Glucose Gel as a Potential Alternative Treatment to Infant Formula for Neonatal Hypoglycaemia in Australia
Infant formula is often used as a treatment for neonatal hypoglycaemia in Australia; however, there are concerns that this may jeopardise mother-baby bonding and breastfeeding. Successful use of glucose gel as an alternative treatment for hypoglycaemia has been reported. We wanted to investigate in a pilot study whether the use of glucose gel has the potential to quickly and safely restore normoglycaemia in the infants of diabetic mothers in an Australian setting. Infants with asymptomatic hypoglycaemia were treated with glucose gel (n = 36) and compared to a historical group of infants which had been treated with infant formula (n = 24). Within 15 min of the first treatment, the gel group had a mean blood glucose level (BGL) of 2.6 mmol/L, and 2.7 mmol/L 30 min after the second treatment. This was lower than the BGL after the first treatment for the formula group, which rose to a mean of 2.8 then to 3.2 mmol/L after the second treatment (p = 0.003). In successfully treated infants, administration of the gel resulted in normoglycaemia within 30 min. The likelihood of special care nursery admission was not significantly different between the groups, although we had a small sample size, and our findings should be interpreted with caution. These pilot results provide support for further investigations into the use of glucose gel as an alternative treatment to infant formula
Quantitative PCR tissue expression profiling of the human SGLT2 gene and related family members
SGLT2 (for âSodium GLucose coTransporterâ protein 2) is the major protein responsible for glucose reabsorption in the kidney and its inhibition has been the focus of drug discovery efforts to treat type 2 diabetes. In order to better clarify the human tissue distribution of expression of SGLT2 and related members of this cotransporter class, we performed TaqMan⢠(Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA) quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of SGLT2 and other sodium/glucose transporter genes on RNAs from 72 normal tissues from three different individuals. We consistently observe that SGLT2 is highly kidney specific while SGLT5 is highly kidney abundant; SGLT1, sodium-dependent amino acid transporter (SAAT1), and SGLT4 are highly abundant in small intestine and skeletal muscle; SGLT6 is expressed in the central nervous system; and sodium myoinositol cotransporter is ubiquitously expressed across all human tissues
Sex Segregation and Salary Structure in Academia
This article reports a study of aggregate unit salary levels, within a major research university. We analyze these salary levels, as they are influenced by unit sex composition, and modified by unit attainment levelsâwhere unit refers to the departments, colleges and schools, and other academic divisions of the university. We investigate three central issues of sex and salary, previously overlooked in salary studies of academic employees: Do high proportions of women depress men's unit salary levels ("competition" hypothesis)? Are women's salary levels higher in male-dominated, and lower in female-dominated, units ("concentration" hypothesis)? Are men salary-compensated for working with women ("compensation" hypothesis)? The findings support none of these hypotheses. Rather, the relationship between unit sex composition and salary rests upon the connection between units' composition and attainment levels.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/69126/2/10.1177_073088848100800103.pd
Exotic state photoproduction
It is shown that the list of unusual mesons planned for a careful study in
photoproduction can be extended by the exotic states with which should be looked for in the decay
channels in the reactions and . The full classification of the states by their
quantum numbers is presented. A simple model for the spin structure of the , , and reaction amplitudes is formulated and the tentative estimates of the
corresponding cross sections at the incident photon energy
GeV are obtained: b, b, b, and b. The problem of the
signal extraction from the natural background due to the other production channels is discussed. In particular the estimates are
presented for the , , and reaction cross sections.
Our main conclusion is that the search for the exotic
states is quite feasible at JEFLAB facility. The expected yield of the events in a 30-day run at the 100% detection
efficiency approximates events.Comment: 19 pages, revtex, 1 figure in postscipt, some comments and references

Acceptance and commitment therapy for late-life treatment-resistant generalised anxiety disorder: a feasibility study.
Background
Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder in older people. First-line management includes pharmacological and psychological therapies, but many do not find these effective or acceptable. Little is known about how to manage treatment-resistant generalised anxiety disorder (TR-GAD) in older people.
Objectives
To examine the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary estimates of the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for older people with TR-GAD.
Participants
People aged âĽ65 years with TR-GAD (defined as not responding to GAD treatment, tolerate it or refused treatment) recruited from primary and secondary care services and the community.
Intervention
Participants received up to 16 one-to-one sessions of ACT, developed specifically for older people with TR-GAD, in addition to usual care.
Measurements
Co-primary outcomes were feasibility (defined as recruitment of âĽ32 participants and retention of âĽ60% at follow-up) and acceptability (defined as participants attending âĽ10 sessions and scoring âĽ21/30 on the satisfaction with therapy subscale). Secondary outcomes included measures of anxiety, worry, depression and psychological flexibility (assessed at 0 and 20 weeks).
Results
Thirty-seven participants were recruited, 30 (81%) were retained and 26 (70%) attended âĽ10 sessions. A total of 18/30 (60%) participants scored âĽ21/30 on the satisfaction with therapy subscale. There was preliminary evidence suggesting that ACT may improve anxiety, depression and psychological flexibility.
Conclusions
There was evidence of good feasibility and acceptability, although satisfaction with therapy scores suggested that further refinement of the intervention may be necessary. Results indicate that a larger-scale randomised controlled trial of ACT for TR-GAD is feasible and warranted
Accelerating Bianchi Type-V Cosmology with Perfect Fluid and Heat Flow in Saez-Ballester Theory
In this paper we discuss the law of variation of scale factor which yields a time-dependent deceleration
parameter (DP) representing a new class of models that generate a transition of
universe from the early decelerated phase to the recent accelerating phase.
Exact solutions of Einstein's modified field equations with perfect fluid and
heat conduction are obtained within the framework of Saez-Ballester
scalar-tensor theory of gravitation and the model is found to be in good
agreement with recent observations. We find, for n = 3, k = 1, the present
value of DP in derived model as q_0 = -0.67 which is very near to the observed
value of DP at present epoch. We find that the time-dependent DP is sensible
for the present day Universe and give an earmark description of evolution of
universe. Some physical and geometric properties of the models are also
discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
