Colorless States in Perturbative QCD: Charmonium and Rapidity Gaps
We point out that an unorthodox way to describe the production of rapidity
gaps in deep inelastic scattering, recently proposed by Buchm\"uller and
Hebecker, suggests a description of the production of heavy quark bound states
which is in agreement with data. The approach questions the conventional
treatment of the color quantum number in perturbative QCD.Comment: 14 pages, plain Latex, 9 postscript figures included. Uses epsf.sty.

Higher Twist Contributions To R-Hadron Phenomenology In The Light Gluino Scenario
The open light gluino window allows non-trivial higher twist gluino
contributions to the proton wave function. Using a two-component model
originally developed for charm hadroproduction, higher twist intrinsic gluino
contributions to final state R-hadron formation are shown to enhance leading
twist production in the forward region. We calculate R-hadron
production at GeV in pp, pBe, and pCu interactions with
light gluino masses of 1.2, 1.5, 3.5, and 5.0 GeV.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, revte
Extracting W Boson Couplings from the Production of Four Leptons
We consider the processes , including all possible charged lepton combinations, with
regard to measuring parameters characterizing the boson. We calculate at
what level these processes can be used to measure anamolous triple-boson
vertice coupling parameters for the cases of colliders at 500
and 1 center of mass energies.Comment: 13 pages,OCIP/C-93-
CP Violation in the Semileptonic (B->D \pi l \nu) Decays: A Model Independent Analysis
CP violation from physics beyond the Standard Model is investigated in
decays: . The semileptonic -meson decay to
a -meson with an emission of single pion is analyzed with heavy quark
effective theory and chiral perturbation theory. In the decay process, we
include various excited states as intermediate states decaying to the final
hadrons, . The CP violation is implemented in a model independent way,
in which we extend leptonic current by including complex couplings of the
scalar sector and those of the vector sector in extensions of the Standard
Model. With these complex couplings, we calculate the CP-odd rate asymmetry and
the optimal asymmetry. We find that the optimal asymmetry is sizable and can be
detected at level with about - -meson pairs, for some
reference values of new physics effects.Comment: 25 pages, Latex, 4 figures include
Kaon-Nucleon Scattering Amplitudes and Z-Enhancements from Quark Born Diagrams
We derive closed form kaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes using the ``quark
Born diagram" formalism, which describes the scattering as a single interaction
(here the OGE spin-spin term) followed by quark line rearrangement. The low
energy I=0 and I=1 S-wave KN phase shifts are in reasonably good agreement with
experiment given conventional quark model parameters. For Gev
however the I=1 elastic phase shift is larger than predicted by Gaussian
wavefunctions, and we suggest possible reasons for this discrepancy. Equivalent
low energy KN potentials for S-wave scattering are also derived. Finally we
consider OGE forces in the related channels K, KN and K,
and determine which have attractive interactions and might therefore exhibit
strong threshold enhancements or ``Z-molecule" meson-baryon bound states.
We find that the minimum-spin, minimum-isospin channels and two additional
K channels are most conducive to the formation of bound states.
Related interesting topics for future experimental and theoretical studies of
KN interactions are also discussed.Comment: 34 pages, figures available from the authors, revte
Quantitative Tests of Color Evaporation: Charmonium Production
The color evaporation model simply states that charmonium production is
described by the same dynamics as production, {\em i.e.}, by the
formation of a colored pair. Its color happens to be bleached by
soft final-state interactions. We show that the model gives a complete picture
of charmonium production including low-energy production by proton, photon and
antiproton beams, and high-energy production at the Tevatron and HERA. Our
analysis includes the first next-to-leading-order calculation in the color
evaporation model.Comment: 12 pages (with embedded figures), Latex2.09, uses epsf.sty and

NN Core Interactions and Differential Cross Sections from One Gluon Exchange
We derive nonstrange baryon-baryon scattering amplitudes in the
nonrelativistic quark model using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism. This
approach describes the scattering as a single interaction, here the
one-gluon-exchange (OGE) spin-spin term followed by constituent interchange,
with external nonrelativistic baryon wavefunctions attached to the scattering
diagrams to incorporate higher-twist wavefunction effects. The short-range
repulsive core in the NN interaction has previously been attributed to this
spin-spin interaction in the literature; we find that these perturbative
constituent-interchange diagrams do indeed predict repulsive interactions in
all I,S channels of the nucleon-nucleon system, and we compare our results for
the equivalent short-range potentials to the core potentials found by other
authors using nonperturbative methods. We also apply our perturbative
techniques to the N and systems: Some
channels are found to have attractive core potentials and may accommodate
``molecular" bound states near threshold. Finally we use our Born formalism to
calculate the NN differential cross section, which we compare with experimental
results for unpolarised proton-proton elastic scattering. We find that several
familiar features of the experimental differential cross section are reproduced
by our Born-order result.Comment: 27 pages, figures available from the authors, revtex, CEBAF-TH-93-04,

Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider
This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below. We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs. The relative uncertainties on the luminosities of the on-resonance (off-resonance) samples are 0.43% (0.43%) for the ϒ(4S), 0.58% (0.72%) for the ϒ(3S), and 0.68% (0.88%) for the ϒ(2S).This work is supported by the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Canada), the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique and Institut National de Physique Nucléaire et de Physiquedes Particules (France), the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Germany), the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (Italy), the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (The Netherlands), the Research Council of Norway, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Spain), and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (United Kingdom). Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb of collision data
We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau
leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb of integrated luminosity
collected in collisions at =1.96 TeV with the D0 detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state
including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets,
one or two of them tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate
signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final
state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the
tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of
\TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected
sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with
electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration
with 2.3 fb of data. We measure a combined cross section of
\SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
b-Jet Identification in the D0 Experiment
Algorithms distinguishing jets originating from b quarks from other jet
flavors are important tools in the physics program of the D0 experiment at the
Fermilab Tevatron p-pbar collider. This article describes the methods that have
been used to identify b-quark jets, exploiting in particular the long lifetimes
of b-flavored hadrons, and the calibration of the performance of these
algorithms based on collider data.Comment: submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research
