    Polarimetric properties of indoor MIMO channels for different floor levels in a residential house

    This paper analyzes polarimetric characteristics of power delay profiles (PDPs), cross polarization discrimination (XPD), and received power of specular and diffuse multipath components of indoor MIMO radio channels at 2.45 GHz. Measurements were done in a residential house at two floors levels: "same floor" and "cross floor". Variations of 5 to 15 dB in PDPs between co-and cross-polar links were found in the same floor level; however these changes decrease as radio links move from line-of-sight to non-line-of-sight propagations. XPDs of radio waves were found to be higher for cross floor configuration, about 5 dB in horizontally and 7 dB in vertically polarized waves. Also, diffuse components of channels were less affected compared to that of specular components in same floor setups for cross-polar links. Our results demonstrate that the contribution of diffuse components to total channel power is higher than previously presented studies for large industrial indoor environments

    Experimental study of depolarization and antenna correlation in tunnels in the 1.3 GHz band

    Measurements have been carried out in a low-traffic road tunnel to investigate the influence of the polarization of the transmitting and receiving antennas on the channel characteristics. A real-time channel sounder working in a frequency band around 1.3 GHz has been used, the elements of the transmitting and receiving arrays being dual-polarized patch antennas. Special emphasis is made on cross-polarization discrimination factor and on the spatial correlation between array elements which has a great influence on the performances of transmit/receive diversity schemes. Various polarizations both at the transmitter and the receiver have been tested to minimize this spatial correlation while keeping the size of the array as small as possible

    Experimental investigation of V2I radio channel in an arched tunnel

    This paper describes the results of the experimental radio channel sounding campaign performed in an arched road tunnel in Le Havre, France. The co-polar and cross-polar channels measurements are carried out in the closed side lane, while the lane along the center of the tunnel is open to traffic. We investigate the channel characteristics in terms of: path loss, fading distribution, polarization power ratios and delay spread. All these parameters are essential for the deployment of vehicular communication systems inside tunnels. Our results indicate that, while the H-polar channel gain attenuates slower than the V-polar channel due to the geometry of the tunnel, the mean delay spread of the H-polar channel is larger than that of the V-polar channel

    International audienceThe flowfield around the rotor blades of a wind turbine may be quite complex due to the occurrence of several aerodynamic phenomena. It is all the more true for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT), for which the six rigid-body motions of the floating platform can induce blade/wake interactions. Therefore conventional numerical approaches for wind turbine applications, such as BEM, may be questionable for an accurate prediction of floating wind turbine aerodynamic loads. Consequently, the current paper investigates the aerodynamic behavior of a FOWT subjected to several prescribed motions, representative of a wave movement, based on CFD simulations. These results, obtained on the NREL 5-MW wind turbine, are compared to previous results found in the literature and analyzed to provide a better understanding of the involved aerodynamic phenomena

    Simulation of ion behavior in an open three-dimensional Paul trap using a power series method

    Simulations of the dynamics of ions trapped in a Paul trap with terms in the potential up to the order 10 have been carried out. The power series method is used to solve numerically the equations of motion of the ions. The stability diagram has been studied and the buffer gas cooling has been implemented by a Monte Carlo method. The dipole excitation was also included. The method has been applied to an existing trap and it has shown good agreement with the experimental results and previous simulations using other methods

    Channel correlation-based approach for feedback overhead reduction in massive MIMO

    For frequency-division duplex multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the channel state information at the transmitter is usually obtained by sending pilots or reference signals from all elements of the antenna array. The channel is then estimated by the receiver and communicated back to the transmitter. However, for massive MIMO, this periodical estimation of the full transfer matrix can lead to prohibitive overhead. To reduce the amount of data, we propose to estimate the updated channel matrix from the knowledge of the full correlation matrix at the transmitter made during some initialization time and the instantaneous measured channel matrix of smaller size, characterizing the link between the user and a limited number of reference array elements. The proposed algorithm is validated with measured massive MIMO channel transfer functions at 3.5GHz between a 9×99 \times 9 uniform rectangular array and different user positions. Since measurements were made in static conditions, the criteria chosen for evaluating the performance of the algorithm are based on a comparison of the predicted channel capacity calculated from either the measured or estimated channel matrix

    A Novel Communication and Radar System for Underground Railway Applications

    A system allowing data to be exchanged between two successive trains in a tunnel, while simultaneously measuring the distance between them, would help to optimize train traffic in very long tunnels, without lowering safety standards. A study including both theoretical and experimental phases was conducted to design and optimize such a system and focused on the Channel Tunnel, between France and England, where a minimum range of 5 km is necessary for operational use. A prototype, operating at 2.45 GHz and based on this new concept, produced successful results. Given that this technique would also be useful in any underground rail system, particularly those that are automated, the prototype was also tested on subway lines, in Lille and Paris

    Estrella lausannensis, a new star in the Chlamydiales order.

    Originally, the Chlamydiales order was represented by a single family, the Chlamydiaceae, composed of several pathogens, such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus. Recently, 6 new families of Chlamydia-related bacteria have been added to the Chlamydiales order. Most of these obligate intracellular bacteria are able to replicate in free-living amoebae. Amoebal co-culture may be used to selectively isolate amoeba-resisting bacteria. This method allowed in a previous work to discover strain CRIB 30, from an environmental water sample. Based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Criblamydia sequanensis, strain CRIB 30 was considered as a new member of the Criblamydiaceae family. In the present work, phylogenetic analyses of the genes gyrA, gyrB, rpoA, rpoB, secY, topA and 23S rRNA as well as MALDI-TOF MS confirmed the taxonomic classification of strain CRIB 30. Morphological examination revealed peculiar star-shaped elementary bodies (EBs) similar to those of C. sequanensis. Therefore, this new strain was called "Estrella lausannensis". Finally, E. lausannensis showed a large amoebal host range and a very efficient replication rate in Acanthamoeba species. Furthermore, E. lausannensis is the first member of the Chlamydiales order to grow successfully in the genetically tractable Dictyostelium discoideum, which opens new perspectives in the study of chlamydial biology
