    Heterozygous deletion of both sclerostin (Sost) and connexin43 (Gja1) genes in mice is not sufficient to impair cortical bone modeling

    Connexin43 (Cx43) is the main gap junction protein expressed in bone forming cells, where it modulates peak bone mass acquisition and cortical modeling. Genetic ablation of the Cx43 gene (Gja1) results in cortical expansion with accentuated periosteal bone formation associated with decreased expression of the Wnt inhibitor sclerostin. To determine whether sclerostin (Sost) down-regulation might contribute to periosteal expansion in Gja1 deficient bones, we took a gene interaction approach and crossed mice harboring germline null alleles for Gja1 or Sost to generate single Gja1+/-and Sost+/-and double Gja1+/-;Sost+/-heterozygous mice. In vivo μCT analysis of cortical bone at age 1 and 3 months confirmed increased thickness in Sost-/-mice, but revealed no cortical abnormalities in single Gja1+/-or Sost+/-mice. Double heterozygous Gja1+/-Sost+/-also showed no differences in mineral density, cortical thickness, width or geometry relative to wild type control mice. Likewise, 3-point bending measurement of bone strength revealed no significant differences between double Gja1+/-;Sost+/-or single heterozygous and wild type mice. Although these data do not exclude a contribution of reduced sclerostin in the cortical expansion seen in Gja1 deficient bones, they are not consistent with a strong genetic interaction between Sost and Gja1 dictating cortical modeling

    Cutaneous metastases from large bowel cancer are uncommon and are usually associated with organ involvement. Localization of lesions to the skin is mainly attributed to vascular and anatomical relationship, since most of them are seen in the abdominal wall or in a surgical scar. We report a 73-year-old woman in whom metastatic nodules from a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the right colon developed throughout the skin (buttock, trunk, chest wall, arms, and neck) and remained the only sign of extranodal tumor spread until patient's death, seven months later. This unusual behaviour suggests that localization of neoplastic cells to the skin may be a site-specific process, determined by adhesion molecules and/or by growth factors found at that site

Occasionally, they occur in the rectum and may cause aspecific symptoms; presentation with rectal prolapse is very unusual and may lead to a misdiagnosis of simple mucosal prolapse.     Morphology and chromosomes of Tatera Lataste 1882 (Rodentia Muridae Gerbillinae) in West Africa

    In a sample of the genus Tatera Lataste 1882 from West Africa (Benin and Burkina Faso), we analyzed the cranial and dental morphology and the karyotype (G, R, C and NOR banding). The cranial morphology confirms the attribution of this sample to Tatera kempi Wroughton 1906. An analysis of the dental morphology was also performed but it seems not to offer diagnostic traits. The karyotype described in the present work for T. kempi is comparable with that described for T. hopkinsoni Thomas 1911, supporting the synonymy of these two taxa. In contrast, the karyological results clearly discriminate kempi from both guineae and nigrita, the latter currently considered a synonym. In the karyotype of T. kempi, we found a polymorphism of a small chromosome, which occurs in the three situations: metacentric/metacentric, metacentric/acrocentric and acrocentric/ acrocentric. A similar polymorphism was described for hopkinsoni. The banding shows that the variation of the morphology of the X chromosome in Tatera is related to a pericentric inversion.     Long-term impact of Global Health educational experiences in Rome. An attempt of measurement

    Background Global health education (GHE) is spreading in Europe and in other parts of the world. Since 2008, Sapienza University of Rome has offered activities to medical and other health profession students related to global health (GH), which is grounded in the theory of social determinants of health and inspired by social justice. The educational activities included elective courses as well as community and service-learning experiences, referred to as GH gyms. This study attempts to measure the long-term impact of these educational experiences, especially to demonstrate their influence on the perceived social responsibility of future health professionals. Methods A questionnaire was elaborated and tested on a small sample of participants. It was sent to participants by e-mail. Quantitative results were analysed through descriptive statistics and qualitative answers were carefully read and classified. Results A total of 758 students from different faculties took part to the educational experiences. Only 488 e-mail addresses were available. One hundred and five (21.5%) questionnaires were returned. Participation in GH gyms was perceived to have had a higher influence on future professional and personal choices, when compared to participation in elective GH courses. Conclusions The study shows that consideration of health and social issues related with inequities in health and the use of interactive teaching methodologies had important effects on social responsibility of a large number of students. As there could be a selection bias among respondents, more research is needed to understand the impact of GH educational experiences. The inclusion of global health education in health and social curricula and the use of interactive methodologies with a correct evaluation of results are the indications that emerge from this research, together with the necessity of a strong involvement of students, professors and the whole academic reality
