From the Abstract to the Concrete: A Qualitative Study of Teachers' Methods for Facilitating Subject Language and Content within Social Studies
Experiences of contacts with diabetes care professionals among people with type 2 diabetes in an urban swedish setting
Background: High-quality diabetes care should offer personalized treatment and support self-management to reduce complications and maintain quality of life for affected persons. In Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city, primary care treated twice as many individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 2018 compared to 2011. As the prevalence of T2D increases, healthcare services face increasing challenges. Objective: To explore experiences of contacts with diabetes care professionals among people living with T2D who are accessing diabetes care in the city of Malmö. Method: A qualitative inductive design was employed, involving interviews with 21 persons with T2D receiving diabetes care at four primary healthcare centers in Malmö. A semi-structured interview guide was used. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Result: The theme ‘Seeking room for one’s agency’ emerged from two categories that illustrate experiences with diabetes care in relation to meeting healthcare needs: ‘Importance of connecting with diabetes care professionals’ and ‘Concerns in navigating diabetes care.’ Eight subcategories describe what contact with diabetes care meant for the participants. Conclusion: The findings highlight opportunities for improving diabetes care to better meet patients’ needs. Contacts with diabetes care professionals were perceived as supportive when there was a clear intention to adapt to individual needs and when expectations and communication were transparent. Continuity with general practitioners and educational aspects were identified as unmet healthcare needs. Based on the findings of this study, efforts to a systematic and broad implementation of group-based T2D-education in Malmö are recommended
Nurses´ Experiences of Compassion Fatigue in Oncological Care : A literature review
Background: Daily oncology nurses care for patients living with severe illness and suffering. This emotional burden increases the risk of compassion fatigue, which can affect both the nurses´ well-being and the quality of care. Despite the scope of the problem, knowledge remains limited regarding how nurses themselves experience compassion fatigue in their professional practice. Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate nurses´ experiences of compassion fatigue in oncology care. Method: A literature review was conducted based on ten qualitative scientific articles retrieved from PubMed and CINAHL. The articles were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify common themes regarding nurses´ experiences of compassion fatigue. Results: The findings showed that nurses working in oncology care experience compassion fatigue in connection with repeated encounters with suffering, death, and high workload. Three main themes were identified: 1) Demanding work environment and emotional strain, 2) Consequences for the nurse’s health and nursing care, and 3) Strategies and protective factors. Compassion fatigue manifested as psychological and somatic symptoms, emotional distancing, and impact on both private life and patient safety. Protective factors such as reflection, collegial support, supervision, and clear boundaries between work and private life were highlighted as important resources for managing compassion fatigue. Conclusion: Compassion fatigue is a widespread phenomenon among oncology nurses and can negatively affect both staff well-being and patient safety. It is important to recognize and prevent compassion fatigue through organizational and individual interventions to ensure a sustainable work environment and quality care
Standing next to but not being part of : relatives' experiences of support from healthcare professionals when general palliative care is provided at home
Background: Relatives play a crucial role when palliative care is provided at home. More advanced care at home places higher demands on relatives, taking great responsibility, facing challenges, and often lacking adequate knowledge and skills to provide care. Therefore, relatives need support from healthcare professionals, yet do not receive the needed support. This study aimed to elucidate relatives' experiences of support from healthcare professionals before and after a patient's death when general palliative care is provided at home. Methods: A phenomenological hermeneutical method was used. The inclusion criteria were relatives of people who had died, involved in general palliative care at home. The sample consisted of 14 adult relatives involved in general palliative care at home between one week and 12 months. Data were collected through individual interviews between January and May 2025. Results: Relatives needed to be seen as they felt left out; they felt an overwhelming responsibility; they needed to feel safe at home through guidance from and access to healthcare professionals; they felt the need to know what was happening and what to expect; and they needed help in processing the grief both before and after the patient's death. These themes formed the main theme: Standing next to but not being part of. Conclusions: The findings of this study showed a lack of support for relatives before and after the patient's death but offer insights into what support relatives need from HCPs when general PC is provided at home. Relatives need to feel seen, informed and prepared, to feel safe when care is provided at home, and not feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of the situation. As research continuously reveals that relatives have unmet support needs, this highlights the need for tailored interventions and the targeting of available support actions for improved support. Since relatives play a crucial role in palliative care at home, continued work with education and training for relatives should be prioritised to support them in feeling prepared, obtaining necessary caregiving knowledge and skills, enabling them to cope with the situation at home
Teachers’ Perspectives on Democracy Education in Sweden and the United States - A Comparison
This study explores how democracy is addressed as both a knowledge content and a pedagogical practice in the early years of schooling by analyzing how primary teachers in Sweden and the United States understand and describe their work with the school’s democratic mission. The study is based on a qualitative research approach and semi-structured interviews were conducted with four teachers, two in Sweden and two in the United States. The empirical material was analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted in relation to relevant democratic theories. The results show that teachers in both contexts emphasize the importance of fostering responsible and respectful citizens, although their approaches differ. Swedish teachers more often describe democracy as integrated into everyday classroom practice through student participation, dialogue and practical activities. In contrast, the American teachers tend to frame democracy primarily as subject content taught through planned thematic units focusing on government and societal structures. The results also indicate that value-based issues, controversial topics and expectations of teacher neutrality are perceived as challenges in both contexts. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how democracy education can take different forms depending on educational context and emphasizes the central role of teachers in enacting the democratic mission of schooling
Gender differences in reading
