Myobiid mites (Trombidiformes, Myobiidae) of the golden bat Mimon cozumelae from Mexico. Description of the male and tritonymph of Ioanella mimon and new records of Eudusbabekia mimon

The male and the tritonymph of Ioanella mimon are described for the first time parasitizing to Mimon cozumelae from Yucatan, Mexico. Male of I. mimon is characterized by the presence of legs I with the tibia and tarsus fused forming a small complex devoided of apical claws, legs II–IV with two claws, setae vi at level of anterior end of genital plate, genital plate rounded with an anterior projection, all intercoxal setae short; while the tritonymph is characterized by the presence of legs I unequal; legs II–IV with 2-1-1 claws, and posterior region of dorsal idiosoma with 3 pairs of cylindrical and toothed setae. Additionally, we include new locality and host records for Eudusbabekia mimon which was also found on M. cozumelae. Both species were described originally in association with Mimon bennettii at Bartica, Guyana

Weber approach for retromolar adenoid cyst carcinoma: case report and literature review

Adenoid cyst carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon facial tumor and challenging to treat; surgical treatment is challenging due to its localization. A 49-year-old Latin female patient with a one-year history of soft tissue-depending mass of slow growth in the right maxillary region. Laboratory tests reported normal. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a maxillary tumor. Patient underwent to surgical resection by Weber-Fergusson approach. The patient received postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. ACC is a challenging entity to treat, surgical resection, and radiotherapy is required. The combination of surgery and radiotherapy represents the definitive treatment for ACC. Chemotherapy remains controversial and is reserved for palliation in selected cases.

Synthetic Biology Tools for Engineering Microbial Cells to Fight Superbugs

With the increase in clinical cases of bacterial infections with multiple antibiotic resistance, the world has entered a health crisis. Overuse, inappropriate prescribing, and lack of innovation of antibiotics have contributed to the surge of microorganisms that can overcome traditional antimicrobial treatments. In 2017, the World Health Organization published a list of pathogenic bacteria, including Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli (ESKAPE). These bacteria can adapt to multiple antibiotics and transfer their resistance to other organisms; therefore, studies to find new therapeutic strategies are needed. One of these strategies is synthetic biology geared toward developing new antimicrobial therapies. Synthetic biology is founded on a solid and well-established theoretical framework that provides tools for conceptualizing, designing, and constructing synthetic biological systems. Recent developments in synthetic biology provide tools for engineering synthetic control systems in microbial cells. Applying protein engineering, DNA synthesis, and in silico design allows building metabolic pathways and biological circuits to control cellular behavior. Thus, synthetic biology advances have permitted the construction of communication systems between microorganisms where exogenous molecules can control specific population behaviors, induce intracellular signaling, and establish co-dependent networks of microorganisms

Building a Gold Standard Dataset to Identify Articles About Geographic Information Science

To know the overall regional or international scientific production is of vital importance to many areas of knowledge. Nevertheless, in interdisciplinary areas such as Geographic Information Science (GISc) it is not enough to just count papers published in specific journals. Most of them, as is the case of the International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS), welcome GISc papers but are not exclusive to that area so the production assignable to authors in the region must consider not only affiliation but also whether or not each paper falls into the theme of GISc. IJRS publishes far more papers than any other GISc journal, so it is important to assess quantitatively how many of them are of GISc. In this work, a representative sample of IJRS articles published over a period of almost 30 years was analyzed using a specific GISc definition. With these data, a manual classification methodology through a set of experts was carried out, and a dataset was built, analyzed, and statistically tested. As a result we estimate that between 47 and 76% of the IJRS articles can be considered from GISc, with a confidence level of 95%. Aside from the primary goal, this set could be used as a gold standard for future classification tasks. It constitutes the first GISc dataset of this kind, that may be used to train artificial intelligence systems capable of performing the same classification automatically and in a massive way. A similar procedure could be applied to other interdisciplinary fields of knowledge as well

Este volumen acoge la memoria académica de la Cuarta edición del Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2017, desarrollado entre el 29 de noviembre y el 1 de diciembre de 2017 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS) en su sede de Guayaquil. El Congreso ofreció un espacio para la presentación, difusión e intercambio de importantes investigaciones nacionales e internacionales ante la comunidad universitaria que se dio cita en el encuentro. El uso de herramientas tecnológicas para la gestión de los trabajos de investigación como la plataforma Open Conference Systems y la web de presentación del Congreso http://citis.blog.ups.edu.ec/, hicieron de CITIS 2017 un verdadero referente entre los congresos que se desarrollaron en el país. Aplicación de gestión de inventarios para incrementar el nivel de servicio del almacén en una empresa, Jesús María 2020.

El objetivo del trabajo de investigación es determinar en qué medida la gestión de inventarios mejora el nivel de servicios del almacén en la empresa Jesús María 2020. El problema general es el bajo nivel de servicio del almacén, el cual se procedió a desarrollar la metodología de la gestión de inventarios, que ayude a mejorar el incremento en la entregas completas y entregas a tiempo. El tipo de investigación es aplicada, diseño pre experimental, la población es los pedidos atendidos, técnica es la observación, instrumentos es la ficha de observación para recolección de los datos, para el método de análisis de datos se utilizó el software estadístico SPSS v 24. Análisis descriptivo se utilizó las medidas de tendencia central y medidas de dispersión y en la estadística inferencial el análisis de normalidad de Shapiro Wilk aplicada a las variables estudiadas. El resultado del nivel de servicio tuvo un incremento de 23%. Las entregas completas con un incremento de 20% y por ultimo las entregas a tiempo un incremento de 8%. Las conclusiones a que se llega son que la gestión de inventarios mejoro el nivel de servicio en un 77% en el almacén

Actividad antiinflamatoria de plantas medicinales (Revisión)

A review was carried out on the anti-inflammatory activity of the medicinal plants most used for this purpose, identifying the metabolites related to the biological activity and the techniques used in their experimental determination. In order to update the knowledge on anti-inflammatory activity of medicinal plants, documents and articles of free access indexed in the Pubmed, Scopus, Scielo and Science direct databases were used, preferably from the last five years. The information reflected in this material can be used as an important reference for medical therapy and as a guide in the investigation of new anti-inflammatory products of plant origin.Se realizó una revisión sobre la actividad antiinflamatoria de las plantas medicinales más empleadas con este fin, identificando los metabolitos relacionados con la actividad biológica y las técnicas empleadas en su determinación experimental. Con el objetivo de actualizar los conocimientos sobre actividad antiinflamatoria de las plantas medicinales fueron empleados documentos y artículos de libre acceso indexados en las bases de datos Pubmed, Scopus, Scielo y Science direct, preferentemente de los últimos cinco años. La información reflejada en este material puede ser utilizada como una referencia importante para la terapéutica médica y como guía en la investigación de nuevos productos antiinflamatorios de origen vegetal
