    Adoption of Business Model Canvas in Exploring Digital Business Transformation

    Digital Business Transformation (DBT) values and contributions are still unrecognized by many organizations. Managers face problems in initiating their digital transformation due to the challenges and complexities in the realization of these processes. Business Model Canvas (BMC) – known as a semantically enriched tool for business model analysis and design – is a rather novel approach proposed to solve this problem. It is used to highlight organizations’ capabilities and verify the role of IT systems in organizations. Further empirical investigations are required to identify BMCs role in DBT and specify the main changes caused by IT systems. For this purpose, a case study of “The Faculty of Scientific Research at Zarqa University” is used to demonstrate how BMC can be utilized as a part of the DBT process, where a new internal IT system for Scientific Research is introduced, and BMC is implemented through. The Scientific Research Information System (SRIS) has been used to manage the research in the faculty. The BMC design was implemented pre and post-using the SRIS. A proposed model was derived based on the difference between both implementations. A quantitative approach using an online questionnaire was accomplished to evaluate this model and measure its new elements post using SRIS. The research results show that Key Activities, Key Resources, Value Propositions, Customer Relationships, and Channels are the main zones related to DBT. In addition, the changes in the elements of Key Resources are the essential motive and the cornerstone of DBT

    Joint Communication and Computation in Hybrid Cloud/Mobile Edge Computing Networks

    Facing a vast amount of connections, huge performance demands, and the need for reliable connectivity, the sixth generation of communication networks (6G) is envisioned to implement disruptive technologies that jointly spur connectivity, performance, and reliability. In this context, this paper proposes, and evaluates the benefit of, a hybrid central cloud (CC) computing and mobile edge computing (MEC) platform, especially introduced to balance the network resources required for joint computation and communication. Consider a hybrid cloud and MEC system, where several power-hungry multi-antenna unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are deployed at the cell-edge to boost the CC connectivity and relieve part of its computation burden. While the multi-antenna base stations are connected to the cloud via capacity-limited fronthaul links, the UAVs serve the cell-edge users with limited power and computational capabilities. The paper then considers the problem of maximizing the weighted network sum-rate subject to per-user delay, computational capacity, and power constraints, so as to determine the beamforming vectors and computation allocations. Such intricate non-convex optimization problem is tackled using an iterative algorithm that relies on â„“0\ell_0-norm relaxation, successive convex approximation, and fractional programming, and has the compelling ability to be implemented in a distributed fashion across the multiple UAVs and the CC.     Pricing of time-varying illiquidity within the Eurozone: Evidence using a Markov switching liquidity-adjusted capital asset pricing model

    This paper investigates time-varying characteristics of illiquidity and the pricing of its risk using a liquidity-adjusted capital asset pricing model (L-CAPM). Collecting data from a pool of Eurozone countries between 1990 and 2018, we employ Markov switching models to assess the degree of persistence of illiquidity shocks. Contrary to prior research, which largely makes use of autoregressive (AR) processes, we provide strong evidence that illiquidity is time-varying and the persistence of shocks determines two distinct regimes characterised by high and low illiquidity. We assess pricing of illiquidity risk by developing and empirically testing a conditional L-CAPM model, where different regimes constitute priced risk factors for the cross-section of stock returns. We extend previous unconditional versions of L-CAPM models and we show that the various channels through which illiquidity affects asset returns and price of risks are time-varying. We find strong support for our conditional L-CAPM and our results are robust to alternative specifications and estimation techniques. These findings have important implications for portfolio management practices and are relevant to portfolio and risk managers and regulatory institutions

    Relationship between Helicobacter pylori Virulence Genes and Clinical Outcomes in Saudi Patients

    Helicobacter pylori has been strongly associated with gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and it is a risk factor for gastric cancer. Two major virulence factors of H. pylori have been described: the cytotoxin-associated gene product (cagA) and the vacuolating toxin (vacA). Since considerable geographic diversity in the prevalence of H. pylori virulence factors has been reported, the aim of this work was to determine if there is a significant correlation between different H. pylori virulence genes (cagA and vacA) in 68 patients, from Saudi Arabia, and gastric clinical outcomes. H. pylor was recognized in cultures of gastric biopsies. vacA and cagA genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The cagA gene was obtained with 42 isolates (61.8%). The vacA s- and m- region genotypes were determined in all strains studied. Three genotypes were found: s1/m1 (28%), s1/m2 (40%) and s2/m2 (26%). The s2/m1 genotype was not found in this study. The relation of the presence of cagA and the development of cases to gastritis and ulcer was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The study showed a significant correlation between the vacA s1/m2 genotype and gastritis cases, and a significant correlation between vacA s1/m1 genotype and peptic ulcer cases. The results of this study might be used for the identification of high-risk patients who are infected by vacA s1/m1 genotype of H. pylori strains.     Brucella and Osteoarticular Cell Activation: Partners in Crime

    Osteoarticular brucellosis is the most common presentation of human active disease although its prevalence varies widely. The three most common forms of osteoarticular involvement are sacroiliitis, spondylitis, and peripheral arthritis. The molecular mechanisms implicated in bone damage have been recently elucidated. B. abortus induces bone damage through diverse mechanisms in which TNF-α and the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)-the natural modulator of bone homeostasis are involved. These processes are driven by inflammatory cells, like monocytes/macrophages, neutrophils, Th17 CD4+ T, and B cells. In addition, Brucella abortus has a direct effect on osteoarticular cells and tilts homeostatic bone remodeling. These bacteria inhibit bone matrix deposition by osteoblasts (the only bone cells involved in bone deposition), and modify the phenotype of these cells to produce matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cytokine secretion, contributing to bone matrix degradation. B. abortus also affects osteoclasts (cells naturally involved in bone resorption) by inducing an increase in osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activation; thus, increasing mineral and organic bone matrix resorption, contributing to bone damage. Given that the pathology induced by Brucella species involved joint tissue, experiments conducted on synoviocytes revealed that besides inducing the activation of these cells to secrete chemokines, proinflammatory cytokines and MMPS, the infection also inhibits synoviocyte apoptosis. Brucella is an intracellular bacterium that replicates preferentially in the endoplasmic reticulum of macrophages. The analysis of B. abortus-infected synoviocytes indicated that bacteria also replicate in their reticulum suggesting that they could use this cell type for intracellular replication during the osteoarticular localization of the disease. Finally, the molecular mechanisms of osteoarticular brucellosis discovered recently shed light on how the interaction between B. abortus and immune and osteoarticular cells may play an important role in producing damage in joint and bone.Fil: Giambartolomei, Guillermo Hernan.     Robust processor allocation for independent tasks when dollar cost for processors is a constraint

    Includes bibliographical references (pages 9-10).In a distributed heterogeneous computing system, the resources have different capabilities and tasks have different requirements. Different classes of machines used in such systems typically vary in dollar cost based on their computing efficiencies. Makespan (defined as the completion time for an entire set of tasks) is often the performance feature that is optimized. Resource allocation is often done based on estimates of the computation time of each task on each class of machines. Hence, it is important that makespan be robust against errors in computation time estimates. The dollar cost to purchase the machines for use can be a constraint such that only a subset of the machines available can be purchased. The goal of this study is to: (1) select a subset of all the machines available so that the cost constraint for the machines is satisfied, and (2) find a static mapping of tasks so that the robustness of the desired system feature, makespan, is maximized against the errors in task execution time estimates.     Having diabetes and having to fast: A qualitative study of British Muslims with diabetes

    Background: There are approximately 2.7 million Muslims in the UK, constituting 4.8% of the population. It is estimated that 325000 UK Muslims have diabetes. Whilst dietary practices of Muslims with diabetes have been explored, little work has described the beliefs and decisions to fast during Ramadan, whereby Muslims with diabetes refrain from eating, drinking and taking medication between sunrise and sunset. Objective: To explore beliefs and experiences of fasting during Ramadan of Muslim respondents with diabetes and their perceptions of the role played by their general practitioner (GP) and/or practice nurse (PN) in supporting them. Design: Qualitative study. Setting: General practices and community groups located in Greater Manchester. Participants: 23 South Asian Muslims. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted as part of the Collaboration of Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) programme, Greater Manchester. Respondents were recruited using random and purposive sampling techniques. Interviews were analysed thematically using a constant comparison approach. Results: Thirteen respondents reported they fasted and altered diabetes medication and diet during Ramadan. The decision to fast was influenced by pressures from the family and the collective social aspect of fasting, and respondents made limited contact with primary care during fasting. Conclusion: Tensions exist between the respondent's personal desire to fast or not fast and their family's opinion on the matter, with a strong reluctance to disclose fasting to GP and/or PN. Future research needs to explore whether GPs or PNs feel competent enough to support patients who wish to fast
