    Through a wide-ranging critical review of relevant publications, we explore and articulate what constitutes the sensemaking perspective in organization studies, as well as its range of applications and limitations. More specifically, we argue that sensemaking in organizations has been seen as consisting of specific episodes, is triggered by ambiguous events, occurs through specific processes, generates specific outcomes, and is influenced by several situational factors. Furthermore, we clarify the application range of the sensemaking perspective and identify, as well as account for, the types and aspects of organizational sensemaking that have been under-researched. We critically discuss the criticism that the sensemaking perspective has received so far and selectively expand on it. Finally, we identify the main limitations of the sensemaking perspective, which, if tackled, will advance it: the neglect of prospective sensemaking, the exclusive focus on disruptive episodes at the expense of more mundane forms of sensemaking implicated in routine activities, the ambiguous status of enactment, the conflation of first-order and second-order sensemaking, and the lack of proper attention to embodied sensemaking.     The contours and consequences of compassion at work

    This paper describes two studies that explore core questions about compassion at work. Findings from a pilot survey indicate that compassion occurs with relative frequency among a wide variety of individuals, suggesting a relationship between experienced compassion, positive emotion, and affective commitment. A complementary narrative study reveals a wide range of compassion triggers and illuminates ways that work colleagues respond to suffering. The narrative analysis demonstrates that experienced compassion provides important sensemaking occasions where employees who receive, witness, or participate in the delivery of compassion reshape understandings of their co-workers, themselves, and their organizations. Together these studies map the contours of compassion at work, provide evidence of its powerful consequences, and open a horizon of new research questions.     Stoichiometric and catalytic C-C and C-H bond formation with B(C6F5)3 via cationic intermediates

    This work showcases a new catalytic cyclization reaction using a highly Lewis acidic borane with concomitant C−H or C−C bond formation. The activation of alkyne‐containing substrates with B(C6F5)3 enabled the first catalytic intramolecular cyclizations of carboxylic acid substrates using this Lewis acid. In addition, intramolecular cyclizations of esters enable C−C bond formation as catalytic B(C6F5)3 can be used to effect formal 1,5‐alkyl migrations from the ester functional groups to unsaturated carbon–carbon frameworks. This metal‐free method was used for the catalytic formation of complex dihydropyrones and isocoumarins in very good yields under relatively mild conditions with excellent atom efficiency

    Fitting as a temporal sensemaking process: shifting trajectories and stable themes

    This study identifies several mechanisms and the overall process by which individuals understand their evolving fit with their work environment. Prior person-environment research has emphasized one-time quantitative assessments of fit, primarily as new entrants enter their work environment. In this study, we employed a qualitative approach to investigate the following question: how do long-tenured professionals make sense of fit over time? Three key findings emerged from the fit-related histories we collected. First, we discovered four prototypical fit trajectories, which were constructed from temporal comparisons with past, present, and future fit, and employed to make momentary sense of events occurring in the work environment. Second, we identified two fit processes that played out over time: a slow accumulation journey and a sudden identity-threat journey. Third, we found that individuals’ set of fit experiences was explained by one of four enduring fit themes, explaining their pattern of fit experiences over time and their reaction to misfit. Most surprising was the significant turnover among our long-tenured participants in the year or so following our interviews. Our findings break from traditional thinking about fit as predicting outcomes in the moment, to fitting as both a journey and a retrospective and prospective process of sensemaking.     Diese Arbeit beschreibt eine neuartige katalytische Cyclisierung unter Verwendung eines stark Lewis-sauren Borans mit einhergehender C-H- oder C-C-Bindungsbildung. Die Aktivierung von Molekülen mit C-C-Dreifachbindungen unter Verwendung von B(C6F5)3 ermöglicht erstmals eine entsprechende Lewis-Säure-katalysierte, intramolekulare Cyclisierung von Carbonsäuren. Darüber hinaus zeigen die Ester dieser Carbonsäuren mit katalytischen Mengen B(C6F5)3 eine formale 1,5-Migration der Estergruppen unter Knüpfung einer C-C-Bindung. Unter Verwendung dieser neuen metallfreien Methode konnten anspruchsvolle Dihydropyrone und Isocumarine in hohen Ausbeuten unter milden Bedingungen sowie mit hoher Atomökonomie synthetisiert werden

    Active Site Design in a Chemzyme: Development of a Highly Asymmetric and Remarkably Temperature-Independent Catalyst for the Imino Aldol Reaction**

    The asymmetric aldol reaction of an enolate or enolate equivalent with an imine is a reaction of established synthetic importance for the synthesis of chiral amines in general and bamino esters in particular. [1] The development of chiral catalysts for this reaction has proven to be a difficult task and had eluded all attempts until recently when Kobayashi and co-workers examined imines derived from o-aminophenol. [2±4] Their method involves the catalysis of the reactions of these imines and ketene acetals with a catalyst generated from zirconium(iv) tert-butoxide and two equivalents of (R)-6,6'-dibromoBINOL (BINOL 1,1'-binaphth-2-ol). Our interest in the synthesis of chiral amines led us to investigate the use of VAPOL-derived catalysts A comparison of catalysts prepared from BINOL, 6,6'-dibromoBINOL and VAPOL ligands on the asymmetric induction in the reaction of the phenyl-substituted imine 1 and acetal 2 is summarized in [2] The VAPOL catalyst could be prepared in either methylene chloride or toluene, but for solubility reasons, the BINOL catalysts were prepared in methylene chloride. The VAPOL and Br 2 BINOL catalysts were superior to the BINOL catalyst at À 45 8C. The asymmetric induction dropped for the Br 2 BINOL catalyst when the temperature was raised from À 45 8C to room temperature, but curiously, the asymmetric induction for the VAPOL catalyst was essentially unchanged over this same temperature range. Only a small drop-off is noted (85 % ee) when the temperature is raised to 41 8C and the substrate-to-catalyst ratio is raised to 200:1 (entry 5). Both the R enantiomers of BINOL and Br 2 BINOL ligands give the R enantiomer of the product 3, whereas with the VAPOL ligand, it is the S enantiomer that gives the R product. This reversal is not unexpected given the structures of the ligands where the zirconium is in the minor groove of the BINOL ligands and in the major groove of the VAPOL ligand. [2g] It is clear from the examination of space-filling CPK models that it is possible to bind two VAPOL ligands to one zirconium atom but only with a facial arrangement of the four oxygen atoms as is illustratred by structure 6 in Scheme 1. This is supported by 1 H NMR experiments on a catalyst generated from zirconium tetraisopropoxide and VAPOL in the presence of two equivalents of N-methyl imidiazole. A clean spectrum is only observed with two equivalents of VAPOL relative to zirconium and the spectrum is consistent with a single C 2 -symmetrical species were performed by using the TEXSAN [13] crystallographic software package.     Process theory and research: Exploring the dialectic tension

    We contest that although the notion of process is increasingly being applied to the study of organizations, these attempts are hampered by significant methodological shortcomings. We claim that the value of process theory is under-utilized because most attempts to apply process theory end up reverting to conventional non-process methods. We suggest that the cause of this reversion is primarily the challenge of making sense, of fixing the world, propelling us from process into the world of substance. To break free of these limitations we propose an approach that takes the researchers? audience alongside the subject processes rather than attempting to clinically intersect them. We illuminate this paper with our own story vignettes concerning the fortunes of an idea that passes by the name of value based management (VBM). 1 These vignettes are meant to both exemplify and disrupt the theoretical narrative
