    Marketing Channel Choice Decisions of Agricultural Producers using the Transaction Cost Approach: A Review

    In the context of the development of policies and programs to improve the lives of farmers, there is a growing recognition in identifying transaction cost as a policy base for the development of agribusiness. This paper reviewed studies about the associated transaction costs incurred in relation to the distribution and channel management of agricultural produce, particularly on the decision to directly sell to the market, to enter into an agreement with an intermediary, and to become a member in a marketing cooperative. Common themes regarding the marketing channel choice decisions identified in the different studies are the following: (1) farmers who have knowledge about the price of the good in the market are more inclined to sell directly to the market; (2) farmers who trust intermediaries and the workers of marketing cooperatives are more inclined to sell their produce through intermediaries and marketing cooperatives; (3) farmers perceived an increase in their bargaining power and income risk; and (4) institutional arrangements with intermediaries and credit cooperatives require trust and proper implementation of contracts in order for such arrangements to be sustainable. Such common themes reveal that transaction costs are significant in the decision-making process of farmers in the marketing of their produce. Interventions should be undertaken in order to ensure the proper implementation of such arrangements and prevention of abuse of intermediaries and workers of marketing cooperatives

    Aquaponics is a significant wastewater treatment system which refers to the combination of conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic organism) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. This system has a high ability in removing nutrients compared to conventional methods because it is a natural and environmentally friendly system (aquaponics). The current chapter aimed to review the possible application of aquaponics system to treat fresh market wastewater with the intention to highlight the mechanism of phytoremediation occurs in aquaponic system. In the last century, some researchers and clinician have noticed that the psychosocial and neurocognitive functioning of patients with malignant gliomas can be impaired. Many clinical studies have demonstrated that part of patients, adults or children, diagnosed with glioblastoma will suffer from cognitive deficiency during their clinical course, especially in long-term survivors. Many nanoparticles (NPs) can inhibit the biological functions of tumours by modulating tumour-associated inflammation, which provokes angiogenesis and tumour growth. As one of the best antiviral nanoparticles (AVNPs), AVNP2 is the 2nd generation of AVNP2 that have been conjugated to graphite-graphene for improving physiochemical performance and reducing toxicity. AVNP2 inactivates viruses, such as the H1N1 and H5N1influenza viruses and even the SARS coronavirus, while it inhibits bacteria, such as MRSA and E. coli. As antimicrobials, nanoparticles are considered to be one of the vectors for the administration of therapeutic compounds. Yet, little is known about their potential functionalities and toxicities to the neurotoxic effects of cancer. Herein, we explored the functionality of AVNP2 on inhibiting C6 in glioma-bearing rats. The novel object-recognition test and open-field test showed that AVNP2 significantly improved the neuro-behaviour affected by C6 glioma. AVNP2 also alleviated the decline of long-term potentiation (LTP) and the decreased density of dendritic spines in the CA1 region induced by C6. Western blot assay and immunofluorescence staining showed that the expressions of synaptic-related proteins (PSD-95 and SYP) were increased, and these findings were in accordance with the results mentioned above. It revealed that the sizes of tumours in C6 glioma-bearing rats were smaller after treatment with AVNP2. The decreased expression of inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) by Western blotting assay and ELISA, angiogenesis protein (VEGF) by Western blotting assay and other related proteins (BDNF, NF-ĸB, iNOS and COX-2) by Western blotting assay in peri-tumour tissue indicated that AVNP2 could control tumour-associated inflammation, thus efficiently ameliorating the local inflammatory condition and, to some extent, inhibiting angiogenesis in C6-bearing rats. In conclusion, our results suggested that AVNP2 could have an effect on the peri-tumor environment, obviously restraining the growth progress of gliomas, and eventually improving cognitive levels in C6-bearing rats.Peer reviewedProo

    We report on a de novo centric fission of chromosome 11 in a healthy female referred for chromosome analysis due to recurrent miscarriages. Both fission products were mitotically stable. This centric fission of chromosome 11 appears to have no clinical significance for this patient other than recurrent miscarriages

    "You Obviously Just Have to Put on a Brave Face": A Qualitative Study of the Experiences and Coping Styles of Men With Rheumatoid Arthritis.

    OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences, coping styles, and support preferences of male rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. METHODS: Six focus groups comprised 22 men with RA. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three overarching themes describe the experiences, coping styles, and support preferences of men with RA. In "challenges to masculinity," the men described a "reduction in strength and abilities," which can lead to loss of independence, "challenges to masculine identity and role," and "loss of power and control." Coping by "getting through life with RA" meant dealing with RA by "just getting on with it," "information seeking," engaging in "destructive behaviors," and "withdrawing socially." Preferred "sources of support" tended not to include friends, as they were perceived to lack understanding or support. For acceptable support the men reported a preference for information-giving sessions rather than a discussion group, but there was no agreement on whether these should be mixed-sex or men only, or who should run the sessions. CONCLUSION: Male patients reported a range of coping styles and support preferences to address their experiences of living with RA, many of which may not be shared with women. Further research is needed to investigate whether these findings exist in a larger sample and whether the support preferences of men with RA are broadly different from those of women with RA to decide whether there is a clinical need to design a service for the potentially different needs of men

    Evaluation of determinants of walking fitness in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation

    ABSTRACT Aim: This study aims to investigate the ability of patients’ baseline characteristics to predict the distance walked during the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) population and to produce reference values to guide practice. Methods: Secondary analysis was conducted on National Audit Cardiac Rehabilitation data collected between 2010 and 2015. Patients (n=8863) were included if they were aged 18 years and had a recorded ISWT score assessed before starting CR. Stepwise regression was used to identify factors predicting the ISWT distance. Age, gender, body mass index, height, weight; presence of hypertension, dyslipidemia or diabetes; smoking and physical activity were independent variables. ISWT distance was the dependent variable. The 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles of the ISWT distance were used as reference values. Results: Age and gender explained 27% of the variance of the distance covered in the ISWT (R2 =0.27, adjusted R2 =0.27,Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE) = 148.7, p<0.001). Reference values using age and gender categories were developed. Conclusion: Age and gender were the significant factors for predicting the walking fitness in the CR population, with age being the best predictor. The age and gender reference values produced represent a potentially valuable tool to be used in the clinical setting

    Quadrupole Anisotropy in Dihadron Azimuthal Correlations in Central dd++Au Collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

    The PHENIX collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) reports measurements of azimuthal dihadron correlations near midrapidity in dd++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. These measurements complement recent analyses by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) involving central pp++Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=5.02 TeV, which have indicated strong anisotropic long-range correlations in angular distributions of hadron pairs. The origin of these anisotropies is currently unknown. Various competing explanations include parton saturation and hydrodynamic flow. We observe qualitatively similar, but larger, anisotropies in dd++Au collisions compared to those seen in pp++Pb collisions at the LHC. The larger extracted v2v_2 values in dd++Au collisions at RHIC are consistent with expectations from hydrodynamic calculations owing to the larger expected initial-state eccentricity compared with that from pp++Pb collisions. When both are divided by an estimate of the initial-state eccentricity the scaled anisotropies follow a common trend with multiplicity that may extend to heavy ion data at RHIC and the LHC, where the anisotropies are widely thought to arise from hydrodynamic flow.Comment: 375 authors, 7 pages, 5 figures.
