Aviation English Training for Native English Speakers: Challenges and Suggestions

While non-native English Speakers (NNES) are trained in aviation communication and they must attain a certain English proficiency level before being awarded an aeronautical licence, native English speakers (NES) are not in practice subject to the same requirements. This paper discusses some of the issues posed by NES not following the standard aviation phraseology and examines the English Language Proficiency and radiotelephony requirements for NES in English speaking countries. The recommendations of ICAO (2010) concerning the responsibilities of NES are rarely implemented. Practical suggestions for the training of NES were made by participants of the 2018 ICAEA workshop and are augmented with suggestions coming from flight training experience. The main recommendation is for mandatory training and testing of aviation phraseology and communication procedures for NES pilots and Air Traffic Controllers. Training should include language awareness and testing should include understanding of NNES transmissions and production of transmissions intelligible by NNES

Intoxicación por plomo en un ternero de la zona minera de Sierra Madrona y el Valle de Alcudia

[EN]: We notify the first reported case of lead (Pb) poisoning in a calf from the old mining district of Sierra Madrona and Alcudia Valley (Spain), which appeared in a farm with visible signs of historic mining activity in the surrounding land. The blood Pb level found in this calf was 311 μg/dL, and was associated to several symptoms of clinical Pb poisoning, including severe paralysis, loss of sensitivity from hip to the hind legs and incoordination. Soils, plants and water points inside the farm showed Pb levels above the threshold values to be classified as highly polluted soils, toxic pastures for livestock and non-potable water for humans. This report indicates that Pb pollution denotes a health risk for cattle reared in the mining area of Sierra Madrona and Alcudia Valley.[ES]: Se notifica el primer caso registrado de intoxicación por plomo (Pb) en un ternero del antiguo distrito minero de Sierra Madrona y el Valle de Alcudia (España), que apareció en una finca ganadera con restos visibles de antiguas actividades mineras en los terrenos circundantes. El nivel de Pb en sangre detectado en el animal fue de 311 μg/dL, y estuvo asociado a diversos síntomas de intoxicación clínica por Pb, que incluyen parálisis severa, pérdida de sensibilidad en los cuartos traseros e incoordinación. Los suelos, las plantas y los puntos de agua presentes en la finca mostraron niveles de Pb por encima de los valores umbral, siendo considerados como suelos altamente contaminados, pastos tóxicos para el ganado y agua no potable para el consumo humano. Une typologie des intérêts et valeurs accordés aux clichés d’imagerie médicale par les patients atteints d’un cancer

This article aims to analyze the contribution of the display of pictures of medical imaging in the course of therapeutic cancer patients. It evokes the relationship patient/doctor and more precisely how certain variables determine this relation. Through the construction of a typology of interest that patients give their pictures, it will study the profiles of patients for whom the display is desired. The article will address, particularly, how the display of pictures occurs within the patient/doctor, but also the question of perception of the body.Cet article vise à analyser l’apport de la visualisation des clichés d’imagerie médicale dans le parcours thérapeutique des patients atteints d’un cancer. Il évoque la relation patient/médecin et plus précisément la manière dont certaines variables sociales la déterminent. A travers la construction d’une typologie des intérêts que les patients accordent à leurs clichés, il s’agira d’étudier les profils de patients pour qui la visualisation est souhaitée. Nouveaux enjeux ou continuité historique ?

Les musiques cubaines ont sans doute été, bien avant le phénomène de la « world music », parmi les premières musiques du monde à être exportées dans les pays industriels. D’une immense richesse, ces musiques puisent une part essentielle de leurs sources dans les formes afrocubaines caractérisées par l’association du chant antiphonal, les percussions et la danse. Nous tentons de montrer que pour ces formes, les « nouveaux enjeux » s’inscrivent en fait dans une continuité historique dont certains éléments fondamentaux ont été posés dès le xvie siècle : musiques urbaines, musiques exportées, musiques métissées jouées par des musiciens professionnels éclectiques, les formes afrocubaines sont à replacer dans le contexte d’une histoire à long terme. Puis nous nous attachons à décrire les évolutions contemporaines d’un genre profane emblématique de La Havane, la rumba, dans le contexte politique et économique d’aujourd’hui. Enfin, dans le prolongement des phénomènes d’« aller et retour » entre l’Europe et l’Amérique, nous abordons brièvement le phénomène des percussionistes européens qui viennent apprendre ou se perfectionner auprès de maîtres cubains.Well before the ‘world music’ phenomenon, Cuban music was undoubtedly among the first to be exported to the industrialised world. Of immense wealth, Cuban music draws most of its sources from Afro-Cuban forms of music characterised by the antiphonal singing, percussion and dance. We attempt to show here, that for these different forms, what is characterised as a ‘new direction’ is part of what is in fact historical continuity of which some basic elements were present as early as the 16th Century: urban music, exported music, ‘multicultural’ music played by eclectic professional musicians, Afro-Cuban musical variety should be placed in a long term historical context. Furthermore, we attempt to describe the latter-day development of a profane genre of music emblematic of Havana, the Rumba, and to place it within today’s economic political and economic context. Lastly, in keeping with the long tradition of comings and goings between Europe and America, we take a brief look at the phenomenon of European percussionists who go to learn or perfect their craft with Cuban masters
