Reanalysis in Hungarian Comparative Subclauses

My paper presents a diachronic study of the Left Periphery of Hungarian comparative subclauses, primarily focussing on the development of the complementisers and the operator. Adopting a cartographic approach, I will show that there were two main interrelated processes at work in the development of these subclauses, changing the initial configuration of hogy ‘that’ as a complementiser to a new one having mint ‘than’ as a C head, possibly followed by an overt operator. These two processes involve the reanalysis of mint from an operator to a complementiser by way of the relative cycle, and the appearance of new overt comparative operators due to a change in the deletion of the operator (Comparative Deletion)

Creating a balance between resources and tasks

One of the ultimate requirements for policymakers is to create and maintain a balance between resources and tasks. There is always a chance to accomplish the above goal either in an individual case or in the system as a whole, both at local government and at central government levels, irrespective of the fact whether this is done within or without a systematic structural reform. Those who consider the above statement unacceptably sterile or alien to daily practice may easily be misled to indefinitely delaying the practical implementation of this requirement. As far as I am concerned, the only practical concession I can allow policymakers is the following: the absence of or distortions in the balance are to be remedied within the timeframe of a political cycle rather than within one budgetary year in order to make sure that the verifiable results of the measures discounted to the present should be immediately visible. I believe that any policy measure that fails to treat and manage the above task in this manner is irresponsible

Hydrogen peroxide oxidation for in situ remediation of trichloroethylene – from the laboratory to the field

In this paper we present the remediation possibilities of a trichloroethylene contaminated site of a former metalworking plant in Hungary, where high TCE concentration (150 μg/L to 35.000 μg/L) was detected in the groundwater. Lab-scale experiments were performed to compare the potential bioremediation technology-alternatives eg.: enhanced biodegradation; pump & treat by UV irradiation (photodegradation); in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) applying different oxidants (KMnO4, Na2S2O8 and H2O2). The lab-scale experiments showed in all cases reduction of the TCE-concentration of the water. Comparing the removal efficacy and concerning the time requirement ISCO was the most effective in laboratory studies

Effect of cage and pen housing on the live performance, carcase, and meat quality traits of growing rabbits

The aim of the experiment was to study the effect of housing growing rabbits in enriched cages with small groups (eight rabbits/cage, C; n = 96; stocking density: 15 rabbits/m2) or in enriched pens with large groups (65 rabbits/pen, P; n = 130; stocking density: 15 rabbits/m2) on their growth performance and on slaughter and meat quality traits. The C rabbits showed higher final body weight (2540 vs. 2443 g, p < .01), better feed conversion ratio (5–11 weeks: 3.39 vs. 3.61, p < .05), lower mortality rate (5.2 vs. 31.5%, p < .001), and lower fecal corticosterone level (26.3 vs. 29.4 nmol/g, p < .05) compared to P rabbits. The increased possibility of physical activity of P compared to C rabbits resulted in more developed hind part of the reference carcase, thicker hind leg bones (34.8 vs. 33.4 g, p < .05), lower perirenal fat (15.1 vs. 20.8 g, p < .001) and hind leg meat lipid content (2.00 vs. 2.42%, p < .05), as well as higher haem iron content of the hind leg meat (5.29 vs. 4.22 mg/kg, p < .01). However, pen housing was detrimental for the dressing out percentage and for the hind leg meat to bones ratio. Physical meat quality traits were not affected by the housing system.Highlights Housing of growing rabbits in large cages and large pens was compared. Caged rabbits had better productive performance, lower mortality and stress. Penned rabbits resulted in lower dressing out percentage, carcase adiposity and meat lipids content. Most of the meat quality traits were independent of the housing system

Magyar generatív történeti mondattan = Hungarian generative diachronic syntax

Elkészítettük a kéziratos ómagyar és korai középmagyar szövegek, köztük 47 kódex digitális adatbázisát, egy kétmillió szavas korpuszt. 11 kódexszöveghez normalizált helyesírású változatot is illesztettünk. Négy kódexet morfológiailag is annotáltunk. Az adatbázishoz felhasználóbarát keresőt készítettünk. Elemeztük az ómagyar szövegek mondattanát, olykor az ősmagyar korig visszanyúlva. Egyes változásokat a középmagyar koron át az újmagyar korig követtük. Amellett érveltünk, hogy az ősmagyar mondat SOV szórendű volt, és az ősmagyar/ómagyar kor fordulóján változott SVO-vé. Hipotézist állítottunk fel a változás okáról és lefolyásáról. Végigkísértük a határozott névelő kialakulását és a birtokos szerkezet változásait. Kimutattuk , hogy míg az ősmagyart az adverbiális kvantifikáció jellemezte, az ómagyar kor közepére a determinánsi kvantifikáció vált általánossá. A névutós szerkezeteket a relációs főnevet tartalmazó birtokos szerkezetektől a határozóragokig vezető grammatikalizációs út állomásaként elemeztük. Vizsgáltuk az ősmagyar SOV örökségeként továbbélő sokféle korai ómagyar igeneves szerkezetet, és megmutattuk, hogyan szorította ki őket a véges alárendelés. A változásokban kimutattuk a nyelvi változások univerzális válfajait: az újraelemzést, a grammatikalizációt, és megmutattunk a változások ciklikus voltát. Eredményeinket egy magyar és egy angol kötetben foglaltuk össze; előbbi az Akadémiai Kiadónál, utóbbi az Oxford University Pressnél áll megjelenés alatt. | We compiled a 2-million-word corpus of Old and Early Middle Hungarian manuscripts, among them 47 codices. In the case of 11 codices, we also prepared a paleographically normalized version. 4 codices were morphologically parsed and annotated. We prepared a user-friendly corpus query tool. We analyzed the syntax of Old Hungarian texts, often also reconstructing the Proto-Hungarian antecedents. We have followed some of the changes up to the present. We concluded that the Proto-Hungarian sentence was SOV, which changed into SOV at the turn of the Proto-Hungarian/Old Hungarian periods. We have set up a hypothesis about the causes and the process of this change. We analyzed the stages of the emergence of the definite article and the changes of the possessive construction. We pointed out a shift from adverbial quantification to determiner quantification. We analyzed postpositional constructions as intermediate steps on the grammaticalization path leading from possessive constructions with a relational head noun to adverbial suffixes. We investigated the rich system of non-finite subordination surviving from the SOV Proto-Hungarian era, and its gradual replacement by finite subordination. We pointed out the universal mechanisms of change, among them reanalysis and grammaticalization, and we showed the cyclic nature of changes. We summarized our results in a Hungarian and in an English book. The former is being published by Akadémiai Kiadó, the latter, by Oxford University Press
