Effects of Aspergillus niger (K8) on nutritive value of rice straw
The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of solid state fermentation for the improvement of the quality of rice straw as animal feed. Rice straw was fermented using Aspergillus niger (K8) with and without additional nitrogen source (urea). Cellulose, hemicelluloses, organic matter (OM), dry matter (DM), acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) contents of rice straw were determined before and after 10 days of fermentation. Fermentation has significant (P < 0.01) effect on NDF, but not ADF and ADL contents. Addition of urea as nitrogen source significantly reduced (P < 0.01) the NDF and hemicellulose contents of fermented rice straw. Cellulose content of the rice straw was not affected (P > 0.05), but crude protein (CP) increased significantly (P < 0.01) after fermentation. In vitro gas production technique was used to evaluate the effect of the biological treatment on activity of rumen microorganisms. Fermentation of rice straw using A. niger significantly reduced total gas production (P < 0.01), DM disappearance (P < 0.01) and acetate, propionate and total volatile fatty acids (VFA) production (P < 0.05). Results of the present study showed that solid state fermentation of rice straw using A. niger reduced lignocellulose content, but has negative effect on microbial activity in the rumen ecosystem, presumably due to antagonistic activity of A. niger, or other intermediate products from the fermentation, on the rumen microorganisms.Key words: Aspergillus niger, biomass, solid state fermentation, biological treatment, in vitro gas production
Efficiency of rice straw lignocelluloses degradability by Aspergillus terreus ATCC 74135 in solid state fermentation
The ability of Aspergillus terreus for the production of cellulolytic enzymes and reduction of lignocellulose contents of rice straw in solid state fermentation was investigated in this study. Results suggested that, 8 days fermentation was appropriate, with enzymes activities as follows: FPase = 410.76 U/gDM, CMCase = 351.96U/gDM, -glucosidase = 16.37 U/gDM, xylanase = 6166.01 U/gDM and amyloglucosidase = 425.04 U/gDM (with maximum 993.71 U/gDM on day 6). In addition, the solid state fermentation significantly (P < 0.01) reduced the concentrations of NDF, ADF, cellulose and hemicellulose in the rice straw by 19.96, 13.8, 16.32 and 32.87%, respectively. The high degradation of the hemicellulose was reflected by the high activity of xylanase enzyme, which hydrolyses xylan in hemicellulose to xylose. Higher reducing sugar and microbial cell mass productions were also obtained after 8 days fermentation. Present data showed that, A. terreus is capable of producing high quantity of cellulolytic enzymes for the reduction of lignocellulose contents of biomass in a shorter incubation time when compared with the previously reported for biological treatment of agricultural by-products using white rot fungi.Key words: Aspergillus terreus, biomass, biological treatment, enzyme activity, solid state fermentation

Evidence of a structural quantum critical point in (CaxSr1-x)3Rh4Sn13 from a lattice dynamics study
Approaching a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective route to
stabilize superconductivity. While the role of magnetic QCPs has been
extensively discussed, similar exploration of a structural QCP is scarce due to
the lack of suitable systems with a continuous structural transition that can
be conveniently tuned to 0~K. Using inelastic X-ray scattering, we examine the
phonon spectrum of the nonmagnetic quasi-skutterudite
(CaSr)RhSn, which represents a precious system to
explore the interplay between structural instabilities and superconductivity by
tuning the Ca concentration . We unambiguously detect the softening of
phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition.
Intriguingly, at , the soft mode energy squared at the M point
extrapolates to zero at ~K, providing the first compelling
microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in
(CaSr)RhSn. The enhanced phonon density-of-states
at low energy provides the essential ingredient for realizing strong-coupling
superconductivity near the structural QCP
Appointment waiting times and education level influence the quality of bowel preparation in adult patients undergoing colonoscopy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Risk factors for poor bowel preparation are recognized to be independent of the type of bowel preparation method used. Patient and administrative factors influencing bowel preparation are known to vary in different healthcare systems.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective, cross-sectional study of patients undergoing colonoscopy in an Asian tertiary centre was conducted to identify risk factors associated with poor bowel preparation, and to evaluate the impact of poor bowel preparation on technical performance and patient comfort.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data on 501 patients (mean age 60.1 ± 14.0 years old, 51.2% males, 60.9% with secondary education or higher) was available for analysis. Poor bowel preparation was present in 151 patients (30.1%). Lower education level (OR = 2.35, 95% CI = 1.54 - 3.60), colonoscopy appointment waiting time beyond 16 weeks (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.04 - 3.37) and non-adherence to bowel preparation instructions (OR = 4.76, 95% CI = 3.00 - 7.55) were identified as independent risk factors for poor bowel preparation. Poor bowel preparation was associated with a lower cecal intubation rate (78.1% versus 98.3%, p < 0.001), prolonged total colonoscopy time (25.4 ± 12.6 minutes versus 16.7 ± 10.2 minutes, p < 0.001), and increased patient discomfort during colonoscopy (patient with moderate to severe abdominal discomfort 31.8% versus 3.2%, p < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Education levels and appointment waiting times, in addition to non-adherence to bowel preparation instructions, increase the risk of poor bowel preparation in adult patients undergoing colonoscopy. The latter has a significant impact on colonoscopy performance and patient comfort.</p
Targeting vaccinations for the licensed dengue vaccine: considerations for serosurvey design
Background The CYD-TDV vaccine was unusual in that the recommended target population for vaccination was originally defined not only by age, but also by transmission setting as defined by seroprevalence. WHO originally recommended countries consider vaccination against dengue with CYD-TDV vaccine in geographic settings only where prior infection with any dengue serotype, as measured by seroprevalence, was >170% in the target age group. Vaccine was not recommended in settings where seroprevalence was <50%. Test-and-vaccinate strategies suggested following new analysis by Sanofi will still require age-stratified seroprevalence surveys to optimise age-group targeting. Here we address considerations for serosurvey design in the context of vaccination program planning. Methods To explore how the design of seroprevalence surveys affects estimates of transmission intensity, 100 age-specific seroprevalence surveys were simulated using a beta-binomial distribution and a simple catalytic model for different combinations of age-range, survey size, transmission setting, and test sensitivity/specificity. We then used a Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain Monte-Carlo algorithm to estimate the force of infection from each simulated dataset. Results Sampling from a wide age-range led to more accurate estimates than merely increasing sample size in a narrow age-range. This finding was consistent across all transmission settings. The optimum test sensitivity and specificity given an imperfect test differed by setting with high sensitivity being important in high transmission settings and high specificity important in low transmission settings. Conclusions When assessing vaccination suitability by seroprevalence surveys, countries should ensure an appropriate age-range is sampled, considering epidemiological evidence about the local burden of disease
Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS
has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions
at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection
criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined.
For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a
muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the
whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4,
while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The
efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than
90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall
momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The
transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity
for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be
better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions

X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources
We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the
bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival
Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit
of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30
kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler
et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS
observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for
both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the
GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for
elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected
X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at
fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a
faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent
findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other
hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field
LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101
sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be
interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows
the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic
AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray
surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high
in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is

Azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles at high transverse momenta in PbPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV
The azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in PbPb collisions at
nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV is measured with the CMS
detector at the LHC over an extended transverse momentum (pt) range up to
approximately 60 GeV. The data cover both the low-pt region associated with
hydrodynamic flow phenomena and the high-pt region where the anisotropies may
reflect the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in the created medium.
The anisotropy parameter (v2) of the particles is extracted by correlating
charged tracks with respect to the event-plane reconstructed by using the
energy deposited in forward-angle calorimeters. For the six bins of collision
centrality studied, spanning the range of 0-60% most-central events, the
observed v2 values are found to first increase with pt, reaching a maximum
around pt = 3 GeV, and then to gradually decrease to almost zero, with the
decline persisting up to at least pt = 40 GeV over the full centrality range

Search for new physics with same-sign isolated dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy
A search for new physics is performed in events with two same-sign isolated
leptons, hadronic jets, and missing transverse energy in the final state. The
analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of
4.98 inverse femtobarns produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of
7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This constitutes a factor of
140 increase in integrated luminosity over previously published results. The
observed yields agree with the standard model predictions and thus no evidence
for new physics is found. The observations are used to set upper limits on
possible new physics contributions and to constrain supersymmetric models. To
facilitate the interpretation of the data in a broader range of new physics
scenarios, information on the event selection, detector response, and
