    Unsupervised Learning of Style-sensitive Word Vectors

    This paper presents the first study aimed at capturing stylistic similarity between words in an unsupervised manner. We propose extending the continuous bag of words (CBOW) model (Mikolov et al., 2013) to learn style-sensitive word vectors using a wider context window under the assumption that the style of all the words in an utterance is consistent. In addition, we introduce a novel task to predict lexical stylistic similarity and to create a benchmark dataset for this task.     Contribution of K+ Channels to Coronary Dysfunction in Metabolic Syndrome

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Coronary microvascular function is markedly impaired by the onset of the metabolic syndrome and may be an important contributor to the increased cardiovascular events associated with this mutlifactorial disorder. Despite increasing appreciation for the role of coronary K+ channels in regulation of coronary microvascular function, the contribution of K+ channels to the deleterious influence of metabolic syndrome has not been determined. Accordingly, the overall goal of this investigation was to delineate the mechanistic contribution of K+ channels to coronary microvascular dysfunction in metabolic syndrome. Experiments were performed on Ossabaw miniature swine fed a normal maintenance diet or an excess calorie atherogenic diet that induces the classical clinical features of metabolic syndrome including obesity, insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, hyperleptinemia, and atherosclerosis. Experiments involved in vivo studies of coronary blood flow in open-chest anesthetized swine as well as conscious, chronically instrumented swine and in vitro studies in isolated coronary arteries, arterioles, and vascular smooth muscle cells. We found that coronary microvascular dysfunction in the metabolic syndrome significantly impairs coronary vasodilation in response to metabolic as well as ischemic stimuli. This impairment was directly related to decreased membrane trafficking and functional expression of BKCa channels in vascular smooth muscle cells that was accompanied by augmented L-type Ca2+ channel activity and increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration. In addition, we discovered that impairment of coronary vasodilation in the metabolic syndrome is mediated by reductions in the functional contribution of voltage-dependent K+ channels to the dilator response. Taken together, findings from this investigation demonstrate that the metabolic syndrome markedly attenuates coronary microvascular function via the diminished contribution of K+ channels to the overall control of coronary blood flow. Our data implicate impaired functional expression of coronary K+ channels as a critical mechanism underlying the increased incidence of cardiac arrhythmias, infarction and sudden cardiac death in obese patients with the metabolic syndrome

Although meiofauna can be abundant at such vents, the small size of meiofauna limits studies on nutritional sources. Here we investigated dietary sources of meio- and macrofauna at hydrothermal vent fields in the western North Pacific using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) and natural-abundance radiocarbon (Δ14C). Bacterial mats and Paralvinella spp. (polychaetes) collected from hydrothermal vent chimneys were enriched in 13C (up to -10‰) and depleted in 14C (-700 to -580‰). The δ13C and Δ14C values of dirivultid copepods, endemic to hydrothermal vent chimneys, were -11‰ and -661‰, respectively, and were similar to the values in the bacterial mats and Paralvinella spp. but distinct from those of nearby non-vent sediments (δ13C: ~-24‰) and water-column plankton (Δ14C: ~40‰). In contrast, δ13C values of nematodes from vent chimneys were similar to those of non-vent sites (ca. -25‰). Results suggest that dirivultids relied on vent chimney bacterial mats as their nutritional source, whereas vent nematodes did not obtain significant nutrient amounts from the chemolithoautotrophic microbes. The Δ14C values of Neoverruca intermedia (vent barnacle) suggest they gain nutrition from chemoautotrophic microbes, but the source of inorganic carbon was diluted with bottom water much more than those of the Paralvinella habitat, reflecting Neoverruca’s more distant distribution from active venting. Para se promoverem muitas marcas se utilizam de celebridades em seus anúncios. O objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender o impacto do endosso de celebridades nas atitudes das mulheres em relação às marcas de luxo acessível e na intenção de compra. Como método a pesquisa realizou-se um experimento manipulando a variável ajuste. Os resultados mostraram que o impacto do endosso de celebridades e o ajuste que estas possuem com as marcas estudadas, de fato influenciam a intenção de compra e as atitudes das mulheres. As respostas em relação a atitude e intenção de compra são mais positivas quando as respondentes estão expostas a uma celebridade de bom ajuste das marcas do que quando estão expostas a celebridades de ajuste ruim

    Boron nitride substrates for high-quality graphene electronics

    Graphene devices on standard SiO2 substrates are highly disordered, exhibiting characteristics far inferior to the expected intrinsic properties of graphene[1-12]. While suspending graphene above the substrate yields substantial improvement in device quality[13,14], this geometry imposes severe limitations on device architecture and functionality. Realization of suspended-like sample quality in a substrate supported geometry is essential to the future progress of graphene technology. In this Letter, we report the fabrication and characterization of high quality exfoliated mono- and bilayer graphene (MLG and BLG) devices on single crystal hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrates, by a mechanical transfer process. Variable-temperature magnetotransport measurements demonstrate that graphene devices on h-BN exhibit enhanced mobility, reduced carrier inhomogeneity, and reduced intrinsic doping in comparison with SiO2-supported devices. The ability to assemble crystalline layered materials in a controlled way sets the stage for new advancements in graphene electronics and enables realization of more complex graphene heterostructres.Comment: 20 pages (includes supplementary info), 7 figure

    OryzaExpress: An Integrated Database of Gene Expression Networks and Omics Annotations in Rice

    Similarity of gene expression profiles provides important clues for understanding the biological functions of genes, biological processes and metabolic pathways related to genes. A gene expression network (GEN) is an ideal choice to grasp such expression profile similarities among genes simultaneously. For GEN construction, the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) has been widely used as an index to evaluate the similarities of expression profiles for gene pairs. However, calculation of PCCs for all gene pairs requires large amounts of both time and computer resources. Based on correspondence analysis, we developed a new method for GEN construction, which takes minimal time even for large-scale expression data with general computational circumstances. Moreover, our method requires no prior parameters to remove sample redundancies in the data set. Using the new method, we constructed rice GENs from large-scale microarray data stored in a public database. We then collected and integrated various principal rice omics annotations in public and distinct databases. The integrated information contains annotations of genome, transcriptome and metabolic pathways. We thus developed the integrated database OryzaExpress for browsing GENs with an interactive and graphical viewer and principal omics annotations (http://riceball.lab.nig.ac.jp/oryzaexpress/). With integration of Arabidopsis GEN data from ATTED-II, OryzaExpress also allows us to compare GENs between rice and Arabidopsis. Thus, OryzaExpress is a comprehensive rice database that exploits powerful omics approaches from all perspectives in plant science and leads to systems biology

    Factor analysis for construct validity of a trunk impairment scale in Parkinson’s disease: a cross-sectional study

    ObjectivesTo investigate the construct validity of the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), which was developed to assess trunk impairment in patients with stroke, in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).DesignThis retrospective, cross-sectional study enrolled consecutive PD inpatients. Correlation analysis was performed to clarify whether the TIS assessment was related to other balance functions, lower extremity muscle strength, or walking ability. Factor analysis was performed to see how the background factors of TIS differ from balance function, lower limb muscle strength, and walking ability.ResultsExamining the data of 471 patients with PD, there were relationships between TIS and the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (r = 0.67), Barthel Index (r = 0.57), general lower limb extension torque (r = 0.51), two-minute walk test (r = 0.54), Hoehn and Yahr stage (r = −0.61), and Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III total points (r = −0.59). Factor analysis showed that TIS items were divided into three factors (an abdominal muscles and righting reflex component; a perception and verticality component; and a rotational component), differing from other scales that included clinical assessment items.ConclusionThe TIS can be useful for assessing the underlying trunk impairment as a basis for activities of daily living, gait function, and balance ability in patients with PD

    Lymphotoxin β receptor signaling promotes tertiary lymphoid organogenesis in the aorta adventitia of aged ApoE−/− mice

    Atherosclerosis involves a macrophage-rich inflammation in the aortic intima. It is increasingly recognized that this intimal inflammation is paralleled over time by a distinct inflammatory reaction in adjacent adventitia. Though cross talk between the coordinated inflammatory foci in the intima and the adventitia seems implicit, the mechanism(s) underlying their communication is unclear. Here, using detailed imaging analysis, microarray analyses, laser-capture microdissection, adoptive lymphocyte transfers, and functional blocking studies, we undertook to identify this mechanism. We show that in aged apoE−/− mice, medial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) beneath intimal plaques in abdominal aortae become activated through lymphotoxin β receptor (LTβR) to express the lymphorganogenic chemokines CXCL13 and CCL21. These signals in turn trigger the development of elaborate bona fide adventitial aortic tertiary lymphoid organs (ATLOs) containing functional conduit meshworks, germinal centers within B cell follicles, clusters of plasma cells, high endothelial venules (HEVs) in T cell areas, and a high proportion of T regulatory cells. Treatment of apoE−/− mice with LTβR-Ig to interrupt LTβR signaling in SMCs strongly reduced HEV abundance, CXCL13, and CCL21 expression, and disrupted the structure and maintenance of ATLOs. Thus, the LTβR pathway has a major role in shaping the immunological characteristics and overall integrity of the arterial wall
