Continuous Interaction with a Virtual Human
Attentive Speaking and Active Listening require that a Virtual Human be capable of simultaneous perception/interpretation and production of communicative behavior. A Virtual Human should be able to signal its attitude and attention while it is listening to its interaction partner, and be able to attend to its interaction partner while it is speaking – and modify its communicative behavior on-the-fly based on what it perceives from its partner. This report presents the results of a four week summer project that was part of eNTERFACE’10. The project resulted in progress on several aspects of continuous interaction such as scheduling and interrupting multimodal behavior, automatic classification of listener responses, generation of response eliciting behavior, and models for appropriate reactions to listener responses. Utilising Spontaneous Conversational Speech in HMM-Based Speech Synthesis
Spontaneous conversational speech has many characteristics that are currently not well modelled in unit selection and HMM-based speech synthesis. But in order to build synthetic voices more suitable for interaction we need data that exhibits more conversational characteristics than the generally used read aloud sentences. In this paper we will show how carefully selected utterances from a spontaneous conversation was instrumental for building an HMM-based synthetic voices with more natural sounding conversational characteristics than a voice based on carefully read aloud sentences. We also investigated a style blending technique as a solution to the inherent problem of phonetic coverage in spontaneous speech data. But the lack of an appropriate representation of spontaneous speech phenomena probably contributed to results showing that we could not yet compete with the speech quality achieved for grammatical sentences
Continuous expressive speaking styles synthesis based on CVSM and MR-HMM
This paper introduces a continuous system capable of automatically producing the most adequate speaking style to synthesize a desired target text. This is done thanks to a joint modeling of the acoustic and lexical parameters of the speaker models by adapting the CVSM projection of the training texts using MR-HMM techniques. As such, we consider that as long as sufficient variety in the training data is available, we should be able to model a continuous lexical space into a continuous acoustic space. The proposed continuous automatic text to speech system was evaluated by means of a perceptual evaluation in order to compare them with traditional approaches to the task. The system proved to be capable of conveying the correct expressiveness (average adequacy of 3.6) with an expressive strength comparable to oracle traditional expressive speech synthesis (average of 3.6) although with a drop in speech quality mainly due to the semi-continuous nature of the data (average quality of 2.9). This means that the proposed system is capable of improving traditional neutral systems without requiring any additional user interaction
Detecting User Engagement in Everyday Conversations
This paper presents a novel application of speech emotion recognition:
estimation of the level of conversational engagement between users of a voice
communication system. We begin by using machine learning techniques, such as
the support vector machine (SVM), to classify users' emotions as expressed in
individual utterances. However, this alone fails to model the temporal and
interactive aspects of conversational engagement. We therefore propose the use
of a multilevel structure based on coupled hidden Markov models (HMM) to
estimate engagement levels in continuous natural speech. The first level is
comprised of SVM-based classifiers that recognize emotional states, which could
be (e.g.) discrete emotion types or arousal/valence levels. A high-level HMM
then uses these emotional states as input, estimating users' engagement in
conversation by decoding the internal states of the HMM. We report experimental
results obtained by applying our algorithms to the LDC Emotional Prosody and

The listening talker: A review of human and algorithmic context-induced modifications of speech
International audienceSpeech output technology is finding widespread application, including in scenarios where intelligibility might be compromised - at least for some listeners - by adverse conditions. Unlike most current algorithms, talkers continually adapt their speech patterns as a response to the immediate context of spoken communication, where the type of interlocutor and the environment are the dominant situational factors influencing speech production. Observations of talker behaviour can motivate the design of more robust speech output algorithms. Starting with a listener-oriented categorisation of possible goals for speech modification, this review article summarises the extensive set of behavioural findings related to human speech modification, identifies which factors appear to be beneficial, and goes on to examine previous computational attempts to improve intelligibility in noise. The review concludes by tabulating 46 speech modifications, many of which have yet to be perceptually or algorithmically evaluated. Consequently, the review provides a roadmap for future work in improving the robustness of speech output
