    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     Data-driven Soft Sensors in the Process Industry

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

    On-line estimation approaches to fault-tolerant control of uncertain systems

    This thesis is concerned with fault estimation in Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) and as such involves the joint problem of on-line estimation within an adaptive control system. The faults that are considered are significant uncertainties affecting the control variables of the process and their estimates are used in an adaptive control compensation mechanism. The approach taken involves the active FTC, as the faults can be considered as uncertainties affecting the control system. The engineering (application domain) challenges that are addressed are: (1) On-line model-based fault estimation and compensation as an FTC problem, for systems with large but bounded fault magnitudes and for which the faults can be considered as a special form of dynamic uncertainty. (2) Fault-tolerance in the distributed control of uncertain inter-connected systems The thesis also describes how challenge (1) can be used in the distributed control problem of challenge (2). The basic principle adopted throughout the work is that the controller has two components, one involving the nominal control action and the second acting as an adaptive compensation for significant uncertainties and fault effects. The fault effects are a form of uncertainty which is considered too large for the application of passive FTC methods. The thesis considers several approaches to robust control and estimation: augmented state observer (ASO); sliding mode control (SMC); sliding mode fault estimation via Sliding Mode Observer (SMO); linear parameter-varying (LPV) control; two-level distributed control with learning coordination

    Mountain building in Taiwan: A thermokinematic model

    The Taiwan mountain belt is classically viewed as a case example of a critical wedge growing essentially by frontal accretion and therefore submitted to distributed shortening. However, a number of observations call for a significant contribution of underplating to the growth of the orogenic wedge. We propose here a new thermokinematic model of the Taiwan mountain belt reconciling existing kinematic, thermometric and thermochronological constraints. In this model, shortening across the orogen is absorbed by slip on the most frontal faults of the foothills. Crustal thickening and exhumation are sustained by underplating beneath the easternmost portion of the wedge (Tananao Complex, TC), where the uplift rate is estimated to ~6.3 mm a^(−1), and beneath the westernmost internal region of the orogen (Hsueshan Range units, HR), where the uplift rate is estimated to ~4.2 mm a^(−1). Our model suggests that the TC units experienced a synchronous evolution along strike despite the southward propagation of the collision. It also indicates that they have reached a steady state in terms of cooling ages but not in terms of peak metamorphic temperatures. Exhumation of the HR units increases northward but has not yet reached an exhumational steady state. Presently, frontal accretion accounts for less than ~10% of the incoming flux of material into the orogen, although there is indication that it was contributing substantially more (~80%) before 4 Ma. The incoming flux of material accreted beneath the TC significantly increased 1.5 Ma ago. Our results also suggest that the flux of material accreted to the orogen corresponds to the top ~7 km of the upper crust of the underthrust Chinese margin. This indicates that a significant amount (~76%) of the underthrust material has been subducted into the mantle, probably because of the increase in density associated with metamorphism. We also show that the density distribution resulting from metamorphism within the orogenic wedge explains well the topography and the gravity field. By combining available geological data on the thermal and kinematic evolution of the wedge, our study sheds new light onto mountain building processes in Taiwan and allows for reappraising the initial structural architecture of the passive margin

    Decentralized sliding mode control and estimation for large-scale systems

    This thesis concerns the development of an approach of decentralised robust control and estimation for large scale systems (LSSs) using robust sliding mode control (SMC) and sliding mode observers (SMO) theory based on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. A complete theory of decentralized first order sliding mode theory is developed. The main developments proposed in this thesis are: The novel development of an LMI approach to decentralized state feedback SMC. The proposed strategy has good ability in combination with other robust methods to fulfill specific performance and robustness requirements. The development of output based SMC for large scale systems (LSSs). Three types of novel decentralized output feedback SMC methods have been developed using LMI design tools. In contrast to more conventional approaches to SMC design the use of some complicated transformations have been obviated. A decentralized approach to SMO theory has been developed focused on the Walcott-Żak SMO combined with LMI tools. A derivation for bounds applicable to the estimation error for decentralized systems has been given that involves unknown subsystem interactions and modeling uncertainty. Strategies for both actuator and sensor fault estimation using decentralized SMO are discussed.The thesis also provides a case study of the SMC and SMO concepts applied to a non-linear annealing furnace system modelderived from a distributed parameter (partial differential equation) thermal system. The study commences with a lumped system decentralised representation of the furnace derived from the partial differential equations. The SMO and SMC methods derived in the thesis are applied to this lumped parameter furnace model. Results are given demonstrating the validity of the methods proposed and showing a good potential for a valuable practical implementation of fault tolerant control based on furnace temperature sensor faults

    Fault Classification and Location Identification on Electrical Transmission Network Based on Machine Learning Methods

    Power transmission network is the most important link in the country’s energy system as they carry large amounts of power at high voltages from generators to substations. Modern power system is a complex network and requires high-speed, precise, and reliable protective system. Faults in power system are unavoidable and overhead transmission line faults are generally higher compare to other major components. They not only affect the reliability of the system but also cause widespread impact on the end users. Additionally, the complexity of protecting transmission line configurations increases with as the configurations get more complex. Therefore, prediction of faults (type and location) with high accuracy increases the operational stability and reliability of the power system and helps to avoid huge power failure. Furthermore, proper operation of the protective relays requires the correct determination of the fault type as quickly as possible (e.g., reclosing relays). With advent of smart grid, digital technology is implemented allowing deployment of sensors along the transmission lines which can collect live fault data as they contain useful information which can be used for analyzing disturbances that occur in transmission lines. In this thesis, application of machine learning algorithms for fault classification and location identification on the transmission line has been explored. They have ability to “learn” from the data without explicitly programmed and can independently adapt when exposed to new data. The work presented makes following contributions: 1) Two different architectures are proposed which adapts to any N-terminal in the transmission line. 2) The models proposed do not require large dataset or high sampling frequency. Additionally, they can be trained quickly and generalize well to the problem. 3) The first architecture is based off decision trees for its simplicity, easy visualization which have not been used earlier. Fault location method uses traveling wave-based approach for location of faults. The method is tested with performance better than expected accuracy and fault location error is less than ±1%. 4) The second architecture uses single support vector machine to classify ten types of shunt faults and Regression model for fault location which eliminates manual work. The architecture was tested on real data and has proven to be better than first architecture. The regression model has fault location error less than ±1% for both three and two terminals. 5) Both the architectures are tested on real fault data which gives a substantial evidence of its application

    A self-validating control system based approach to plant fault detection and diagnosis

    An approach is proposed in which fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tasks are distributed to separate FDD modules associated with each control system located throughout a plant. Intended specifically for those control systems that inherently eliminate steady state error, it is modular, steady state based, requires very little process specific information and therefore should be attractive to control systems implementers who seek economies of scale. The approach is applicable to virtually all types of process plant, whether they are open loop stable or not, have a type or class number of zero or not and so on. Based on qualitative reasoning, the approach is founded on the application of control systems theory to single and cascade control systems with integral action. This results in the derivation of cause-effect knowledge and fault isolation procedures that take into account factors like interactions between control systems, and the availability of non-control-loop-based sensors

    Fault tolerant control for nonlinear aircraft based on feedback linearization

    The thesis concerns the fault tolerant flight control (FTFC) problem for nonlinear aircraft by making use of analytical redundancy. Considering initially fault-free flight, the feedback linearization theory plays an important role to provide a baseline control approach for de-coupling and stabilizing a non-linear statically unstable aircraft system. Then several reconfigurable control strategies are studied to provide further robust control performance:- A neural network (NN)-based adaption mechanism is used to develop reconfigurable FTFC performance through the combination of a concurrent updated learninglaw. - The combined feedback linearization and NN adaptor FTFC system is further improved through the use of a sliding mode control (SMC) strategy to enhance the convergence of the NN learning adaptor. - An approach to simultaneous estimation of both state and fault signals is incorporated within an active FTFC system.The faults acting independently on the three primary actuators of the nonlinear aircraft are compensated in the control system.The theoretical ideas developed in the thesis have been applied to the nonlinear Machan Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system. The simulation results obtained from a tracking control system demonstrate the improved fault tolerant performance for all the presented control schemes, validated under various faults and disturbance scenarios.A Boeing 747 nonlinear benchmark model, developed within the framework of the GARTEUR FM-AG 16 project “fault tolerant flight control systems”,is used for the purpose of further simulation study and testing of the FTFC scheme developed by making the combined use of concurrent learning NN and SMC theory. The simulation results under the given fault scenario show a promising reconfiguration performance
