    O aprendizado de bioquímica por meio de metodologias ativas: um estudo transversal

    Artigo apresentado na forma de "banner" na Primeira Mostra Científica e Tecnológica da UFSC CuritibanosA disciplina de Bioquímica é obrigatória nas primeiras fases dos cursos de Agronomia, Engenharia Florestal e Medicina Veterinária. Normalmente os estudantes enfrentam dificuldades com o conteúdo dessa disciplina, resultando em alto índice de reprovação e desinteresse na busca do conhecimento nessa área. O objetivo desse projeto foi promover a melhora da aprendizagem utilizando metodologias ativas. Assim, durante o primeiro e segundo semestre de 2019, foram realizadas atividades de ensino desenvolvidas por meio de trabalhos em equipes utilizando a Instrução entre Pares e Aprendizado Baseado em Problemas com os temas considerados mais difíceis em semestres anteriores. Como critério de acompanhamento da disciplina aplicou-se um formulário eletrônico de pesquisa. Responderam ao formulário 47 estudantes, onde a maioria (85,7%) afirmou ter tido contato com esse conteúdo pela primeira vez, mas consideram (71,4%) que o desempenho em química e biologia no Ensino Médio estaria entre 7-9. Com relação as dificuldades encontradas em Bioquímica, os assuntos considerados “difícil” foi o ciclo de Krebs (2 a cada 8) e cadeia respiratória (2 a cada 7). Foi perguntado sobre o aproveitamento em sala de aula em diferentes metodologias de ensino e a maioria respondeu que obteve melhor aproveitamento durante a realização de trabalho em grupo (33,3%) e nas discussões de questões por Instrução entre Pares (23,8%). Esse trabalho demonstrou que a utilização de metodologias ativas no ensino de Bioquímica, produziu maior participação e interesse pelo conteúdo ministrado

    n-3 fatty acids and coronary artery disease

    n-3 Poliunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) are essential; foods rich in n-3 are fat fish and some vegetal oil. PUFA are precursors of Eicosanoids, involved in the processes of inflammation, thrombosis and immunity. Firstly, observational studies measured reduction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence with greater PUFA dietary intake. Experimental studies discovered antiahrrhytmic, antiatherogenic, antiaggregating and antiinflammatory properties. Retrospective analysis found lower incidence of sudden death (SD) in fish consumers. Randomized, prospective trials after myocardial infarction showed, in people either eating fish or receiving an n-3 PUFA supplement, a reduction of SD, explained by specific effect on membrane ion channels. The lack of results on atherothrombosis do not match with most experimental results, and should better be evaluated in absence of aspirin therapy. Low evidence supports use of n-3 PUFA in angina or revascularization procedures. Recent observations denote positive effect on endothelial function of large and resistance arteries. Actually evidence-based medicine suggest: improve of fish consumption for primary prevention of CVD; n-3 PUFA supplementation for hypertrigliceridemia and secondary prevention of SD after myocardial infarction, which is also cost-effectiveness

    Screening the health status of people working in a university

    Background: We aimed to evaluate the physical and mental well being of people working in our academic institution. Methods: This online survey targeted professors ( n = 108), researchers ( n = 78), technical and administrative staff ( n = 279) working in the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (Pisa, Italy). Twenty-four multiple-choice questions explored the physical and mental health status, the main cardiovascular risk factors and levels of physical activity, the risk of cancer, and eating and drinking habits. Results: Over 1 week, 112 participants out of 465 (24%) completed the survey [69% women, median age 43 years (interquartile range 33-53)]. The physical and mental health were judged as 'poor' by 5% and 13%. Many individuals had at least one cardiovascular risk factor (diabetes, 4%; hypertension, 10%; family history of coronary artery disease before 40 years, 21%; hypercholesterolemia, 24%; current or former smoking habit, 39%), and 6% had all of them. Many participants were rather sedentary: for example, 44% never or hardly ever walked at a quick pace for ≥20 min. As for eating and drinking habits, 36% ate sweets five or six times a week or every day, 15% drank beer and/or wine at least five or six times a week, and 5% drank spirits three or four times a week. Conclusions: A small but not negligeable proportion of responders complained of 'poor' health, and 65% had at least one cardiovascular risk factor. The global levels of physical activity and eating and drinking habits were globally suboptimal. Educational and screening activities to improve the wellbeing of people working in academia are advisable

    Valvular heart disease in patients with cardiac amyloidosis

    : Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an underdiagnosed condition caused by the deposition of misfolded proteins, namely immunoglobulin light chains and transthyretin, in the extracellular spaces of the heart. Any cardiovascular structure can be affected by amyloid infiltration, including the valves. Amyloid accumulation within the cardiac valves may lead to their structural and functional impairment, with a profound impact on patients' prognosis and quality of life. The most common forms of valvular disease in CA are aortic stenosis (AS), mitral regurgitation (MR), and tricuspid regurgitation (TR). CA and AS share similar risk factors, disease mechanisms, and remodeling patterns, which make their diagnosis particularly challenging. Patients with both CA and AS experience worse outcomes than CA or AS alone, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement may represent a useful therapeutic strategy in this population. Data on MR and TR are quite limited and mainly coming from case reports or small series. This review paper will summarize our current understanding on the epidemiology, disease mechanisms, echocardiographic features, clinical implications, and therapeutic options of AS, MR, and TR in patients with CA

    Loss of nuclear p27kip1 and α-dystroglycan is a frequent event and is a strong predictor of poor outcome in renal cell carcinoma

    Expression levels of p27kip1, a negative regulator of the G1 phase of the cell cycle, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative DNA damage, were assessed by immunostaining in a series of renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) and their prognostic significance was evaluated. Expression of p27kip1 as well as of the α-subunit of the dystroglycan (DG) complex, previously reported to be altered in RCC, was also evaluated by western blot analysis. Nuclear expression of p27kip1 was reduced in a significant fraction of tumors and low p27kip1 staining correlated with higher tumor grade (P < 0.01). Recurrence and death from clear cell RCCs were significantly more frequent in p27kip1-low expressing tumors and Kaplan–Meier curves showed a significant separation between high vs low expressor groups for both disease-free (P = 0.011) and overall (P = 0.002) survival. Low nuclear expression of p27kip1 as well as loss of α-DG were confirmed to be independent prognostic parameters at a multivariate analysis and the simultaneous loss of both molecules defined a "high-risk" group of patients with increased risk of recurrence (RR = 28.7; P = 0.01) and death (RR = 12.9; P = 0.03). No significant correlation with clinical or pathological parameters was found for 8-OHdG staining. Western blot analyses suggested a post-translational mechanism for the loss of α-DG expression and demonstrated that cytoplasmic dislocation of the protein contributes to the loss of active nuclear p27kip1. Loss of nuclear p27kip1 is a frequent event in human RCCs and is a powerful predictor of poor outcome which, in combination with low DG expression, could help to identify high-risk patients with clear cell RCC.     In the year 2006 the Italian Association of Hospital Cardiologists (ANMCO) promoted a Consensus Conference among professional Scientific Societies in order to redefine the role and core responsibilities of each health professionals involved in heart failure management in a novel integrated network. Five years later, a questionnaire has been proposed to each Italian Regional President of the Association, in order to assess the implementation of the proposed management strategies in the different clinical scenarios of the Italian Regions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.
