Bill Viola’s 'Nantes Triptych': Unearthing the sources of its condensed temporality

In this text we intend to analyze Bill Viola’s video installation Nantes Triptych (1992) as an example of the richness which lies in the liminal spaces between arts. We defend the thesis that the utilization of the traditional pictorial structure of the triptych in this particular work, along with the powerful audiovisual material, renders a kairological event available to the viewer. This temporal experience makes possible an existential experience when in front of this video installation. To discuss this assumption we will use classical art theory texts about the triptychs, as well as, among others, Deleuze’s texts about time image and the triptych structure, Agamben’s concept of kairos, the concept of kairological artwork coined by David Chan and the philosophy of temporality developed by Merleau-Ponty

The traditional subject of death in the preschool classroom: an analysis of picture books

Linking Space: a Transit Oriented Design

    Get PDF
I propose to impact change for people and planet by architecting a community within a dense living space that is sustainable by means of public transportation that would enable travel to all essential activities as well as many leisurely places, events, stores, shopping centers and theaters. The carefully planned and architected ecosystem would blend commodities of life with dense living spaces to provide a self- sustaining community within a city. People who work outside of the ecosystem could utilize it by connecting through branches of the public transportation system. People who live within the ecosystem could depend on various means to get around without having to own a car. The ultimate goal would be to reduce the need for individual vehicles for transportation. The architectural purpose of this project is to provoke a cohesive relationship between people, how they move and how they live by integrating more attractive options for public transportation. The project will be a transparent architecture that through form and materiality allows for maximum function. The architecture will inspire a new way of life for people that is healthier and easier and more affordable. It will encourage investment in public transit as it becomes popular, dependable and central to life

Obsessed with obsessions: design for obsession

Taking the notion of obsessions as the starting point for my thesis, I decided to investigate the daily rituals undertaken by a select group of people. I engaged myself in others’ idiosyncrasies, and found myself empathizing with their needs and desires. I found it fascinating how our obsessions vary so considerably. Yet, at the same time, I realized that each of the obsessions I explored was comparable in that the qualities that defined each obsession were essentially the same. My thesis uses the obsession of Squeegee Girl as an example with which to demonstrate my personal concept of design. For me, designing is focused on individual needs, and a designer takes on the role of a storyteller. These two ideas are at the center of my thesis, and I use them to explore the case studies featured, as well as the design profession at large. Designing for a user’s individual needs is the practice of empathizing with users and treating them as a unique person rather than a general public. I believe that it is a designer’s job is to make our clients feel as though they are being carefully listened to and, ultimately, very satisfied. Thinking about the designer as storyteller is an idea that I developed during the process of researching case studies. I realized that, depending on what I am designing, and for whom, the narratives around a product are often far more important, and compelling, than the product itself. My thesis makes an argument for this notion. The products became irrelevant the moment I finished my thesis. However, the story behind each object was established at the moment I started investigating the user’s interest in it, and that story became stronger and more enticing as the tangible object was separated from the object’s narrative. Like the people I interviewed for my project, I am very particular about things, understanding what it is like to become fixated with desiring a certain quality or experience or aesthetic. The clients I am interested to design for are those like me, who value the same properties in an object or are clear about requiring a specific kind of experience. Through my designs, I want to celebrate the feeling of desiring something very strongly. To me, obsessions make our lives happy and fulfilling

Optical Transmittance Maximization in Superior Performance Tunnel Junctions for Very High Concentration Applications.

The light transmission through a tunnel junction in a multijunction solar cell depends on the optical properties and thickness of the whole solar cell layers stack, which configure the light absorption, reflection and interference processes taking place inside the semiconductor structure. In this paper the focus is put on the AlGaAs barrier layers of p++AlGaAs/n++GaAs and p++AlGaAs/n++GaInP tunnel junctions inserted into a GaInP/GaAs dualjunction solar cell. The aim is to analyze the effect of the thickness and Al-composition of these barrier layers on the light transmittance of the tunnel junction, using the bottom cell Jsc as the merit figure to appraise it. An intricate relation between this Jsc and the barrier layers parameters, caused by interferential reflectance, was observed. The importance of an appropriate optical design of the semiconductor structure was corroborated by a non-negligible gain in the bottom cell Jsc when choosing the appropriate barrier layers Al-compositions and thicknesses from a range of practical values for which the optical absorption is not the main contributor to the optical losses
