Parton Distributions in the Valon Model
The parton distribution functions determined by CTEQ at low are used as
inputs to test the validity of the valon model. The valon distributions in a
nucleon are first found to be nearly independent. The parton distribution
in a valon are shown to be consistent with being universal, independent of the
valon type. The momentum fractions of the partons in the valon add up
separately to one. These properties affirm the validity of the valon model. The
various distributions are parameterized for convenient application of the

Description of inclusive scattering of 4.045 GeV electrons from D
We exploit a relationship between the Structure Functions of nucleons, the
physical deuteron and of a deuteron, composed of point-nucleons to compute
angular distributions of inclusive cross sections of 4.05 GeV electrons. We
report general agreement with data and interpret the remaining discrepancies.
We discuss the potential of the data for information on neutron structure

CP Violation in
We consider CP violating effects in the decays where both the resonance, , and
resonance, , can contribute. The interference
between the and resonances can lead to enhanced CP-violating
asymmetries whose magnitudes depend crucially on the decay
constant, . We make an estimate of with a
simplified chiral Lagrangian coupled to a massive pseudoscalar field, and we
compare the estimates from the non-relativistic quark model and from the QCD
sum rule with the estimate from the `mock' meson model. We then estimate
quantitatively the size of CP-violating effects in a multi-Higgs-doublet model
and scalar-leptoquark models. We find that, while CP-violating effects in the
scalar-leptoquark models may require more than leptons,
CP-violating effects from the multi-Higgs-doublet model can be seen at the
level with about leptons using the chiral Lagrangian

GRS computation of deep inelastic electron scattering on 4He
We compute cross sections for inclusive scattering of high energy electrons
on 4He, based on the two lowest orders of the Gersch-Rodriguez-Smith (GRS)
series. The required one- and two-particle density matrices are obtained from
non-relativistic 4He wave functions using realistic models for the
nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction. Predictions for E=3.6 GeV agree
well with the NE3 SLAC-Virginia data.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PR
Fermi Large Area Telescope Third Source Catalog

The 3FGL catalog is available at http://fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov/ssc/data/access/lat/4yr_catalogInternational audienceWe present the third Fermi Large Area Telescope source catalog (3FGL) of sources in the 100 MeV-300 GeV range. Based on the first four years of science data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission, it is the deepest yet in this energy range. Relative to the 2FGL catalog, the 3FGL catalog incorporates twice as much data as well as a number of analysis improvements, including improved calibrations at the event reconstruction level, an updated model for Galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission, a refined procedure for source detection, and improved methods for associating LAT sources with potential counterparts at other wavelengths. The 3FGL catalog includes 3033 sources above 4 sigma significance, with source location regions, spectral properties, and monthly light curves for each. Of these, 78 are flagged as potentially being due to imperfections in the model for Galactic diffuse emission. Twenty-five sources are modeled explicitly as spatially extended, and overall 232 sources are considered as identified based on angular extent or correlated variability (periodic or otherwise) observed at other wavelengths. For 1009 sources we have not found plausible counterparts at other wavelengths. More than 1100 of the identified or associated sources are active galaxies of the blazar class; several other classes of non-blazar active galaxies are also represented in the 3FGL. Pulsars represent the largest Galactic source class. From source counts of Galactic sources we estimate the contribution of unresolved sources to the Galactic diffuse emission is ~3% at 1 GeV
Neutron structure function and inclusive DIS from H-3 and He-3 at large Bjorken-x
A detailed study of inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from mirror A =
3 nuclei at large values of the Bjorken variable x is presented. The main
purpose is to estimate the theoretical uncertainties on the extraction of the
neutron DIS structure function from such nuclear measurements. On one hand,
within models in which no modification of the bound nucleon structure functions
is taken into account, we have investigated the possible uncertainties arising
from: i) charge symmetry breaking terms in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, ii)
finite Q**2 effects neglected in the Bjorken limit, iii) the role of different
prescriptions for the nucleon Spectral Function normalization providing baryon
number conservation, and iv) the differences between the virtual nucleon and
light cone formalisms. Although these effects have been not yet considered in
existing analyses, our conclusion is that all these effects cancel at the level
of ~ 1% for x < 0.75 in overall agreement with previous findings. On the other
hand we have considered several models in which the modification of the bound
nucleon structure functions is accounted for to describe the EMC effect in DIS
scattering from nuclei. It turns out that within these models the cancellation
of nuclear effects is expected to occur only at a level of ~ 3%, leading to an
accuracy of ~ 12 % in the extraction of the neutron to proton structure
function ratio at x ~ 0.7 -0.8$. Another consequence of considering a broad
range of models of the EMC effect is that the previously suggested iteration
procedure does not improve the accuracy of the extraction of the neutron to
proton structure function ratio.Comment: revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. C; main modifications in

The On-orbit Calibrations for the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on--board the Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope
began its on--orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a
generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization
of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and
responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA),
measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft
boresight alignments. Here we describe on orbit calibration results obtained
using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection
into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions
will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the
stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch.
These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly

Design and Initial Tests of the Tracker-Converter ofthe Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope
The Tracker subsystem of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) science instrument of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) mission has been completed and tested. It is the central detector subsystem of the LAT and serves both to convert an incident gamma-ray into an electron-positron pair and to track the pair in order to measure the gamma-ray direction. It also provides the principal trigger for the LAT. The Tracker uses silicon strip detectors, read out by custom electronics, to detect charged particles. The detectors and electronics are packaged, along with tungsten converter foils, in 16 modular, high-precision carbon-composite structures. It is the largest silicon-strip detector system ever built for launch into space, and its aggressive design emphasizes very low power consumption, passive cooling, low noise, high efficiency, minimal dead area, and a structure that is highly transparent to charged particles. The test program has demonstrated that the system meets or surpasses all of its performance specifications as well as environmental requirements. It is now installed in the completed LAT, which is being prepared for launch in early 2008
Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018
Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results demonstrate widespread moderate improvements in overall anemia prevalence but identify only three LMICs with a high probability of achieving the WHO GNT by 2030 at a national scale, and no LMIC is expected to achieve the target in all their subnational administrative units. Our maps show where large within-country disparities occur, as well as areas likely to fall short of the WHO GNT, offering precision public health tools so that adequate resource allocation and subsequent interventions can be targeted to the most vulnerable populations.Peer reviewe
