Transformation products of antibacterial drugs in environmental water: Identification approaches based on liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry
In recent years, the presence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment has caused increasing concern for the possible consequences on human health and ecosystems, including the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, once antibiotics enter the environment, mainly through hospital and municipal discharges and the effluents of wastewater treatment plants, they can be subject to transformation reactions, driven by both biotic (e.g. microorganism and mammalian metabolisms) and abiotic factors (e.g. oxidation, photodegradation, and hydrolysis). The resulting transformation products (TPs) can be less or more active than their parent compounds, therefore the inclusion of TPs in monitoring programs should be mandatory. However, only the reference standards of a few known TPs are available, whereas many other TPs are still unknown, due to the high diversity of possible transformation reactions in the environment. Modern high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) instrumentation is now ready to tackle this problem through suspect and untargeted screening approaches. However, for handling the large amount of data typically encountered in the analysis of environmental samples, these approaches also require suitable processing workflows and accurate tandem mass spectra interpretation. The compilation of a suspect list containing the possible monoisotopic masses of TPs retrieved from the literature and/or from laboratory simulated degradation experiments showed unique advantages. However, the employment of in silico prediction tools could improve the identification reliability. In this review, the most recent strategies relying on liquid chromatography-HRMS for the analysis of environmental TPs of the main antibiotic classes were examined, whereas TPs formed during water treatments or disinfection were not included
Investigating physicochemical, volatile and sensory parameters playing a positive or a negative role on tomato liking
This study aimed at providing further insights into the positive and negative drivers of tomato liking. For this purpose, 13 tomato cultivars representing different typologies were characterized for physicochemical parameters and aroma volatiles, and were assessed by a trained panel for sensory descriptors, and by Italian consumers for liking. The relationships among the different parameters and their effects on consumer liking were studied by Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. Among physicochemical traits and sensory descriptors, seeds, reducing sugars, firmness, thick epicarp, soluble solids, sour taste, total acidity, citrate, herbaceous aroma and brightness were found to be drivers of liking, whereas pulp thickness, humidity, fruit weight, diacetyl-like odor and mealiness showed an opposite influence. For the aroma volatiles, 2-isobutylthiazole played a key role on liking and its positive contribution seemed to be supported by (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, but suppressed by 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol, especially when tomatoes had a poor volatile fraction. Severity of asymptomatic carotid stenosis and risk of ipsilateral hemispheric ischaemic events: Results from the ACSRS study
Objectives. This study determines the risk of ipsilateral ischaemic neurological events in relation to the degree of asymptomatic carotid stenosis and other risk factors. Methods. Patients (n = 1115) with asymptomatic internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis greater than 50% in relation to the bulb diameter were followed up for a period of 6-84 (mean 37.1) months. Stenosis was graded using duplex, and clinical and biochemical risk factors were recorded. Results. The relationship between ICA stenosis and event rate is linear when stenosis is expressed by the ECST method, but S-shaped if expressed by the NASCET method. In addition to the ECST grade of stenosis (RR 1.6; 95% CI 1.21-2.15), history of contralateral TIAs (RR 3.0; 95% CI 1.90-4.73) and creatinine in excess of 85 Οmol/L (RR 2.1; 95% CI 1.23-3.65) were independent risk predictors. The combination of these three risk factors can identify a high-risk group (7.3% annual event rate and 4.3% annual stroke rate) and a low risk group (2.3% annual event rate and 0.7% annual stroke rate). Conclusions. Linearity between ECST percent stenosis and risk makes this method for grading stenosis more amenable to risk prediction without any transformation not only in clinical practice but also when multivariable analysis is to be used. Identification of additional risk factors provides a new approach to risk stratification and should help refine the indications for carotid endarterectomy. Š 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
The effect of seasoning with herbs on the nutritional, safety and sensory properties of reduced-sodium fermented Cobrançosa cv. table olives
This study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of seasoning Cobrancosa table olives in a brine with aromatic ingredients, in order to mask the bitter taste given by KCl when added to reduced-sodium fermentation brines. Olives were fermented in two different salt combinations: Brine A, containing 8% NaCl and, Brine B, a reduced-sodium brine, containing 4% NaCl + 4% KCl. After the fermentation the olives were immersed in seasoning brines with NaCl (2%) and the aromatic herbs (thyme, oregano and calamintha), garlic and lemon. At the end of the fermentation and two weeks after seasoning, the physicochemical, nutritional, organoleptic, and microbiological parameters, were determined. The olives fermented in the reduced-sodium brines had half the sodium concentration, higher potassium and calcium content, a lower caloric level, but were considered, by a sensorial panel, more bitter than olives fermented in NaCl brine. Seasoned table olives, previously fermented in Brine A and Brine B, had no significant differences in the amounts of protein (1.23% or 1.11%), carbohydrates (1.0% or 0.66%), fat (20.0% or 20.5%) and dietary fiber (3.4% or 3.6%). Regarding mineral contents, the sodium-reduced fermented olives, presented one third of sodium, seven times more potassium and three times more calcium than the traditional olives fermented in 8% NaCl. Additionally, according to the panelists' evaluation, seasoning the olives fermented in 4% NaCl + 4% KCl, resulted in a decrease in bitterness and an improvement in the overall evaluation and flavor. Performance and scalability of the back-end sub-system in the ATLAS DAQ/EF prototype
The DAQ group of the future ATLAS experiment has developed a prototype system based on the trigger/DAQ architecture described in the ATLAS Technical Proposal to support studies of the full system functionality, architecture as well as available hardware and software technologies. One sub-system of this prototype is the back- end which encompasses the software needed to configure, control and monitor the DAQ, but excludes the processing and transportation of physics data. The back-end consists of a number of components including run control, configuration databases and message reporting system. The software has been developed using standard, external software technologies such as OO databases and CORBA. It has been ported to several C++ compilers and operating systems including Solaris, Linux, WNT and LynxOS. This paper gives an overview of the back-end software, its performance, scalability and current status. (17 refs)
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H âÎł Îł, H â Z Zâ â4l and H âW Wâ âlνlν. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of âs = 7 TeV and âs = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fbâ1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined ďŹts probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson
Standalone vertex ďŹnding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer
A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at âs = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011
