Abstract
BACKGROUND: Video game seizures have been reported in photosensitive and non-photosensitive patients with epilepsy. The game Super Mario World, has led to many cases of first seizures. We examined whether this game was indeed more provocative than other programs and whether playing the game added to this effect.
METHODS: We prospectively investigated 352 patients in four European cities, using a standard protocol including testing of a variety of visual stimuli. We correlated historical data on provocative factors in daily life with electroencephalographic laboratory findings.
RESULTS: The video game, Super Mario World proved more epileptogenic than standard TV programs and as provocative as programs with flashing lights and patterns. Most striking was the fact that video game-viewing and-playing on the 50 and 100 Hz TV was significantly more provocative than viewing the standard program (P < 0.001, P < 0.05 respectively). Playing the video game Mario World on a 50 Hz TV, appeared to be significantly more provocative than playing this game on the 100 Hz TV (P < 0.001). Of 163 patients with a history of TV-, VG- or CG-seizures, 85% of them showed epileptiform discharges in response to photic stimulation, 44% to patterns, 59% to 50 Hz TV and 29% to 100 Hz TV.
CONCLUSIONS: Children and adolescents with a history of video game seizures are, in the vast majority, photosensitive and should be investigated with standardised photic stimulation. Games and programs with bright background or flashing images are specifically provocative. Playing a video game on a 100 Hz TV is less provocative [published with videosequences].

Travelling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation II
The purpose of this paper is to provide a rigorous mathematical proof of the
existence of travelling wave solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in
dimensions two and three. Our arguments, based on minimization under
constraints, yield a full branch of solutions, and extend earlier results,
where only a part of the branch was built. In dimension three, we also show
that there are no travelling wave solutions of small energy.Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Communications in

Viabilidade de uso do hĂbrido Hawaii 7996 como porta-enxerto de cultuvares comerciais de tomate.
A tĂŠcnica de enxertia ĂŠ utilizada em algumas hortaliças, principalmente em ĂĄreas infestadas, para atribuir resistĂŞncia a patĂłgenos do solo, minimizando as perdas de produção de cultivares suscetĂveis. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento e a produtividade de plantas de tomateiro enxertadas em hĂbrido, tido como resistente a Ralstonia solanacearum, em comparação a pĂŠs-francos. O experimento foi desenvolvido em viveiro (produção de mudas e enxertia) e em cĂŠu aberto, no municĂpio de Cruz das Almas, Bahia, no perĂodo de outubro de 2003 a fevereiro de 2004. Utilizou-se o mĂŠtodo de enxertia de fenda cheia, com o hĂbrido âHawaii 7996â como porta-enxerto e as cultivares Santa Clara, Santa Cruz Kada e DĂŠbora Plus, suscetĂveis a R. solanacearum, como enxerto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com seis tratamentos (3 enxertados e 3 pĂŠs-francos), 5 repetiçþes e 6 plantas por parcela Ăştil. Avaliaram-se os caracteres: diâmetro do caule, altura da planta e da primeira inflorescĂŞncia, distância entre inflorescĂŞncias e produtividade comercial de frutos. O desenvolvimento das plantas, a produção total e a massa mĂŠdia dos frutos foram semelhantes para os tratamentos enxertados em relação a seus respectivos pĂŠs-francos e nĂŁo houve incompatibilidade entre porta-enxerto e enxerto. A cultivar Santa Cruz Kada foi mais sensĂvel Ă s condiçþes agroecolĂłgicas do municĂpio de Cruz das Almas, refletindo negativamente na produção e no peso mĂŠdio dos frutos. Traveling waves for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with nonzero conditions at infinity, II
We prove the existence of nontrivial finite energy traveling waves for a
large class of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with nonzero conditions at
infinity (includindg the Gross-Pitaevskii and the so-called "cubic-quintic"
equations) in space dimension . We show that minimization of the
energy at fixed momentum can be used whenever the associated nonlinear
potential is nonnegative and it gives a set of orbitally stable traveling
waves, while minimization of the action at constant kinetic energy can be used
in all cases. We also explore the relationship between the families of
traveling waves obtained by different methods and we prove a sharp nonexistence

Neutrophil elastase promotes Leishmania donovani infection via interferon-β
Visceral leishmaniasis is a deadly illness caused by Leishmania donovani that provokes liver and spleen inflammation and tissue destruction. In cutaneous leishmaniasis, the protein of L. major named inhibitor of serine peptidases (ISP2) inactivates neutrophil elastase (NE) present at the macrophage surface, resulting in blockade of TLR4 activation, prevention of TNF and IFN production and parasite survival. We report poor intracellular growth of L. donovani in macrophages from knock-out mice for NE (ela-/-), TLR4 or TLR2. NE and TLR4 co-localized with the parasite in the parasitophorous vacuole. Parasite load in the liver and spleen of ela-/- mice were reduced and accompanied by increased nitric oxide and decreased TGF production. Expression of ISP2 was not detected in L. donovani and a transgenic line constitutively expressing ISP2, displayed poor intracellular growth in macrophages and decreased burden in mice. Infected ela-/- macrophages displayed significantly lower IFN mRNA than background mice macrophages and the intracellular growth of was fully restored by exogenous IFN. We propose that L. donovani utilizes the host NE-TLR machinery to induce IFN necessary for parasite survival/growth during early infection. Low or absent expression of parasite ISP2 in L. donovani is necessary to preserve the activation of the NE-TLR pathway
Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider
This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below.We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the Ď(4S), Ď(3S), and Ď(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-âe+e- and (for the Ď(4S) only) e+e-âÎź+Îź- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-âe+e- and e+e-âÎź+Îź-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the Ď(3S) and Ď(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to Ďâe+e-X background. For data collected off the Ď resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs. Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
