The dependence of oxygen and nitrogen abundances on stellar mass from the CALIFA survey
We analysed the optical spectra of HII regions extracted from a sample of 350
galaxies of the CALIFA survey. We calculated total O/H abundances and, for the
first time, N/O ratios using the semi-empirical routine HII-CHI-mistry, which,
according to P\'erez-Montero (2014), is consistent with the direct method and
reduces the uncertainty in the O/H derivation using [NII] lines owing to the
dispersion in the O/H-N/O relation. Then we performed linear fittings to the
abundances as a function of the de-projected galactocentric distances. The
analysis of the radial distribution both for O/H and N/O in the non-interacting
galaxies reveals that both average slopes are negative, but a non-negligible
fraction of objects have a flat or even a positive gradient (at least 10\% for
O/H and 4\% for N/O). The slopes normalised to the effective radius appear to
have a slight dependence on the total stellar mass and the morphological type,
as late low-mass objects tend to have flatter slopes. No clear relation is
found, however, to explain the presence of inverted gradients in this sample,
and there is no dependence between the average slopes and the presence of a
bar. The relation between the resulting O/H and N/O linear fittings at the
effective radius is much tighter (correlation coefficient = 0.80) than
between O/H and N/O slopes ( = 0.39) or for O/H and N/O in the
individual \hii\ regions ( = 0.37). These O/H and N/O values at the
effective radius also correlate very tightly (less than 0.03 dex of dispersion)
with total luminosity and stellar mass. The relation with other integrated
properties, such as star formation rate, colour, or morphology, can be

MEGARA Optics: stain removal in PBM2Y prisms
MEGARA is the new integral-field and multi-object optical spectrograph for the GTC. For medium and high resolution, the dispersive elements are volume phase holographic gratings, sandwiched between two flat windows and two prisms of high optical precision. The prisms are made of Ohara PBM2Y optical glass. After the prisms polishing process, some stains appeared on the surfaces. For this, in this work is shown the comparative study of five different products (muriatic acid, paint remover, sodium hydroxide, aqua regia and rare earth liquid polish) used for trying to eliminate the stains of the HR MEGARA prisms. It was found that by polishing with the hands the affected area, and using a towel like a kind of pad, and polish during five minutes using rare earth, the stains disappear completely affecting only a 5% the rms of the surface quality. Not so the use of the other products that did not show any apparent result
Trajectories of Symptom Dimensions in Short-Term Response to Antipsychotic Treatment in Patients with a First Episode of Non-Affective Psychosis
Background Trajectory patterns of positive, disorganized and negative dimension symptoms during antipsychotic treatment in drug-naive patients with first-episode psychosis have yet to be examined by using naturalistic data.
Method This pragmatic clinical trial randomized 161 drug-naive patients with a first episode of psychosis to olanzapine, risperidone or haloperidol. Patients were assessed with the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and Positive Symptoms (SAPS) at baseline and at the end of weeks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 of antipsychotic treatment. Censored normal models of response trajectories were developed with three dimensions of the SAPS-SANS scores (positive, disorganized and negative) in order to identify the different response trajectories. Diagnosis, cannabis use, duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), smoking and antipsychotic class were examined as possible predictive variables.
Results Patients were classified in five groups according to the positive dimension, three groups according to the disorganized dimension and five groups according to the negative dimension. Longer DUPs and cannabis use were associated with higher scores and poorer responses in the positive dimension. Cannabis use was associated with higher scores and poorer responses in the disorganized dimension. Only schizophrenia diagnosis was associated with higher scores and poorer responses in the negative dimension.
Conclusions Our results illustrate the heterogeneity of short-term response to antipsychotics in patients with a first episode of psychosis and highlight markedly different patterns of response in the positive, disorganized and negative dimensions. DUP, cannabis use and diagnosis appeared to have a prognostic value in predicting treatment response with different implications for each dimension
Bar pattern speeds in CALIFA galaxies: I. Fast bars across the Hubble sequence
The bar pattern speed () is defined as the rotational
frequency of the bar, and it determines the bar dynamics. Several methods have
been proposed for measuring . The non-parametric method
proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg (1984; TW) and based on stellar kinematics is
the most accurate. This method has been applied so far to 17 galaxies, most of
them SB0 and SBa types. We have applied the TW method to a new sample of 15
strong and bright barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types
from SB0 to SBbc. Combining our analysis with previous studies, we investigate
32 barred galaxies with their pattern speed measured by the TW method. The
resulting total sample of barred galaxies allows us to study the dependence of
on galaxy properties, such as the Hubble type. We measured
using the TW method on the stellar velocity maps provided by
the integral-field spectroscopy data from the CALIFA survey. Integral-field
data solve the problems that long-slit data present when applying the TW
method, resulting in the determination of more accurate . In
addition, we have also derived the ratio of the corotation radius to
the bar length of the galaxies. According to this parameter, bars can be
classified as fast ( \cal{R}\%\cal{R}$ and the galaxy morphological
type. Our results indicate that independent of the Hubble type, bars have been
formed and then evolve as fast rotators. This observational result will
constrain the scenarios of formation and evolution of bars proposed by

Central star formation and metallicity in CALIFA interacting galaxies
We use optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data from 103 nearby
galaxies at different stages of the merging event, from close pairs to merger
remnants provided by the CALIFA survey, to study the impact of the interaction
in the specific star formation and oxygen abundance on different galactic
scales. To disentangle the effect of the interaction and merger from internal
processes, we compared our results with a control sample of 80 non-interacting
galaxies. We confirm the moderate enhancement (2-3 times) of specific star
formation for interacting galaxies in central regions as reported by previous
studies; however, the specific star formation is comparable when observed in
extended regions. We find that control and interacting star-forming galaxies
have similar oxygen abundances in their central regions, when normalized to
their stellar masses. Oxygen abundances of these interacting galaxies seem to
decrease compared to the control objects at the large aperture sizes measured
in effective radius. Although the enhancement in central star formation and
lower metallicities for interacting galaxies have been attributed to tidally
induced inflows, our results suggest that other processes such as stellar
feedback can contribute to the metal enrichment in interacting galaxies.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Aperture effects on the oxygen abundance determinations from CALIFA data
This paper aims at providing aperture corrections for emission lines in a
sample of spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey
(CALIFA) database. In particular, we explore the behavior of the
log([OIII]5007/Hbeta)/([NII]6583/Halpha) (O3N2) and log[NII]6583/Halpha (N2)
flux ratios since they are closely connected to different empirical
calibrations of the oxygen abundances in star forming galaxies.
We compute median growth curves of Halpha, Halpha/Hbeta, O3N2 and N2 up to
2.5R_50 and 1.5 disk R_eff. The growth curves simulate the effect of observing
galaxies through apertures of varying radii. The median growth curve of the
Halpha/Hbeta ratio monotonically decreases from the center towards larger
radii, showing for small apertures a maximum value of ~10% larger than the
integrated one. The median growth curve of N2 shows a similar behavior,
decreasing from the center towards larger radii. No strong dependence is seen
with the inclination, morphological type and stellar mass for these growth
curves. Finally, the median growth curve of O3N2 increases monotonically with
radius. However, at small radii it shows systematically higher values for
galaxies of earlier morphological types and for high stellar mass galaxies.
Applying our aperture corrections to a sample of galaxies from the SDSS
survey at 0.02<=z<=0.3 shows that the average difference between fiber-based
and aperture corrected oxygen abundances, for different galaxy stellar mass and
redshift ranges, reaches typically to ~11%, depending on the abundance
calibration used. This average difference is found to be systematically biased,
though still within the typical uncertainties of oxygen abundances derived from
empirical calibrations. Caution must be exercised when using observations of
galaxies for small radii (e.g. below 0.5R_eff) given the high dispersion shown

The O3N2 and N2 abundance indicators revisited: improved calibrations based on CALIFA and Te-based literature data
The use of IFS is since recently allowing to measure the emission line fluxes
of an increasingly large number of star-forming galaxies both locally and at
high redshift. The main goal of this study is to review the most widely used
empirical oxygen calibrations, O3N2 and N2, by using new direct abundance
measurements. We pay special attention to the expected uncertainty of these
calibrations as a function of the index value or abundance derived and the
presence of possible systematic offsets. This is possible thanks to the
analysis of the most ambitious compilation of Te-based HII regions to date.
This new dataset compiles the Te-based abundances of 603 HII regions extracted
from the literature but also includes new measurements from the CALIFA survey.
Besides providing new and improved empirical calibrations for the gas
abundance, we also present here a comparison between our revisited calibrations
with a total of 3423 additional CALIFA HII complexes with abundances derived
using the ONS calibration by Pilyugin et al. (2010). The combined analysis of
Te-based and ONS abundances allows us to derive their most accurate calibration
to date for both the O3N2 and N2 single-ratio indicators, in terms of all
statistical significance, quality and coverage of the space of parameters. In
particular, we infer that these indicators show shallower abundance
dependencies and statistically-significant offsets compared to those of Pettini
and Pagel (2004), Nagao et al. (2006) and P\'erez-Montero and Contini (2009).
The O3N2 and N2 indicators can be empirically applied to derive oxygen
abundances calibrations from either direct abundance determinations with random
errors of 0.18 and 0.16, respectively, or from indirect ones (but based on a
large amount of data) reaching an average precision of 0.08 and 0.09 dex
(random) and 0.02 and 0.08 dex (systematic; compared to the direct

The Star-Formation Histories of z~2 DOGs and SMGs
The Spitzer Space Telescope has identified a population of ultra-luminous
infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z ~ 2 that may play an important role in the
evolution of massive galaxies. We measure the stellar masses of two populations
of Spitzer-selected ULIRGs, both of which have extremely red R-[24] colors
(dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) and compare our results with sub-millimeter
selected galaxies (SMGs). One set of 39 DOGs has a local maximum in their
mid-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest-frame 1.6um associated with
stellar emission ("bump DOGs"), while the other set of 51 DOGs has a power-law
dominated mid-IR SED with spectral features typical of obscured AGN ("power-law
DOGs"). We use stellar population synthesis models applied self-consistently to
broad-band photometry in the rest-frame ultra-violet, optical, and
near-infrared of each of these populations and test a variety of stellar
population synthesis codes, star-formation histories (SFHs), and initial mass
functions (IMFs). Assuming a simple stellar population SFH and a Chabrier IMF,
we find that the median and inner quartile stellar masses of SMGs, bump DOGs
and power-law DOGs are given by log(M_*/M_sun) = 10.42_-0.36^+0.42,
10.62_-0.32^+0.36, and 10.71_-0.34^+0.40, respectively. Implementing more
complicated SFHs with multiple age components increases these mass estimates by
up to 0.5 dex. Our stellar mass estimates are consistent with physical
mechanisms for the origin of z~2 ULIRGs that result in high star-formation
rates for a given stellar mass. Such mechanisms are usually driven by a major
merger of two gas-rich systems, rather than smooth accretion of gas and small

Global and regional cortical thinning in first-episode psychosis patients: relationships with clinical and cognitive features
BackgroundThe thickness of the cortical mantle is a sensitive measure for identifying alterations in cortical structure. We aimed to explore whether first episode schizophrenia patients already show a significant cortical thinning and whether cortical thickness anomalies may significantly influence clinical and cognitive features.MethodWe investigated regional changes in cortical thickness in a large and heterogeneous sample of schizophrenia spectrum patients (n=142) at their first break of the illness and healthy controls (n=83). Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans (1.5 T) were obtained and images were analyzed by using BRAINS2. The contribution of sociodemographic, cognitive and clinical characterictics was investigated.ResultsPatients showed a significant total cortical thinning (F=17.55, d=−0.62, p0.53). No significant group × gender interactions were observed (all p’s>0.15). There were no significant associations between the clinical and pre-morbid variables and cortical thickness measurements (all r’s<0.12). A weak significant negative correlation between attention and total (r=−0.24, p=0.021) and parietal cortical thickness (r=−0.27, p=0.009) was found in patients (thicker cortex was associated with lower attention). Our data revealed a similar pattern of cortical thickness changes related to age in patients and controls.ConclusionsCortical thinning is independent of gender, age, age of onset and duration of the illness and does not seem to significantly influence clinical and functional symptomatology. These findings support a primary neuro-development disorder affecting the normal cerebral cortex development in schizophrenia
