Interband cascade lasers with room temperature threshold current densities below 100 A/cm(2)

Interband Cascade Lasers (ICLs) with threshold current densities below 100 A/cm(2) in pulsed operation at room temperature are presented. The laser structure comprises 10 active stages of 41 nm length, each stage containing a W-quantum well active region for emission in the spectral region around 3.6 mu m. A comparison of devices with 6 and 10 stages shows that the latter have a reduced threshold due to an increased optical confinement factor, very competitive threshold power densities of 428 W cm(-2) despite an increased threshold voltage and large differential slope efficiencies of 1390 mW/A. Comparing Methods for Interpolation to Improve Raster Digital Elevation Models

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are available as raster files at 100m, 30m, and 10m resolutions for the contiguous United States and are used in a variety of geographic analyses. Some projects may require a finer resolution. GIS software offers many options for interpolating data to higher resolutions. We compared ten interpolation methods using 10m sample data from the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas. We interpolated the 10m DEM to 5m, 2.5m, and 1m resolutions and compared the absolute mean difference (AMD) for each using surveyed control points. Overall, there was little difference in the accuracy between interpolation methods at the resolutions tested and minimal departure from the original 10m raster

This article describes a research study exploring the question: What influence will reading and discussing traditional literature have upon students\u27 narrative writing? The setting for the study was a fifth grade classroom that was part of a university laboratory school. Students listened to and discussed Native American folktales and then wrote their own, self-created narrative.
