ABSTRACT. Mood state’s changes and quality of life’s perception in people affected with stroke. Objective: This study aims to verify the mood states (before and after) of the person who suffered the stroke and his perception about factors that influence person’s quality of life after the stroke event. Methods: Subjects of this study, volunteering themselves, both sexes, aged over 57 years and suffering from stroke for more than 6 months participated in the study. Participants answered 3 instruments: (1) sociodemographic questionnaire, (2) Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) and (3) Abbreviated Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-bref). BRUMS Scale was answered twice, in order to compare the mood perceived before and after the stroke event. Descriptive analyzes were undertaken in the present study. Results: In the set of results, the majority of the participants showed a change in the mood state, with the majority of participants having an increase into negative dimension scores. In addition, about quality of life after stroke, most participants report themselves the importance of the psychological domain to improve quality of life and physical activity and rehabilitation as important positive factors. Conclusions: It can be concluded that stroke has a great influence on people’s mood states swings. Although, after stroke, those affected for the accident have a tendency to increase their levels of sadness and depression. However, it is observed that after stroke, those affected tend to think more about their quality of life and to pursuit lifestyle changes, in order to achieve a more active and healthy lifestyle

A compendium and functional characterization of mammalian genes involved in adaptation to Arctic or Antarctic environments

    Get PDF
Many mammals are well adapted to surviving in extremely cold environments. These species have likely accumulated genetic changes that help them efficiently cope with low temperatures. It is not known whether the same genes related to cold adaptation in one species would be under selection in another species. The aims of this study therefore were: to create a compendium of mammalian genes related to adaptations to a low temperature environment; to identify genes related to cold tolerance that have been subjected to independent positive selection in several species; to determine promising candidate genes/pathways/organs for further empirical research on cold adaptation in mammals

We report the first reconstruction in hadron collisions of the suppressed decays B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)K^- and B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)pi^-, sensitive to the CKM phase gamma, using data from 7 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. We reconstruct a signal for the B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)K^- suppressed mode with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, and measure the ratios of the suppressed to favored branching fractions R(K) = [22.0 \pm 8.6(stat)\pm 2.6(syst)]\times 10^-3, R^+(K) = [42.6\pm 13.7(stat)\pm 2.8(syst)]\times 10^-3, R^-(K)= [3.8\pm 10.3(stat)\pm 2.7(syst]\times 10^-3, as well as the direct CP-violating asymmetry A(K) = -0.82\pm 0.44(stat)\pm 0.09(syst) of this mode. Corresponding quantities for B^- -> D(-> K^+ pi^-)pi^- decay are also reported.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted by Phys.Rev.D Rapid Communications for Publicatio

Compressed representation of a partially defined integer function over multiple arguments

In OLAP (OnLine Analitical Processing) data are analysed in an n-dimensional cube. The cube may be represented as a partially defined function over n arguments. Considering that often the function is not defined everywhere, we ask: is there a known way of representing the function or the points in which it is defined, in a more compact manner than the trivial one

Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

    Get PDF
The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum
