Iterative pre-distortion of the non-linear satellite channel

Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite - Second Generation (DVB-S2) is the current European standard for satellite broadcast and broadband communications. It relies on high order modulations up to 32-amplitude/phase-shift-keying (APSK) in order to increase the system spectral efficiency. Unfortunately, as the modulation order increases, the receiver becomes more sensitive to physical layer impairments, and notably to the distortions induced by the power amplifier and the channelizing filters aboard the satellite. Pre-distortion of the non-linear satellite channel has been studied for many years. However, the performance of existing pre-distortion algorithms generally becomes poor when high-order modulations are used on a non-linear channel with a long memory. In this paper, we investigate a new iterative method that pre-distorts blocks of transmitted symbols so as to minimize the Euclidian distance between the transmitted and received symbols. We also propose approximations to relax the pre-distorter complexity while keeping its performance acceptable

Podcasting and intercultural imagination: othering and self-solidifying around tapas and siesta

In this paper I examine the type of discourse developed on Selves and Otherness in a Podcast dedicated to intercultural communication. Based on the first episode of the Podcast, I try to determine the podcasters’ approach to self and otherness in the program. The analysis reveals that the phenomena of Othering and Self-solidifying tend to emerge in the show.

Creating and combining models of Intercultural competence for teacher education/training : On the need to rethink IC frequently

In this chapter, the author argues that one of the conditioning elements, education, should help break such patterns and shake up the divide between the ‘oneness’ of nature and the tendency to construct interculturality as something problematic. He also contributes to questioning this problematic and widespread attitude. The Postmodern model has been taught in many different countries (China, Finland, France, Luxembourg, amongst others) over the past decade. It has been used in initial teacher education at the University of Helsinki (Finland). If introduced alongside, the Postmodern Model and Confucian Model can help those involved in teacher education/training reflect on interculturality theoretically, methodologically and ethically. The author presents two complementary models of Intercultural Competence, which offer some reflections on ‘new paths to discover’. Long-term engagement with them in initial and in-service teacher education could have an influence on (student) teachers.Peer reviewe

A Sense-Making Approach to Understanding Adolescents' Selection of Health Information Sources

The authors propose that information sources are best understood as constructed by individuals in an attempt to find answers to questions of immediate relevance. Contact profiles, or patterns of source use for particular information, determine what constitutes a source for an individual. The study explores how adolescents acquire and use health information. Data analyses based on a probability sample of 200 adolescents identified nine contact profiles and supported four study hypotheses. Contact profiles differ according to health topics and are related to message sending and seeking regarding human sexuality and birth control. Adolescents with peer-media, home-oriented or multi-source contact profiles about human sexuality and birth control were more likely than others to be the peer advisors on this topic, and those with peer-media and multi-source profiles the ones more likely to be the information seekers about it. Contact profiles are also related to adolescents' health decision making capacity. Adolescents with peer-media and multi-source profiles for human sexuality and birth control information and those with home- oriented profiles for alcohol and smoking information engaged in more health decision making steps than those with other profiles. Finally, contact profiles are also related to awareness and contact with new information sources. Adolescents with peer-oriented and multi-source profiles were more likely than others to be aware of and have contacted a new peer education program in the school.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68266/2/10.1177_109019818401100403.pd

Exploring The Role Of Racial Associations Within Life And Psychiatry: The Dissociation Of Explicit And Implicit

Objective: In the past decade there has been increased interest in understanding racial disparities throughout the world. In doing so, racial associations and biases have been found to be one potential etiology of these disparities. Particularly in the medical field, trainings and institutions often have providers rely on self-reported racial associations as a means to understanding their biases. However, there is little known on how explicit/self-reported associations relate to implicit associations and clinical behavior, specifically within mental healthcare. This study aims to understand the relationship between explicit/self-reported statements and psychiatric providers’ implicit racial associations. Methods: Psychiatric providers were asked to provide explicit/self-reported statements reflecting their views on racial associations regarding (1) compliance, (2) diagnosis, and (3) treatment. They were also asked to complete 3 race Implicit Association Tests (IATs) on the same outcomes. Demographic predictors of self-reported statements were examined. Linear regression models were used to estimate the association between explicit/self-reported associations and results of IATs, which served as indicators of implicit racial associations. Results: We analyzed data from 294 providers who completed IATs. Training level was the only demographic predictor of explicit/self-reported associations—Board-certified psychiatrists had stronger explicit/self-reported associations of Black patients with noncompliance, compared to medical students (βΔD= 0.03, P \u3c0.01) but not for the other assessed categories. Explicit/self-reported and implicit associations linking noncompliance with Black patients were significantly but weakly correlated (βΔD=0.11; P 0.01, R2=0.03). Otherwise, explicit/self-reported statements were NOT significantly correlated with implicit associations. Conclusions: Overall, these results suggest a dissociation between psychiatry providers’ explicit/self-reported vs. implicit racial associations. This may imply that racial associations and biases often operate outside conscious awareness. Future studies may benefit from including both implicit and explicit association assessments in order to better understand their relationship and how these (1) affect clinical behavior and (2) whether interventions can change both self-reported and implicit racial associations. This is vital to better understand conscious and unconscious processes within individuals, particularly psychiatrists, to reduce racial disparities within healthcare. It is also essential in our efforts to create a world with justice, liberty, and meaning for all
