This classroom action research is guided by the purpose of strengthening distance education in the EUS programs at the LUZ East Lake Coast Campus. The study combined complementary approaches such as ethnography and dialogic hermeneutics, guided by the transdiciplinarity of acting with and from the actors. As reflexive action strategies, it highlights training workshops, educational blogs, reflection circles for the deconstruction, reorientation, and programmatic and paradigmatic implementation of virtual classrooms. Using the critical, reflexive paradigm, the study is able to contrast how learning is facilitated in relation to third millennium challenges, a situation characterized by little training and commitment by some teachers in distance education coordination, a poor technology platform, obsolete program content and high failure levels, among others. The analysis was systematized using hermeneutic triangulation. Among its transformations, the following stand out: improvement in the technological and academic skills of the actors, implementation of five virtual classrooms, updating the technology platform, programmatic and paradigmatic updating of the units attached to EUS coordination at the LUZ East Lake Coast Campus, reorientation of evaluation criteria according to a formative concept, providing greater opportunities for student self-regulation, taking into account their learning pace and strengthening educational research networks that facilitate learning in all EUS units at the University of Zulia. &nbsp

Illegal cyanide fishing is one of the major threats to Indo-Pacific coral reefs, targeting a multitude of colorful species for the marine aquarium trade as well as large-sized groupers and wrasses for the food fish trade. Ultimately, the continued use of this destructive practice as oceans warm may overload tropical ecosystems and result in irreversible ecological damage. Here we show that the impact of cyanide poisoning in an ornamental tropical marine fish is magnified under increased temperatures. A sole pulse exposure of 60 s to 50 mg L–1 of cyanide under current temperature (26°C) caused substantial mortality (50–100%) in eight species of Pomacentridae. The clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris was the most resistant, especially medium-sized fish [average total length and weight of 38 mm and 1.12 g; LC50 (95% CI) = 50.00 (46.76 − 53.24) mg L–1] that showed shorter recovery times and higher survival rates (%) when compared to small-sized ones [average total length and weight of 25 mm and 0.30 g; LC50 (95% CI) = 28.45 (20.17 − 36.72) mg L–1]. However, when the most resistant size-class was concomitantly exposed to a sub-lethal dosage of cyanide (25 mg L–1 instead of 50 mg L–1) and ocean warming scenarios for 2100 (+3°C and heat wave +6°C), survival rates (%) decreased to 60 and 20%, respectively, and recovery times increased in the worst case scenario. Mortality outbreaks, as well as vulnerability to predation, will likely expand in fish inhabiting coral reefs exposed to cyanide fishing unless stronger conservation measures are taken in tropical reefs to limit this destructive practice now and in the oceans of tomorrow.publishersversionpublishe

Cranial tuberculosis is a rare entity, which starts with an infection of the spinal cord and spreads to the external and internal plates of the skull, causing destruction of the bone and the formation of granulation tissue causing a collection of purulent discharge, edema and pain in the affected area. Diagnosis requires the demonstration of acid-fast bacilli in the smear specimen by Ziehl-Neelsen staining and the presence of a histopathological caseous granuloma. Treatment may be medical or surgical depending on the complexity of the pathology. We report the case of a 45-year-old male patient, who presented with an open wound in the left parietal region, caused by a history of craniotomy due to cranioencephalic trauma 6 years ago. The culture of the lesion described was positive for acid-fast bacilli, and the patient received antituberculosis therapy with good clinical response. This is an unusual case that is reported for knowledge and to define diagnostic and therapeutic conducts before an atypical presentation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis

    Get PDF
Objective. To assess the association of dietary fiber on current everyday diet and other dietary components with glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), glucose, lipids profile, and body weight body weight, in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods. A cross-sectional survey of 395 patients with type 2 diabetes was performed. HbA1c, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and lipids profile were measured. Weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and body composition were measured. Everyday diet with a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was evaluated. ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression were used in statistical analysis. Results. Higher fiber intake was associated with a low HbA1c, high HDL-c levels, low weight, and waist circumference. The highest tertile of calories consumption was associated with a higher fasting glucose level and weight. The highest tertile of carbohydrate consumption was associated with a lower weight. The lowest tertile of total fat and saturated fat was associated with the highest tertile of HDL-c levels, and lower saturated fat intake was associated with lower weight ( < 0.05). Conclusions. A higher content of fiber in the diet reduces HbA1c and triglycerides, while improving HDL-c levels. Increasing fiber consumption while lowering calorie consumption seems to be an appropriate strategy to reduce body weight and promote blood glucose control

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V.Comment: SDSS-IV collaboration alphabetical author data release paper. DR14 happened on 31st July 2017. 19 pages, 5 figures. Accepted by ApJS on 28th Nov 2017 (this is the "post-print" and "post-proofs" version; minor corrections only from v1, and most of errors found in proofs corrected
