Fluorescence measurement of chloride transport in monolayer cultured cells. Mechanisms of chloride transport in fibroblasts
The methodology has been developed to measure Cl activity and transport in cultured cells grown on a monolayer using the entrapped Cl-sensitive fluorophore 6-methoxy-N-[3-sulfopropyl] quinolinium (SPQ). The method was applied to a renal epithelial cell line, LLC-PKI, and a nonepithelial cell line, Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts. SPQ was nontoxic to cells when present for greater than h in the culture media. To load with SPQ (5 mM), cells were made transiently permeable by exposure to hypotonic buffer (150 mOsm, 4 min). Intracellular fluorescence was monitored continuously by epifluorescence microscopy using low illumination intensity at 360 +/- 5 nm excitation wavelength and photomultiplier detection at greater than 410 nm. Over 60min at 37 degrees C, there was no photobleaching and less than 10% leakage of SPQ out of cells; intracellular SPQ fluorescence was uniform. SPQ fluorescence was calibrated against intracellular [Cl] using high K solutions containing the ionophores nigericin and tributyltin. The Stern-Volmer constant (Kq) for quenching of intracellular SPQ by Cl was 13 M-1 for fibroblasts and LLC-PKl cells. In the absence of Cl, SPQ lifetime was 26 ns in aqueous solution and 3.7 +/- 0.6 ns in cells, showing that the lower Kq in cells than in free solution (Kq = 118 M-1) was due to SPQ quenching by intracellular anions. To examine Cl transport mechanisms, the time course of intracellular [Cl] was measured in response to rapid Cl addition and removal in the presence of ion or pH gradients. In fibroblasts, three distinct Cl transporting systems were identified: a stilbeneinhibitable Cl/HCO3 exchanger, a furosemide-sensitive Na/K/2Cl cotransporter, and a Ca-regulated Cl conductance. These results establish a direct optical method to measure intracellular [Cl] continuously in cultured cells
Global Symposium on Women in Fisheries
All over the world, women contribute in multiple ways to the production, processing, marketing and management of fish and other living aquatic resources. The first ever Global Symposium on Women in Fisheries, held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on 29 November 2001 generated the present collection of papers on women in fisheries. The reader of this volume will find in it a wealth of information, albeit in a very heterogeneous form, that the authors have had to draw from many different sources. Some are primary research studies whereas most are historical reviews from first hand experience of the authors or derived from other written materials, often contained in reports of fisheries development projects, newspapers and source materials well outside the fish sectors.Women, Participation, Sustainability, Poverty, Fisheries, Development projects, Fishery technology
Bi-Large Neutrino Mixing See-Saw Mass Matrix with Texture Zeros and Leptogenesis
We study constraints on neutrino properties from texture zeros in bi-large
mixing See-Saw mass matrix and also from leptogenesis. Texture zeros may occur
in the light (class a)) or in the heavy (class b)) neutrino mass matrices. Each
of these two classes has 5 different forms which can produce non-trivial three
generation mixing with at least one texture zero. We find that two types of
texture zero mass matrices in both class a) and class b) can be consistent with
present data on neutrino masses, mixing and produce the observed baryon
asymmetry of the universe. None of the neutrinos can have zero masses with the
lightest of the light neutrinos having a mass larger than about 0.039 eV for
class a) and 0.002 eV for class b). In these models although CKM CP violating
phase vanishes, non-zero Majorana phases, however, can exist and play an
important role in producing the observed baryon asymmetry in our universe
through leptogenesis mechanism. The requirement of producing the observed
baryon asymmetry can further distinguish different models and also restrict the
See-Saw scale to be in the range GeV.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures revised version, some references added, to be

Renormalization Group Running of Lepton Mixing Parameters in See-Saw Models with Flavor Symmetry
We study the renormalization group running of the tri-bimaximal mixing
predicted by the two typical flavor models at leading order. Although the
textures of the mass matrices are completely different, the evolution of
neutrino mass and mixing parameters is found to display approximately the same
pattern. For both normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy spectrum, the quantum
corrections to both atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixing angles are so small
that they can be neglected. The evolution of the solar mixing angle
depends on and neutrino mass spectrum, the deviation
from its tri-bimaximal value could be large. Taking into account the
renormalization group running effect, the neutrino spectrum is constrained by
experimental data on in addition to the self-consistency
conditions of the models, and the inverted hierarchy spectrum is disfavored for
large . The evolution of light-neutrino masses is approximately
described by a common scaling factor.Comment: 23 pages, 6figure

Novel Bound States Treatment of the Two Dimensional Schrodinger Equation with Pseudocentral Plus Multiparameter Noncentral Potential
By converting the rectangular basis potential V(x,y) into the form as
V(r)+V(r, phi) described by the pseudo central plus noncentral potential,
particular solutions of the two dimensional Schrodinger equation in plane-polar
coordinates have been carried out through the analytic approaching technique of
the Nikiforov and Uvarov (NUT). Both the exact bound state energy spectra and
the corresponding bound state wavefunctions of the complete system are
determined explicitly and in closed forms. Our presented results are identical
to those of the previous works and they may also be useful for investigation
and analysis of structural characteristics in a variety of quantum systemsComment: Published, 16 page
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
