    The Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Data from SDSS-III

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) started a new phase in August 2008, with new instrumentation and new surveys focused on Galactic structure and chemical evolution, measurements of the baryon oscillation feature in the clustering of galaxies and the quasar Ly alpha forest, and a radial velocity search for planets around ~8000 stars. This paper describes the first data release of SDSS-III (and the eighth counting from the beginning of the SDSS). The release includes five-band imaging of roughly 5200 deg^2 in the Southern Galactic Cap, bringing the total footprint of the SDSS imaging to 14,555 deg^2, or over a third of the Celestial Sphere. All the imaging data have been reprocessed with an improved sky-subtraction algorithm and a final, self-consistent photometric recalibration and flat-field determination. This release also includes all data from the second phase of the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Evolution (SEGUE-2), consisting of spectroscopy of approximately 118,000 stars at both high and low Galactic latitudes. All the more than half a million stellar spectra obtained with the SDSS spectrograph have been reprocessed through an improved stellar parameters pipeline, which has better determination of metallicity for high metallicity stars.Comment: Astrophysical Journal Supplements, in press (minor updates from submitted version

    Section 3.5 of Aihara et al. (2011) described various sources of systematic error in the astrometry of the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In addition to these sources of error, there is an additional and more serious error, which introduces a large systematic shift in the astrometry over a large area around the north celestial pole. The region has irregular boundaries but in places extends as far south as declination δ ≈ 41◦. The sense of the shift is that the positions of all sources in the affected area are offset by roughly 250 mas in a northwest direction. We have updated the SDSS online documentation to reflect these errors, and to provide detailed quality information for each SDSS field

    SDSS-III: Massive Spectroscopic Surveys of the Distant Universe, the Milky Way Galaxy, and Extra-Solar Planetary Systems

    Building on the legacy of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I and II), SDSS-III is a program of four spectroscopic surveys on three scientific themes: dark energy and cosmological parameters, the history and structure of the Milky Way, and the population of giant planets around other stars. In keeping with SDSS tradition, SDSS-III will provide regular public releases of all its data, beginning with SDSS DR8 (which occurred in Jan 2011). This paper presents an overview of the four SDSS-III surveys. BOSS will measure redshifts of 1.5 million massive galaxies and Lya forest spectra of 150,000 quasars, using the BAO feature of large scale structure to obtain percent-level determinations of the distance scale and Hubble expansion rate at z<0.7 and at z~2.5. SEGUE-2, which is now completed, measured medium-resolution (R=1800) optical spectra of 118,000 stars in a variety of target categories, probing chemical evolution, stellar kinematics and substructure, and the mass profile of the dark matter halo from the solar neighborhood to distances of 100 kpc. APOGEE will obtain high-resolution (R~30,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N>100 per resolution element), H-band (1.51-1.70 micron) spectra of 10^5 evolved, late-type stars, measuring separate abundances for ~15 elements per star and creating the first high-precision spectroscopic survey of all Galactic stellar populations (bulge, bar, disks, halo) with a uniform set of stellar tracers and spectral diagnostics. MARVELS will monitor radial velocities of more than 8000 FGK stars with the sensitivity and cadence (10-40 m/s, ~24 visits per star) needed to detect giant planets with periods up to two years, providing an unprecedented data set for understanding the formation and dynamical evolution of giant planet systems.     Study of Asparagine 353 in Aminopeptidase A: Characterization of a Novel Motif (GXMEN) Implicated in Exopeptidase Specificity of Monozinc Aminopeptidases

    International audienceAminopeptidase A (EC 3.4.11.7, APA) is a 160 kDa membrane-bound zinc enzyme that contains the HEXXH consensus sequence found in members of the zinc metalloprotease family, the zincins. In addition, the monozinc aminopeptidases are characterized by another conserved motif, GXMEN, the glutamate residue of which has been shown to be implicated in the exopeptidase specificity of aminopeptidase A [Vazeux G. (1998) Biochem. J. 334, 407-413]. In carboxypeptidase A (EC 3.4.17.1, CPA), the exopeptidase specificity is conferred by an arginine residue (Arg-145) and an asparagine residue (Asn-144). Thus, we hypothesized that Asn-353 of the GXMEN motif in APA plays a similar role to Asn-144 in CPA and contributes to the exopeptidase specificity of APA. We investigated the functional role of Asn-353 in APA by substituting this residue with a glutamine (Gln-353), an alanine (Ala-353) or an aspartate (Asp-353) residue by site-directed mutagenesis. Expression of wild-type and mutated APAs revealed that Gln-353 and Ala-353 are similarly routed and glycosylated to the wild-type APA, whereas Asp-353 is trapped intracellularly and partially glycosylated. Kinetic studies, using alpha-L-glutamyl-beta-naphthylamide (GluNA) as a substrate showed that the K(m) values of the mutants Gln-353 and Ala-353 were increased 11- and 8-fold, respectively, whereas the k(cat) values were decreased (2-fold) resulting in a 24- and 14-fold reduction in cleavage efficiency. When alpha-L-aspartyl-beta-naphthylamide or angiotensin II were used as substrates, the mutations had a greater effect on k(cat), leading to a similar decrease in cleavage efficiencies as that observed with GluNA. We then measured the inhibitory potencies of several classes of inhibitors, glutamate thiol, glutamine thiol and two isomers (L- or D-) of glutamate phosphonate to explore the functional role of Asn-353. The data indicate that Asn-353 is critical for the integrity and catalytic activity of APA. This residue is involved in substrate binding via interactions with the free N-terminal part and with the P1 carboxylate side chain of the substrate. In conclusion, Asn-353 of the GXMEN motif, together with Glu-352, contributes to the exopeptidase specificity of APA and plays an equivalent role to Asn-144 in CPA

    Associations of the Levels of C4d-bearing Reticulocytes and High-avidity Anti-dsDNA Antibodies with Disease Activity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    9 páginasObjective There are no laboratory tools that detect early flares in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Our aim was to validate in our population the previous findings of the association of C4d-bearing reticulocytes (R-C4d) compared to anti-dsDNA antibodies, with disease activity assessed by the Safety of Estrogens in Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment–Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SELENA-SLEDAI) and the British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) 2004 scales. Methods All patients who met the 1987 American College of Rheumatology classification criteria and were seen consecutively in 2013 at a specialized SLE care clinic were included. Disease activity was established by the SELENA-SLEDAI and BILAG 2004. Anti-dsDNA and R-C4d were quantified in peripheral blood. Comparisons were made between values of active and inactive patients, and the correlations between the SELENA-SLEDAI and serum levels of anti-dsDNA and R-C4d were measured. Results Sixty-two patients (83.9% women) were included. A total of 32.3% had active disease according to the SELENA-SLEDAI. There was a significant statistical difference (p = 0.0001) in the distribution of R-C4d between disease activity groups. The correlation coefficient between R-C4d and the SELENA-SLEDAI score was rs = 0.738 (p = 0.0001). R-C4d differed between patients with and without activity in the BILAG 2004 constitutional, mucocutaneous, gastrointestinal, renal, and hematological domains. Conclusion R-C4d showed a higher correlation with SLE activity measured by the SELENA-SLEDAI and BILAG 2004 than anti-dsDNA did, suggesting a possible involvement in diagnosing disease activity. Prospective studies that confirm these findings and evaluate its involvement in followup are needed

    Metal Atom Clusters as Building Blocks for Multifunctional Proton-Conducting Materials: Theoretical and Experimental Characterization

    International audienceThe search for new multifunctional materials displaying proton-conducting properties is of paramount necessity for the development of electrochromic devices and supercapacitors as well as for energy conversion and storage. In the present study, proton conductivity is reported for the first time in three molybdenum cluster-based materials (H)[MoBrS(OH)]-12HO and (H)[MoX(OH)]-12HO (X = Cl, Br). We show that the self-assembling of the luminescent [MoL(OH)] cluster units leads to both luminescence and proton conductivity (σ = 1.4 × 10 S·cm in (H)[MoCl(OH)]-12HO under wet conditions) in the three materials. The latter property results from the strong hydrogen-bond network that develops between the clusters and the water molecules and is magnified by the presence of protons that are statistically shared by apical hydroxyl groups between adjacent clusters. Their role in the proton conduction is highlighted at the molecular scale by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations that demonstrate that concerted proton transfers through the hydrogen-bond network are possible. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis also shows the ability of the compounds to accommodate more or less water molecules, which highlights that vehicular (or diffusion) transport probably occurs within the materials. An infrared fingerprint of the mobile protons is finally proposed based on both theoretical and experimental proofs. The present study relies on a synergic computational/experimental approach that can be extended to other proton-conducting materials. It thus paves the way to the design and understanding of new multifunctional proton-conducting materials displaying original and exciting properties

    Structures and magnetic properties of MnIII 4LnIII4 aggregates with a “square-in-square” topology

    The structures and magnetic properties of a family of new octanuclear heterometallic 3d-4f complexes [MnIII 4LnIII4(m3-OH)4(m2,h1-X)4(O2CBut)8(t-bdea)4]·solv, where X = N3-, Ln = Y (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb(4), Dy (5), Ho (6); X = OCN-, Ln = Dy (7); X = NO3-, Ln = Gd (8), Tb (9), Dy (10), Ho (11), Er (12); solv = MeCN or toluene, are reported. The metal topology in the aggregates can be described as consisting of a “Ln4-square inscribed in a Mn4-square”. Complexes 1-7 are prepared by the reactions of t-butyldiethanolamine (t-bdeaH2) with a preformed hexanuclear manganese pivalate complex [Mn6], the respective lanthanide salt and either NaN3 or NaNCO, while 8-12 are obtained from the direct reaction of Mn(OAc)2, Ln(NO3)3·xH2O and t-butyldiethanolamine. The magnetic properties of all the complexes were investigated using variable temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements. Similar magnetic behaviour was observed for compounds containing the same lanthanide, indicating that changing the bridging ligand X does not have a significant effect on the magnetic behaviour. The TbIII and DyIII compounds 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 all show frequency-dependent ac susceptibilities indicative of a slow relaxation of magnetisation and are therefore considered as Single-Molecule Magnets

    Trends in human immunodeficiency virus diagnoses among men who have sex with men in North America, Western Europe, and Australia, 2000-2014

    Purpose: The aim of the article was to investigate recent trends in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) in high-income countries in North America, Western Europe, and Australia. Methods: Data on annual rates of HIV diagnoses among MSM aged 15 to 65 years from 2000 to 2014 were collected from 13 high-income countries. Joinpoint regression software was used to empirically determine country-specific trend periods. Trends in HIV diagnosis rates and in the proportion of diagnoses occurring in young MSM aged 15 to 24 years were analyzed using Poisson regression and log-binomial regression, respectively. Results: Six countries experienced an increasing trend from 2000 to 2007-08 followed by either a stable or declining trend through 2014. Five countries had recently increasing trends, and two countries had one stable trend from 2000 to 2014. All 13 countries experienced increases in the proportion of diagnoses occurring in young MSM. Conclusions: Since 2008, half of the 13 high-income countries examined experienced stable or decreasing trends. Still, some countries continue to experience increasing HIV trends, and young MSM are increasingly represented among new diagnoses. Efforts to support early sexual health promotion, reduce barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis, and improve care engagement for young MSM are critical to addressing current HIV trends.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
