Search for sterile neutrino mixing in the MINOS long-baseline experiment
A search for depletion of the combined flux of active neutrino species over a 735 km baseline is reported using neutral-current interaction data recorded by the MINOS detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. Such a depletion is not expected according to conventional interpretations of neutrino oscillation data involving the three known neutrino flavors. A depletion would be a signature of oscillations or decay to postulated noninteracting sterile neutrinos, scenarios not ruled out by existing data. From an exposure of 3.18Ă1020 protons on target in which neutrinos of energies between ~500¿¿MeV and 120 GeV are produced predominantly as ¿¾, the visible energy spectrum of candidate neutral-current reactions in the MINOS far detector is reconstructed. Comparison of this spectrum to that inferred from a similarly selected near-detector sample shows that of the portion of the ¿¾ flux observed to disappear in charged-current interaction data, the fraction that could be converting to a sterile state is less than 52% at 90% confidence level (C.L.). The hypothesis that active neutrinos mix with a single sterile neutrino via oscillations is tested by fitting the data to various models. In the particular four-neutrino models considered, the mixing angles Âż24 and Âż34 are constrained to be less than 11° and 56° at 90% C.L., respectively. The possibility that active neutrinos may decay to sterile neutrinos is also investigated. Pure neutrino decay without oscillations is ruled out at 5.4 standard deviations. For the scenario in which active neutrinos decay into sterile states concurrently with neutrino oscillations, a lower limit is established for the neutrino decay lifetime t3/m3>2.1Ă10-12¿¿s/eV at 90% C.L
First observations of separated atmospheric nu_mu and bar{nu-mu} events in the MINOS detector
The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first MINOS observations of nuÂľ and [overline nu ]Âľ charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward- to downward-going events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations, giving Rup/downdata/Rup/downMC=0.62-0.14+0.19(stat.)Âą0.02(sys.). An extended maximum likelihood analysis of the observed L/E distributions excludes the null hypothesis of no neutrino oscillations at the 98% confidence level. Using the curvature of the observed muons in the 1.3 T MINOS magnetic field nuÂľ and [overline nu ]Âľ interactions are separated. The ratio of [overline nu ]Âľ to nuÂľ events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation assuming neutrinos and antineutrinos oscillate in the same manner, giving R[overline nu ][sub mu]/nu[sub mu]data/R[overline nu ][sub mu]/nu[sub mu]MC=0.96-0.27+0.38(stat.)Âą0.15(sys.), where the errors are the statistical and systematic uncertainties. Although the statistics are limited, this is the first direct observation of atmospheric neutrino interactions separately for nuÂľ and [overline nu ]Âľ
Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns
X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources
We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the
bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival
Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit
of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30
kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler
et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS
observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for
both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the
GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for
elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected
X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at
fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a
faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent
findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other
hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field
LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101
sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be
interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows
the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic
AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray
surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high
in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is
present in the halo of Sombrero.Comment: 11 figures, 5 tables, ApJ in pres
Measurements of atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos in the MINOS far detector
This paper reports measurements of atmospheric neutrino and antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Far Detector, based on 2553 live-days (37.9 kton-years) of data. A total of 2072 candidate events are observed. These are separated into 905 contained-vertex muons and 466 neutrino-induced rock-muons, both produced by charged-current v_Âľ and vÂŻ_Âľ interactions, and 701 contained-vertex showers, composed mainly of charged-current v_e and vÂŻ_e interactions and neutral-current interactions. The curvature of muon tracks in the magnetic field of the MINOS Far Detector is used to select separate samples of v_Âľ and vÂŻ_Âľ events. The observed ration of vÂŻ_Âľ to v_Âľ events is compared with the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, giving a double ration of (R^(data)_(vÂŻ/v))/(R^(MC)_(vÂŻ/v)) = 1.03 Âą 0.08(stat) Âą 0.08(syst). The v_Âľ and vÂŻ_Âľ data are separated into bins of L/E resolution, based on the reconstructed energy and direction of each event, and a maximum likelihood fit to the observed L/E distributions is used to determine the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters. This fit returns 90% confidence limits of |Îm^2| = (1.9 Âą 0.4) x 10^(-3) eV^2 and sin^(2)2θ > 0.86. The fit is extended to incorporate separate v_Âľ and vÂŻ_Âľ oscillation parameters, returning 90% confidence limits of |Îm^2|-|ÎmÂŻ^2| = 0.6^(2.4)_(-0.8) x 10^(-3) eV^2 on the difference between the squared-mass splittings for neutrinos and antineutrinos
Search for flavor-changing nonstandard neutrino interactions using nu(e) appearance in MINOS
We report new constraints on flavor-changing nonstandard neutrino interactions from the MINOS long-baseline experiment using νe and ¯νe appearance candidate events from predominantly νΟ and ¯νΟ beams. We used a statistical selection algorithm to separate νe candidates from background events, enabling an analysis of the combined MINOS neutrino and antineutrino data. We observe no deviations from standard neutrino mixing, and thus place constraints on the nonstandard interaction matter effect, |ĎľeĎ|, and phase, (δCP+δeĎ), using a 30-bin likelihood fit
Measurement of the multiple-muon charge ratio in the MINOS Far Detector
The charge ratio, RÎź=NÎź+/NÎźâ, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an underground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be RÎź=1.104Âą0.006(stat)+0.009â0.010(syst). This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic-ray interactions at TeV energies
Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations Using Beam and Atmospheric Data in MINOS
We report measurements of oscillation parameters from νΟ and νĚ
Îź disappearance using beam and atmospheric data from MINOS. The data comprise exposures of 10.71Ă1020 protons on target in the νΟ-dominated beam, 3.36Ă1020 protons on target in the νĚ
Îź-enhanced beam, and 37.88 kton yr of atmospheric neutrinos. Assuming identical ν and νĚ
oscillation parameters, we measure |Îm2|=(2.41-0.10+0.09)Ă10-3ââeV2 and sinâĄ2(2θ)=0.950-0.036+0.035. Allowing independent ν and νĚ
oscillations, we measure antineutrino parameters of |ÎmĚ
2|=(2.50-0.25+0.23)Ă10-3ââeV2 and sinâĄ2(2θĚ
)=0.97-0.08+0.03, with minimal change to the neutrino parameters
Precision measurement of the speed of propagation of neutrinos using the MINOS detectors
We report a two-detector measurement of the propagation speed of neutrinos over a baseline of 734 km. The measurement was made with the NuMI beam at Fermilab between the near and far MINOS detectors. The fractional difference between the neutrino speed and the speed of light is determined to be (v/câ1)=(1.0Âą1.1)Ă10â6, consistent with relativistic neutrinos
