electrostatic potential (ESP). The electrostatic energies and forces are compared to their reference ab initio values. It is shown that both static and geometry-dependent multipole models are able to reproduce total molecular forces and torques with respect to ab initio, while geometry-dependent multipoles are needed to reproduce ab initio atomic forces. The expressions for atomic force can be used in simulations of flexible molecules with atomic multipoles. In addition, the results presented in this work should lead to further development of next generation force fields composed of geometry-dependent multipole models
