    Artroplastia Total do Joelho Dolorosa

    A Artroplastia Total do Joelho (ATJ) tem vindo a assumir-se como a opção cirúrgica mais frequente no tratamento de doentes com alterações degenerativas da articulação do joelho devido aos ótimos resultados funcionais e melhoria da dor. No entanto, a percentagem de doentes com sintomas dolorosos após a realização deste procedimento atinge em algumas estatísticas publicadas valores significativos que oscilam entre os 10 e os 20%. Em alguns casos a dor não é facilmente explicável, representando um desafio para o cirurgião. Os autores relatam o caso de uma doente de 71 anos submetida a ATJ primária, no contexto de patologia degenerativa idiopática associado a desvio axial em varum. A dor localizava-se na face anteroexterna do joelho ao nível da interlinha articular e tiveram início no pós-operatório de forma gradual, associadas ao aumento da mobilidade. Devido à presença de um sintoma associado a atividade mecânica, foram colocadas várias hipóteses, entre as quais a possibilidade de conflito com resquício intra-articulares do compartimento externo do joelho. A doente foi submetida a artroscopia da articulação do joelho que revelou a existência de um fragmento meniscal que provocava conflito entre o côndilo externo do componente artroplástico femoral e o polietileno no movimento de extensão máxima do joelho. Procedeu-se a remoção artroscópica do fragmento com melhoria sintomática completa. Os autores pretendem com este caso evidenciar a importância da investigação diagnóstica para o tratamento da dor inexplicável na ATJ, e o valor terapêutico da artroscopia nos casos de provável conflito

    Comparing extrapolations of the coronal magnetic field structure at 2.5 solar radii with multi-viewpoint coronagraphic observations

    The magnetic field shapes the structure of the solar corona but we still know little about the interrelationships between the coronal magnetic field configurations and the resulting quasi-stationary structures observed in coronagraphic images (as streamers, plumes, coronal holes). One way to obtain information on the large-scale structure of the coronal magnetic field is to extrapolate it from photospheric data and compare the results with coronagraphic images. Our aim is to verify if this comparison can be a fast method to check systematically the reliability of the many methods available to reconstruct the coronal magnetic field. Coronal fields are usually extrapolated from photospheric measurements typically in a region close to the central meridian on the solar disk and then compared with coronagraphic images at the limbs, acquired at least 7 days before or after to account for solar rotation, implicitly assuming that no significant changes occurred in the corona during that period. In this work, we combine images from three coronagraphs (SOHO/LASCO-C2 and the two STEREO/SECCHI-COR1) observing the Sun from different viewing angles to build Carrington maps covering the entire corona to reduce the effect of temporal evolution to ~ 5 days. We then compare the position of the observed streamers in these Carrington maps with that of the neutral lines obtained from four different magnetic field extrapolations, to evaluate the performances of the latter in the solar corona. Our results show that the location of coronal streamers can provide important indications to discriminate between different magnetic field extrapolations.Comment: Accepted by A&A the 20th of May, 201

    Institutional bilateral cooperation for lifelong learning in applied sciences: a multicultural experience integrated in a tempus program

    Life Long Learning in Applied Fields (LLAF) é um dos projetos aprovados pelo Programa TEMPUS IV e envolve 16 Instituições de 8 países, incluindo o Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, o ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa e a INOVA+. Os parceiros colaboram no sentido de dar resposta ao desafio proposto pelas Instituições de Ensino Superior israelitas para manterem a sua relevância no ensino, através da criação de condições para o desenvolvimento de curricula que possa proporcionar aos estudantes ferramentas e capacidades para novos desenvolvimentos profissionais e inovação, também numa perspetiva de extensão à comunidade. Com uma metodologia ativa, a operacionalização tem acontecido em reuniões periódicas dos parceiros e em trabalho de grupo, numa perspetiva de partilha de conhecimento e experiências, que produziu novos curricula e Educational Units (EDUs), adequados à realidade social e educativa de Israel, mas inovadores nas metodologias e estratégias. Neste momento, as Instituições selecionaram os EDUs ou módulos que lhes parecem ser aplicáveis na sua realidade e deu-se início à fase de pilotagem dos cursos. A disseminação é um dos pontos fundamentais deste processo, pela importância de partilhar resultados, dificuldades de operacionalização e estratégias utilizadas para as ultrapassar.     MIRRAGGE – Minimum Information Required for Reproducible AGGregation Experiments

    Reports on phase separation and amyloid formation for multiple proteins and aggregation-prone peptides are recurrently used to explore the molecular mechanisms associated with several human diseases. The information conveyed by these reports can be used directly in translational investigation, e.g., for the design of better drug screening strategies, or be compiled in databases for benchmarking novel aggregation-predicting algorithms. Given that minute protocol variations determine different outcomes of protein aggregation assays, there is a strong urge for standardized descriptions of the different types of aggregates and the detailed methods used in their production. In an attempt to address this need, we assembled the Minimum Information Required for Reproducible Aggregation Experiments (MIRRAGGE) guidelines, considering first-principles and the established literature on protein self-assembly and aggregation. This consensus information aims to cover the major and subtle determinants of experimental reproducibility while avoiding excessive technical details that are of limited practical interest for non-specialized users. The MIRRAGGE table (template available in Supplementary Information) is useful as a guide for the design of new studies and as a checklist during submission of experimental reports for publication.     Precision measurement of the neutrino velocity with the ICARUS detector in the CNGS beam

    During May 2012, the CERN-CNGS neutrino beam has been operated for two weeks for a total of 1.8 10^17 pot in bunched mode, with a 3 ns narrow width proton beam bunches, separated by 100 ns. This tightly bunched beam structure allows a very accurate time of flight measurement of neutrinos from CERN to LNGS on an event-by-event basis. Both the ICARUS-T600 PMT-DAQ and the CERN-LNGS timing synchronization have been substantially improved for this campaign, taking ad-vantage of additional independent GPS receivers, both at CERN and LNGS as well as of the deployment of the "White Rabbit" protocol both at CERN and LNGS. The ICARUS-T600 detector has collected 25 beam-associated events; the corresponding time of flight has been accurately evaluated, using all different time synchronization paths. The measured neutrino time of flight is compatible with the arrival of all events with speed equivalent to the one of light: the difference between the expected value based on the speed of light and the measured value is tof_c - tof_nu = (0.10 \pm 0.67stat. \pm 2.39syst.) ns. This result is in agreement with the value previously reported by the ICARUS collaboration, tof_c - tof_nu = (0.3 \pm 4.9stat. \pm 9.0syst.) ns, but with improved statistical and systematic errors.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 1 tabl

    Polyphenols journey through blood-brain barrier towards neuronal protection

    Age-related complications such as neurodegenerative disorders are increasing and remain cureless. The possibility of altering the progression or the development of these multifactorial diseases through diet is an emerging and attractive approach with increasing experimental support. We examined the potential of known bioavailable phenolic sulfates, arising from colonic metabolism of berries, to infuence hallmarks of neurodegenerative processes. In silico predictions and in vitro transport studies across blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelial cells, at circulating concentrations, provided evidence for diferential transport, likely related to chemical structure. Moreover, endothelial metabolism of these phenolic sulfates produced a plethora of novel chemical entities with further potential bioactivies. Pre-conditioning with phenolic sulfates improved cellular responses to oxidative, excitotoxicity and infammatory injuries and this attenuation of neuroinfammation was achieved via modulation of NF-κB pathway. Our results support the hypothesis that these small molecules, derived from dietary (poly)phenols may cross the BBB, reach brain cells, modulate microglia-mediated infammation and exert neuroprotective efects, with potential for alleviation of neurodegenerative diseases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Measurement of 73 Ge(n,γ) cross sections and implications for stellar nucleosynthesis

Published by Elsevier B.V.73 Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73 Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73 Ge in the solar system.Peer reviewe

    Measurement of the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section at the CERN n-TOF facility : First results from experimental area II (EAR-2)

    The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN's n-TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n-TOF's new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1).
