Generating asymptotically plane wave spacetimes
In an attempt to study asymptotically plane wave spacetimes which admit an
event horizon, we find solutions to vacuum Einstein's equations in arbitrary
dimension which have a globally null Killing field and rotational symmetry. We
show that while such solutions can be deformed to include ones which are
asymptotically plane wave, they do not posses a regular event horizon. If we
allow for additional matter, such as in supergravity theories, we show that it
is possible to have extremal solutions with globally null Killing field, a
regular horizon, and which, in addition, are asymptotically plane wave. In
particular, we deform the extremal M2-brane solution in 11-dimensional
supergravity so that it behaves asymptotically as a 10-dimensional vacuum plane
wave times a real line.Comment: 23 pages, 1 eps figure; harvmac; v2:refs added; v3:minor comments

The S-matrix of the Faddeev-Reshetikhin Model, Diagonalizability and PT Symmetry
We study the question of diagonalizability of the Hamiltonian for the
Faddeev-Reshetikhin (FR) model in the two particle sector. Although the two
particle S-matrix element for the FR model, which may be relevant for the
quantization of strings on , has been calculated recently
using field theoretic methods, we find that the Hamiltonian for the system in
this sector is not diagonalizable. We trace the difficulty to the fact that the
interaction term in the Hamiltonian violating Lorentz invariance leads to
discontinuity conditions (matching conditions) that cannot be satisfied. We
determine the most general quartic interaction Hamiltonian that can be
diagonalized. This includes the bosonic Thirring model as well as the bosonic
chiral Gross-Neveu model which we find share the same S-matrix. We explain this
by showing, through a Fierz transformation, that these two models are in fact
equivalent. In addition, we find a general quartic interaction Hamiltonian,
violating Lorentz invariance, that can be diagonalized with the same two
particle S-matrix element as calculated by Klose and Zarembo for the FR model.
This family of generalized interaction Hamiltonians is not Hermitian, but is
symmetric. We show that the wave functions for this system are also
symmetric. Thus, the theory is in a unbroken phase which guarantees the
reality of the energy spectrum as well as the unitarity of the S-matrix.Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure; references added, version published in JHE
Stable two-dimensional solitary pulses in linearly coupled dissipative Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations
A two-dimensional (2D) generalization of the stabilized Kuramoto -
Sivashinsky (KS) system is presented. It is based on the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili
(KP) equation including dissipation of the generic (Newell -- Whitehead --
Segel, NWS) type and gain. The system directly applies to the description of
gravity-capillary waves on the surface of a liquid layer flowing down an
inclined plane, with a surfactant diffusing along the layer's surface.
Actually, the model is quite general, offering a simple way to stabilize
nonlinear waves in media combining the weakly-2D dispersion of the KP type with
gain and NWS dissipation. Parallel to this, another model is introduced, whose
dissipative terms are isotropic, rather than of the NWS type. Both models
include an additional linear equation of the advection-diffusion type, linearly
coupled to the main KP-NWS equation. The extra equation provides for stability
of the zero background in the system, opening a way to the existence of stable
localized pulses. The consideration is focused on the case when the dispersive
part of the system of the KP-I type, admitting the existence of 2D localized
pulses. Treating the dissipation and gain as small perturbations and making use
of the balance equation for the field momentum, we find that the equilibrium
between the gain and losses may select two 2D solitons, from their continuous
family existing in the conservative counterpart of the model (the latter family
is found in an exact analytical form). The selected soliton with the larger
amplitude is expected to be stable. Direct simulations completely corroborate
the analytical predictions.Comment: a latex text file and 16 eps files with figures; Physical Review E,

Dissipative collisions in O + Al at E=116 MeV
The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (3Z7) emitted in
the reaction O + Al at 116 MeV have been measured in
the angular range = 15 - 115. A non-linear
optimisation procedure using multiple Gaussian distribution functions has been
proposed to extract the fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the
fragment emission from the experimental data. The angular distributions of the
fragments, thus obtained, from the deep inelastic component are found to fall
off faster than those from the fusion-fission component, indicating shorter
life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. The life times of the
intermediate di-nuclear configurations have been estimated using a diffractive
Regge-pole model. The life times thus extracted (
Sec.) are found to decrease with the increase in the fragment charge. Optimum
Q-values are also found to increase with increasing charge transfer i.e. with
the decrease in fragment charge.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Linking Backlund and Monodromy Charges for Strings on AdS_5 x S^5
We find an explicit relation between the two known ways of generating an
infinite set of local conserved charges for the string sigma model on AdS_5 x
S^5: the Backlund and monodromy approaches. We start by constructing the
two-parameter family of Backlund transformations for the string with an
arbitrary world-sheet metric. We then show that only for a special value of one
of the parameters the solutions generated by this transformation are compatible
with the Virasoro constraints. By solving the Backlund equations in a
non-perturbative fashion, we finally show that the generating functional of the
Backlund conservation laws is equal to a certain sum of the quasi-momenta. The
positions of the quasi-momenta in the complex spectral plane are uniquely
determined by the real parameter of the Backlund transform.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
On the covariant quantization of tensionless bosonic strings in AdS spacetime
The covariant quantization of the tensionless free bosonic (open and closed)
strings in AdS spaces is obtained. This is done by representing the AdS space
as an hyperboloid in a flat auxiliary space and by studying the resulting
string constrained hamiltonian system in the tensionless limit. It turns out
that the constraint algebra simplifies in the tensionless case in such a way
that the closed BRST quantization can be formulated and the theory admits then
an explicit covariant quantization scheme. This holds for any value of the
dimension of the AdS space.Comment: 1+16 pages; v4 two clarifications adde
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
