    Evolutionary multi-objective optimization for gating and riser system design of metal castings

    The gating and riser system design plays an important role in the quality and cost of a metal casting. Due to the lack of existing theoretical procedures to follow, the design process is carried out on a trial-and-error basis. The casting design optimization problem is characterized by multiple design variables, conflicting objectives, and a complex search space, making it unsuitable for sensitivity-based optimization. In this study, a formal optimization method using evolutionary techniques was developed to overcome such complexities. A framework for integrating the optimization procedure with numerical simulation for the design evaluation is presented. The comparison between a scalar and vector optimization approach was explored using the weighted-sum and multi-objective Genetic Algorithm methods. The proposed optimization framework was applied to the gating and riser system of a sand casting and the results were compared to a popular Design-of-Experiment (DOE) method. It showed that the multi-objective method gave better results and provided more flexibility in decision making

    Controller tuning by means of evolutionary multiobjective optimization: current trends and applications

    Control engineering problems are generally multi-objective problems; meaning that there are several specifications and requirements that must be fulfilled. A traditional approach for calculating a solution with the desired trade-off is to define an optimisation statement. Multi-objective optimisation techniques deal with this problem from a particular perspective and search for a set of potentially preferable solutions; the designer may then analyse the trade-offs among them, and select the best solution according to his/her preferences. In this paper, this design procedure based on evolutionary multiobjective optimisation (EMO) is presented and significant applications on controller tuning are discussed. Throughout this paper it is noticeable that EMO research has been developing towards different optimisation statements, but these statements are not commonly used in controller tuning.     Initialization of a Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms Knowledge Acquisition System for Renewable Energy Power Plants

    pp. 185-204The design of Renewable Energy Power Plants (REPPs) is crucial not only for the investments' performance and attractiveness measures, but also for the maximization of resource (source) usage (e.g. sun, water, and wind) and the minimization of raw materials (e.g. aluminum: Al, cadmium: Cd, iron: Fe, silicon: Si, and tellurium: Te) consumption. Hence, several appropriate and satisfactory Multi-objective Problems (MOPs) are mandatory during the REPPs' design phases. MOPs related tasks can only be managed by very well organized knowledge acquisition on all REPPs' design equations and models. The proposed MOPs need to be solved with one or more multiobjective algorithm, such as Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs). In this respect, the first aim of this research study is to start gathering knowledge on the REPPs' MOPs. The second aim of this study is to gather detailed information about all MOEAs and available free software tools for their development. The main contribution of this research is the initialization of a proposed multi-objective evolutionary algorithm knowledge acquisition system for renewable energy power plants (MOEAs-KAS-FREPPs) (research and development loopwise process: develop, train, validate, improve, test, improve, operate, and improve). As a simple representative example of this knowledge acquisition system research with two selective and elective proposed standard objectives (as test objectives) and eight selective and elective proposed standard constraints (as test constraints) are generated and applied as a standardized MOP for a virtual small hydropower plant design and investment. The maximization of energy generation (MWh) and the minimization of initial investment cost (million €) are achieved by the Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), the Niched Sharing Genetic Algorithm/Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-I), and the NSGA-II algorithms in the Scilab 6.0.0 as only three standardized MOEAs amongst all proposed standardized MOEAs on two desktop computer configurations (Windows 10 Home 1709 64 bits, Intel i5-7200 CPU @ 2.7 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM with internet connection and Windows 10 Pro, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz, 6,00 GB RAM with internet connection). The algorithm run-times (computation time) of the current applications vary between 20.64 and 59.98 seconds.S

    System Architecture Design Using Multi-Criteria Optimization

    System architecture is defined as the description of a complex system in terms of its functional requirements, physical elements and their interrelationships. Designing a complex system architecture can be a difficult task involving multi-faceted trade-off decisions. The system architecture designs often have many project-specific goals involving mix of quantitative and qualitative criteria and a large design trade space. Several tools and methods have been developed to support the system architecture design process in the last few decades. However, many conventional problem solving techniques face difficulties in dealing with complex system design problems having many goals. In this research work, an interactive multi-criteria design optimization framework is proposed for solving many-objective system architecture design problems and generating a well distributed set of Pareto optimal solutions for these problems. System architecture design using multi-criteria optimization is demonstrated using a real-world application of an aero engine health management (EHM) system. A design process is presented for the optimal deployment of the EHM system functional operations over physical architecture subsystems. The EHM system architecture design problem is formulated as a multi-criteria optimization problem. The proposed methodology successfully generates a well distributed family of Pareto optimal architecture solutions for the EHM system, which provides valuable insights into the design trade-offs. Uncertainty analysis is implemented using an efficient polynomial chaos approach and robust architecture solutions are obtained for the EHM system architecture design. Performance assessment through evaluation of benchmark test metrics demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed methodology

    Multiobjective Design Optimization Of Gas Turbine Blade With Emphasis On Internal Cooling

    In the design of mechanical components, numerical simulations and experimental methods are commonly used for design creation (or modification) and design optimization. However, a major challenge of using simulation and experimental methods is that they are timeconsuming and often cost-prohibitive for the designer. In addition, the simultaneous interactions between aerodynamic, thermodynamic and mechanical integrity objectives for a particular component or set of components are difficult to accurately characterize, even with the existing simulation tools and experimental methods. The current research and practice of using numerical simulations and experimental methods do little to address the simultaneous “satisficing” of multiple and often conflicting design objectives that influence the performance and geometry of a component. This is particularly the case for gas turbine systems that involve a large number of complex components with complicated geometries. Numerous experimental and numerical studies have demonstrated success in generating effective designs for mechanical components; however, their focus has been primarily on optimizing a single design objective based on a limited set of design variables and associated values. In this research, a multiobjective design optimization framework to solve a set of userspecified design objective functions for mechanical components is proposed. The framework integrates a numerical simulation and a nature-inspired optimization procedure that iteratively perturbs a set of design variables eventually converging to a set of tradeoff design solutions. In this research, a gas turbine engine system is used as the test application for the proposed framework. More specifically, the optimization of the gas turbine blade internal cooling channel configuration is performed. This test application is quite relevant as gas turbine engines serve a iv critical role in the design of the next-generation power generation facilities around the world. Furthermore, turbine blades require better cooling techniques to increase their cooling effectiveness to cope with the increase in engine operating temperatures extending the useful life of the blades. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated via a computational study, where a set of common, real-world design objectives and a set of design variables that directly influence the set of objectives are considered. Specifically, three objectives are considered in this study: (1) cooling channel heat transfer coefficient, which measures the rate of heat transfer and the goal is to maximize this value; (2) cooling channel air pressure drop, where the goal is to minimize this value; and (3) cooling channel geometry, specifically the cooling channel cavity area, where the goal is to maximize this value. These objectives, which are conflicting, directly influence the cooling effectiveness of a gas turbine blade and the material usage in its design. The computational results show the proposed optimization framework is able to generate, evaluate and identify thousands of competitive tradeoff designs in a fraction of the time that it would take designers using the traditional simulation tools and experimental methods commonly used for mechanical component design generation. This is a significant step beyond the current research and applications of design optimization to gas turbine blades, specifically, and to mechanical components, in general

    Many-Objective Hybrid Optimization Under Uncertainty With Applications

    A novel method for solving many-objective optimization problems under uncertainty was developed. It is well known that no single optimization algorithm performs best for all problems. Therefore, the developed method, a many-objective hybrid optimizer (MOHO), uses five constitutive algorithms and actively switches between them throughout the optimization process allowing for robust optimization. MOHO monitors the progress made by each of the five algorithms and allows the best performing algorithm more attempts at finding the optimum. This removes the need for user input for selecting algorithm as the best performing algorithm is automatically selected thereby increasing the probability of converging to the optimum. An uncertainty quantification framework, based on sparse polynomial chaos expansion, to propagate the uncertainties in the input parameter to the objective functions was also developed and validated. Where the samples and analysis runs needed for standard polynomial chaos expansion increases exponentially with the dimensionality, the presented sparse polynomial chaos approach efficiently propagates the uncertainty with only a few samples, thereby greatly reducing the computational cost. The performance of MOHO was investigated on a total of 65 analytical test problems from the DTLZ and WFG test suite, for which the analytical solution is known. MOHO is also applied to two additional real-life cases of aerodynamic shape design of subsonic and hypersonic bodies. Aerodynamic shape optimization is often computationally expensive and is, therefore, a good test case to investigate MOHO`s ability to reduce the computational time through robust optimization and accelerated convergence. The subsonic design optimization had three objectives: maximize lift and minimize drag and moment. The hypersonic design optimization had two objectives: maximize volume and minimize drag. Two accelerated solvers based on fast multipole method and Newton impact theory are developed for simulating subsonic and hypersonic flows. The results show that MOHO performed, on average, better than all five remaining algorithms in 52% of the DTLZ+WFG problems. The results of robust optimization of a subsonic body and hypersonic bodies were in good agreement with theory. The MOHO developed is capable of solving many-objective, multi-objective and single objective, constrained and unconstrained optimization problems with and without uncertainty with little user input

This approach gives control engineers greater flexibility to select a controller that matches their specifications. Furthermore, for a given controller it is simple to analyze the tradeoff achieved between conflicting objectives. By using the multi-objective design technique it is also possible to perform a global comparison between different control strategies in a simple and robust way. This approach thereby enables an analysis to be made of whether a preference for a certain control technique is justified.     Explicit Building Block Multiobjective Evolutionary Computation: Methods and Applications

    This dissertation presents principles, techniques, and performance of evolutionary computation optimization methods. Concentration is on concepts, design formulation, and prescription for multiobjective problem solving and explicit building block (BB) multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). Current state-of-the-art explicit BB MOEAs are addressed in the innovative design, execution, and testing of a new multiobjective explicit BB MOEA. Evolutionary computation concepts examined are algorithm convergence, population diversity and sizing, genotype and phenotype partitioning, archiving, BB concepts, parallel evolutionary algorithm (EA) models, robustness, visualization of evolutionary process, and performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. The main result of this research is the development of a more robust algorithm where MOEA concepts are implicitly employed. Testing shows that the new MOEA can be more effective and efficient than previous state-of-the-art explicit BB MOEAs for selected test suite multiobjective optimization problems (MOPs) and U.S. Air Force applications. Other contributions include the extension of explicit BB definitions to clarify the meanings for good single and multiobjective BBs. A new visualization technique is developed for viewing genotype, phenotype, and the evolutionary process in finding Pareto front vectors while tracking the size of the BBs. The visualization technique is the result of a BB tracing mechanism integrated into the new MOEA that enables one to determine the required BB sizes and assign an approximation epistasis level for solving a particular problem. The culmination of this research is explicit BB state-of-the-art MOEA technology based on the MOEA design, BB classifier type assessment, solution evolution visualization, and insight into MOEA test metric validation and usage as applied to test suite, deception, bioinformatics, unmanned vehicle flight pattern, and digital symbol set design MOPs

    Development of a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on lichtenberg figures

    This doctoral dissertation presents the most important concepts of multi-objective optimization and a systematic review of the most cited articles in the last years of this subject in mechanical engineering. The State of the Art shows a trend towards the use of metaheuristics and the use of a posteriori decision-making techniques to solve engineering problems. This fact increases the demand for algorithms, which compete to deliver the most accurate answers at the lowest possible computational cost. In this context, a new hybrid multi-objective metaheuristic inspired by lightning and Linchtenberg Figures is proposed. The Multi-objective Lichtenberg Algorithm (MOLA) is tested using complex test functions and explicit contrainted engineering problems and compared with other metaheuristics. MOLA outperformed the most used algorithms in the literature: NSGA-II, MOPSO, MOEA/D, MOGWO, and MOGOA. After initial validation, it was applied to two complex and impossible to be analytically evaluated problems. The first was a design case: the multi-objective optimization of CFRP isogrid tubes using the finite element method. The optimizations were made considering two methodologies: i) using a metamodel, and ii) the finite element updating. The last proved to be the best methodology, finding solutions that reduced at least 45.69% of the mass, 18.4% of the instability coefficient, 61.76% of the Tsai-Wu failure index and increased by at least 52.57% the natural frequency. In the second application, MOLA was internally modified and associated with feature selection techniques to become the Multi-objective Sensor Selection and Placement Optimization based on the Lichtenberg Algorithm (MOSSPOLA), an unprecedented Sensor Placement Optimization (SPO) algorithm that maximizes the acquired modal response and minimizes the number of sensors for any structure. Although this is a structural health monitoring principle, it has never been done before. MOSSPOLA was applied to a real helicopter’s main rotor blade using the 7 best-known metrics in SPO. Pareto fronts and sensor configurations were unprecedentedly generated and compared. Better sensor distributions were associated with higher hypervolume and the algorithm found a sensor configuration for each sensor number and metric, including one with 100% accuracy in identifying delamination considering triaxial modal displacements, minimum number of sensors, and noise for all blade sections.Esta tese de doutorado traz os conceitos mais importantes de otimização multi-objetivo e uma revisão sistemática dos artigos mais citados nos últimos anos deste tema em engenharia mecânica. O estado da arte mostra uma tendência no uso de meta-heurísticas e de técnicas de tomada de decisão a posteriori para resolver problemas de engenharia. Este fato aumenta a demanda sobre os algoritmos, que competem para entregar respostas mais precisas com o menor custo computacional possível. Nesse contexto, é proposta uma nova meta-heurística híbrida multi-objetivo inspirada em raios e Figuras de Lichtenberg. O Algoritmo de Lichtenberg Multi-objetivo (MOLA) é testado e comparado com outras metaheurísticas usando funções de teste complexas e problemas restritos e explícitos de engenharia. Ele superou os algoritmos mais utilizados na literatura: NSGA-II, MOPSO, MOEA/D, MOGWO e MOGOA. Após validação, foi aplicado em dois problemas complexos e impossíveis de serem analiticamente otimizados. O primeiro foi um caso de projeto: otimização multi-objetivo de tubos isogrid CFRP usando o método dos elementos finitos. As otimizações foram feitas considerando duas metodologias: i) usando um meta-modelo, e ii) atualização por elementos finitos. A última provou ser a melhor metodologia, encontrando soluções que reduziram pelo menos 45,69% da massa, 18,4% do coeficiente de instabilidade, 61,76% do TW e aumentaram em pelo menos 52,57% a frequência natural. Na segunda aplicação, MOLA foi modificado internamente e associado a técnicas de feature selection para se tornar o Seleção e Alocação ótima de Sensores Multi-objetivo baseado no Algoritmo de Lichtenberg (MOSSPOLA), um algoritmo inédito de Otimização de Posicionamento de Sensores (SPO) que maximiza a resposta modal adquirida e minimiza o número de sensores para qualquer estrutura. Embora isto seja um princípio de Monitoramento da Saúde Estrutural, nunca foi feito antes. O MOSSPOLA foi aplicado na pá do rotor principal de um helicóptero real usando as 7 métricas mais conhecidas em SPO. Frentes de Pareto e configurações de sensores foram ineditamente geradas e comparadas. Melhores distribuições de sensores foram associadas a um alto hipervolume e o algoritmo encontrou uma configuração de sensor para cada número de sensores e métrica, incluindo uma com 100% de precisão na identificação de delaminação considerando deslocamentos modais triaxiais, número mínimo de sensores e ruído para todas as seções da lâmina

    Multi-objective optimization of transonic airfoils using variable-fidelity models, co-kriging surrogates, and design space reduction

    Computationally efficient constrained multi-objective design optimization of transonic airfoils is considered. The proposed methodology focuses on fixed-lift design aimed at finding the best possible trade-offs between the conflicting objectives. The algorithm exploits the surrogate-based optimization principle, variable-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, as well as auxiliary approximation surrogates (here, using kriging). The kriging models constructed within a reduced design space. The optimization process has three major stages: (i) design space reduction which involves the identification of the extreme points of the Pareto front through single-objective optimization, (ii) construction of the kriging model and an initial Pareto front generation using multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, and (iii) Pareto front refinement using co-kriging models. For the sake of computational efficiency, stages (i) and (ii) are realized at the level of low-fidelity CFD models. The proposed algorithm is applied to the multi-objective optimization of a transonic airfoil at a Mach number of 0.734 and a fixed lift coefficient of 0.824. The shape is parameterized with eight B-spline control points. The fluid flow is taken to be inviscid. The high-fidelity model solves the compressible Euler equations. The low-fidelity model is the same as the high-fidelity one, but with a coarser description and is much faster to execute. With the proposed approach, the entire Pareto front of the drag coefficient and the pitching moment coefficient is obtained using 100 low-fidelity samples and 3 high-fidelity model samples. This cost is not only considerably lower (up to two orders of magnitude) than the cost of direct high-fidelity mode optimization using metaheuristics without design space reduction, but, more importantly, renders multi-objective optimization of transonic airfoil shapes computationally tractable, even at the level of accurate CFD models
