Technological Devices in the Archives: A Policy Analysis
Doing research in the archive is the cornerstone of humanities scholarship.
Various archives institute policies regarding the use of technological
devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and cameras in their reading rooms.
Such policies directly affect the scholars as the devices mediate the nature of
their interaction with the source materials in terms of capturing, organizing,
note taking, and record keeping for future use of found materials. In this paper,
we present our analysis of the policies of thirty archives regarding the use of
technology in their reading rooms. This policy analysis, along with data from
interviews of scholars and archivists, is intended to serve as a basis for developing
mobile applications for assisting scholars in their research activities. In this

Threshold bounce — occupancy-dependent modulation of the discriminating threshold in silicon detectors
The front-end electronics of silicon detectors are typically designed to ensure optimal noise performance for the expected input charge. A combination of preamplifiers and shaper circuits result in a nontrivial response of the front-end to injected charge, and the magnitude of the response may be sizeable in readout windows subsequent to that in which the charge was initially injected. The modulation of the discriminator threshold due to the superposition of the front-end response across multiple readout windows is coined “threshold bounce”. In this paper, we report a measurement of threshold bounce using silicon modules built for the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. These modules utilize ATLAS Binary Chips for their hit readout. The measurement was performed using a micro-focused 15 keV photon beam at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron. The effect of the choice of photon flux and discriminator threshold on the magnitude of the threshold bounce is studied. A Monte Carlo simulation which accounts for the front-end behaviour of the silicon modules is developed, and its predicted hit efficiency is found to be in good agreement with the measured hit efficiency
Nonmonotonic dependence of the absolute entropy on temperature in supercooled Stillinger-Weber silicon
Using a recently developed thermodynamic integration method, we compute the
precise values of the excess Gibbs free energy (G^e) of the high density liquid
(HDL) phase with respect to the crystalline phase at different temperatures (T)
in the supercooled region of the Stillinger-Weber (SW) silicon [F. H.
Stillinger and T. A. Weber, Phys. Rev. B. 32, 5262 (1985)]. Based on the slope
of G^e with respect to T, we find that the absolute entropy of the HDL phase
increases as its enthalpy changes from the equilibrium value at T \ge 1065 K to
the value corresponding to a non-equilibrium state at 1060 K. We find that the
volume distribution in the equilibrium HDL phases become progressively broader
as the temperature is reduced to 1060 K, exhibiting van-der-Waals (VDW) loop in
the pressure-volume curves. Our results provides insight into the thermodynamic
cause of the transition from the HDL phase to the low density phases in SW
silicon, observed in earlier studies near 1060 K at zero pressure.Comment: This version is accepted for publication in Journal of Statistical

Recombinant rabies vaccines : efficacy assessment in free-ranging animals
With the advancement of recombinant DNA techniques, a number of potent biologicals are available for
the oral vaccination of free-ranging animals. Once oral immunogenicity and vaccine safety have been demonstrated,
efficacy then becomes of paramount importance. Classical assessment of efficacy is conducted
under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, whereas efficacy of oral wildlife rabies vaccination
programs, to date, have been assessed by the lack (or occurrence) of field cases of rabies in a vaccinated
area. This communication describes an intermediate vaccine efficacy strategy in which self-vaccinated,
free-ranging animals from a study site were captured seven months after vaccine-laden bait distribution
for laboratory rabies challenge. This technique is specifically reviewed in the context of available recombinant

Large enhancement of deuteron polarization with frequency modulated microwaves
We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of
0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters
polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target
was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment
at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra
show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in
the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically,
they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of

A multiplexed, automated immuno-matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry assay for simultaneous and precise quantitation of PTEN and p110 alpha in cell lines and tumor tissues
The PI3-kinase/AKT/mTOR pathway plays a central role in cancer signaling. While p110 alpha is the catalytic alpha-subunit of PI3-kinase and a major drug target, PTEN is the main negative regulator of the PI3-kinase/AKT/mTOR pathway. PTEN is often down-regulated in cancer, and there are conflicting data on PTEN's role as breast cancer biomarker. PTEN and p110 alpha protein expression in tumors is commonly analyzed by immunohistochemistry, which suffers from poor multiplexing capacity, poor standardization, and antibody crossreactivity, and which provides only semi-quantitative data. Here, we present an automated, and standardized immuno-matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (iMALDI) assay that allows precise and multiplexed quantitation of PTEN and p110 alpha concentrations, without the limitations of immunohistochemistry. Our iMALDI assay only requires a low-cost benchtop MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, which simplifies clinical translation. We validated our assay's precision and accuracy, with simultaneous enrichment of both target proteins not significantly affecting the precision and accuracy of the quantitation when compared to the PTEN- and p110 alpha-singleplex iMALDI assays (<15% difference). The multiplexed assay's linear range is from 0.6-20 fmol with accuracies of 90-112% for both target proteins, and the assay is free of matrix-related interferences. The inter-day reproducibility over 5-days was high, with an overall CV of 9%. PTEN and p110 alpha protein concentrations can be quantified down to 1.4 fmol and 0.6 fmol per 10 mu g of total tumor protein, respectively, in various tumor tissue samples, including fresh-frozen breast tumors and colorectal cancer liver metastases, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumors.Proteomic
Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
