Phloem sap intricacy and interplay with aphid feeding

Aphididae feed upon the plant sieve elements (SE), where they ingest sugars, nitrogen compounds and other nutrients. For ingestion, aphid stylets penetrate SE, and because of the high hydrostatic pressure in SE, phloem sap exudes out into the stylets. Severing stylets to sample phloem exudates (i.e. stylectomy) has been used extensively for the study of phloem contents. Alternative sampling techniques are spontaneous exudation upon wounding that only works in a few plant species, and the popular EDTA-facilitated exudation technique. These approaches have allowed fundamental advances on the understanding of phloem sap composition and sieve tube physiology, which are surveyed in this review. A more complete picture of metabolites, ions, proteins and RNAs present in phloem sap is now available, which has provided large evidence for the phloem role as a signalling network in addition to its primary role in partitioning of photo-assimilates. Thus, phloem sap sampling methods can have remarkable applications to analyse plant nutrition, physiology and defence responses. Since aphid behaviour is suspected to be affected by phloem sap quality, attempts to manipulate phloem sap content were recently undertaken based on deregulation in mutant plants of genes controlling amino acid or sugar content of phloem sap. This opens up new strategies to control aphid settlement on a plant host

Parenting stress and resilience in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Southeast Asia: a systematic review

Background: This paper aimed to review the literature on the factors associated with parenting stress and resilience among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the South East Asia (SEA) region. Methods: An extensive search of articles in multiple online databases (PsycNET, ProQuest, PudMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) resulted in 28 papers that met the inclusion criteria (i.e., conducted in the SEA region, specific to ASD only, published in a peer-reviewed journal, full text in English). Studies found were conducted in the following countries: Brunei, n = 1; Indonesia, n = 2; Malaysia, n = 12; Philippines, n = 5; Singapore, n = 5, Thailand, n = 2; and Vietnam, n = 1, but none from Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, and Myanmar were identified. Results: Across the studies, six main factors were found to be associated with parenting stress: social support, severity of autism symptoms, financial difficulty, parents' perception and understanding toward ASD, parents' anxiety and worries about their child's future, and religious beliefs. These six factors could also be categorized as either a source of parenting stress or a coping strategy/resilience mechanism that may attenuate parenting stress. Conclusion: The findings suggest that greater support services in Western countries may underlie the cultural differences observed in the SEA region. Limitations in the current review were identified. The limited number of studies yielded from the search suggests a need for expanded research on ASD and parenting stress, coping, and resilience in the SEA region especially in Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, and Myanmar. The identified stress and resilience factors may serve as sociocultural markers for clinicians, psychologists, and other professionals to consider when supporting parents of children with ASD

Attitude towads psychological help-seeking: The role of mental health attriution

This multivariate survey research design intends to investigate the overall goodness of fit of the mental health attribution model with psychological help-seeking attitudes. Under the assumption that mental health causal beliefs and mental health control beliefs influence psychological helpseeking attitudes, this study examined the relationship of the different dimensions of mental health attribution and psychological help-seeking attitudes. The present study posited that mental health attribution significantly contribute to psychological help-seeking attitudes via mental health locus of causality, mental health causal stability, mental health causal globality, and mental health locus of control. Analyses indicated that mental health attribution accounted for 4% of the overall variance in attitude towards psychological help-seeking. Furthermore, mental health external locus of control was found to significantly contribute to the variance. The results suggest that mental health attribution may not be a good predictor of attitude towards psychological help-seeking

Background: Wound and wound dressing are part of nurses’ responsibilities. It seems though, as if the health care assistants perform the majority of wound dressings and documentation. There are many varieties of wounds and wound dressings, some are more complicated than others. Sometimes it might seem appropriate to pass on the assignment. Aim: To explore the relation between responsibility and delegation in connection with wound dressing from the nurses’ perspectives. Methods: A qualitative interview study was performed in which five nurses from a ward in the south of Sweden with different working experience participated. Content analysis was restricted to the manifest level to elicit the result. Results: The result was divided into three categories: responsibility, performance and control. Other tasks are highly prioritized over wound dressing even though nurses are aware of their responsibilities. Handing over the assignment to an experienced and knowledgeable person is nurses’ way of taking responsibility. The greatest experience and knowledge are ascribed to the health care assistants while the nurses and doctors have the responsibility. Task performance regarding wound care is described as division of work and rules are unclear. Communication plays an important role for safety, control and evaluation. Conclusions: There is no clear and formal delegation of wound dressing. Nurses have big responsibility regarding wound dressing yet it is often neglected. The fact that the health care assistants perform both wound dressing and some documentation is considered as a practical work division. Nurses are confident to hand over the assignment since trust and faith to the health care assistants exists. Teamwork and structure of work, however, results in unclear boundaries between professions

Abstract. The objective of the study is to determine the beliefs, values, and expectations an individual hold in relation to nonviolent interpersonal conflict resolution. The study aims to provide a framework on the psychological dynamics of nonviolent action. In-depth interview was employed in gathering data. Sixteen (16) participants were picked through non-probabilisitc convenient sampling technique. Phenomenological reduction was adapted to content analyze the data. Four important values were discovered. Maintenance of a harmonious relationship, societal norms, relational ties, and keeping oneself safe from danger are the four major values associated with nonviolence. In relation to this, four important beliefs proved to be associated with values. Respondents revealed that they believe conflict deteriorates relationship. They also believe that further aggravation of the conflict situation would lead to an adverse effect to oneself. Karma is another belief associated with nonviolent interpersonal conflict resolution. Finally, respondents claimed they believe that violence is disadvantageous for both parties. The results also revealed four chief expectancies of people in a nonviolent conflict resolution, which are de-escalation of conflict situation, maintain the relationship, opponent\u27s realization of his or her mistake, and the act of reconciliation
